Well, in the last moth I read so much about the OD that I've done it more that 100 times in my head already :)

Elin, the videos of the overdrive overhaul have been to a great help. Now I am looking for videos of overhauling the Moss gearboxes GBNxxxJS. Do you have anything in this direction or do you know where I can find some? Regards and good luck Charles

I am not sure which transmission that is. I have TR6/4 trans rebuild and a GT6/spitfire videos

Hey Elin, really good job. I did notice that your Solenoid actuation is housed in the casting, sealed with a lid, whereas mine is totally open to the elements, no casting or lid, would you know if that makes mine a later or older OD unit?
@RustyBeauties7 жыл бұрын
I have no idea :) This overdrive has a little bit weird look to it. I've never seen another one like it. The housing is different and there is an opening above the speedo pinion, which I had to plug... The other overdrive I am rebuilding is the same as yours. Even though the plate for the solenoid was broken when we got it I could tell it wasn't a closed one. When I was ordering the new one I checked if I could buy a closed one, but nobody offers it. So I got the open one too.

Elin, How do you keep the actuator rod from leaking on the right side of the overdrive?

Owners manual says 90 gear oil. My O/D transmission still has original oil after 42 years. I'm thinking I should change it but after watching you overhaul an O/D I'm worried about creating a problem. Why 30W and not 90?
@RustyBeauties7 жыл бұрын
Some people say the 90 increases the pressure too fast and creates a shock, others say that is BS. I just answered the same question in another post so I will just copy my answer from there: Yeah, I've heard about regular motor oil too, but to be honest, I've heard many other opinions too - ATF, 90 weight, because that's what the manual asks for.... And everybody sounded very convincing... There is this article www.britsportofseattle.com/2010/06/laycock-overdrive-unitswhat-oil/ which talks about that too. Not a final conclusion though, or at least very open conclusion, so I guess one has to decide which opinion to go with and in any case they wont be very wrong. One thing is for sure - do not use GL-5 because it will ruin the brass inside. And about the manual - well it was written 40-45 years ago. The technology made so much progress since then, that I am sure there are much better options than the W90 oil now. I still think I will go with the W30 because I've seen a car which has been driven with this oil for the last 10 years and it is still issue free and it is a great runner.

Thanks for the reply. I have to say, now I'm really unsure what, if anything, to do. My 75 TR6 O/D has the original factory oil in both transmission and rear diff. I've owned it for 30 years and never had a problem except once about 10 years ago the O/D quit working. The solution was to top up the transmission with 90 (or 80/90 not sure what it was). That fixed it and it's been fine since. So rather than take a chance, I'm going to leave it alone other than add more gear oil if it quits in the future. I just hate to think what that 42 year old oil must look like :) ps- the link you included in your last reply did not work for me. Thanks again, Dave
