1980 Triumph TR7 - Part 1 - Taking seats apart

The TR7 we are working on smells really bad because it was filled with water while being stored in a leaky garage. We are replacing the carpet, but the seats seem to be in a good shape (apart from the smell) and we'd like to save them.

Did this a few years ago. My seats were a mess so I just tore them apart. One thing I did do was add extra foam in the lumbar area. Looks nice and makes the seats more comfortable. I didn’t do it regrettably, but I wish I put a little more padding where the headrest posts are in the seat.

What a lot of work to redo those seats, but I know that you are never shy when it comes to making efforts. Looking forward to seeing them come together.

Good to see you working your magic again Elin. Just to say those seat frame clips, tube clamps and fittings are typical of the British Leyland cars of the day and are all still available. My Mini seats are pretty much the same. I took them apart and put the velour covers in the washing machine - came out perfect! And even I managed to refit them so they look good as new. As for headrests they are identical to the later ('90s on)Minis so foam, covers etc are available. I would replace the wood infill at the base of the metal frame for the staples and plastic cover screws. Not a clever design but it works. I am lucky as I am about 10 miles from Newton Commercials who do all the old traditional carpets, covers, foams and fittings etc for older cars.

I would say toss everything but the frame however the heartbreak with these is not the cover price but the seat foam and straps, they double the price of the seat restoration cost.

Hey Elin good to see you back on! Perhaps it’s just me but I’ve made the mistake of trying to resurrect old foam. That stuff is at the end of its life. From a comfort and long term cost perspective, ditch the old foam and install denser new foam bought ($$$) or cut from a block ($$).
