I am all about high end sports cars, and big trucks and blahblahblah, but if I had the money, I would for sure buy one, like without any questions. It's such a practical little car for a daily driver. It's about the same cost as a motorcycle, and is infinitely more safe, as well as being able to be driven year round in comfort. I really hope these things take off.
@andrewmccarthy41449 жыл бұрын

+MrMatte0000 i could not be more enhusiastic about driving mine, they have had my deposite for two years now. i do drive a motorcycle and this is in no way a motorcycle to my thinking. that said i am more than sure this will be a daily driver. it is no more or less safe than any other car on the road from my perspective. its just like having two driver sides...... so whats the diff? weight means gas so light is a good thing. incidentaly i sat in one and met paul elio in the NYC autoshow back in april. i think it was, and it has more room then my 2011 toyota Venza. they are saying last quarter of the year i can expect delivery but i cant find anything on where i would be picking it up from as of yet. my resevation is in the low 9k. so i will be in the 1st 25% of owners for the first year release. super excited.
@anthonyantoine92329 жыл бұрын
+MrMatte0000 If you're considering this over a motorcycle, then you don't *really* want a motorcycle. I really love cars and I really love bikes. The beauty of riding a motorcycle is being absolutely attached to the machine and feeling very involved. It's about being in the open environment. It's almost freeing in a way. Another beauty of motorcycles is how small they are. You can go pretty much anywhere on one, because it's about as wide as your shoulders. This thing lacks all of those things, which are all big reasons to love riding. Not only that, but the feeling of railing a turn on a bike leaned over 45+ degrees is one of the most thrilling things one can do for so cheap.
@Rebel96688 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Antoine I really don't want a motorcycle, but I'd buy this. I've had motorcycles in the past and I've seen lots of friends killed or maimed in my lifetime too, but to have something that gets that good of gas mileage that I could run errands in would be awesome. Not like it;s a choice between it or my truck. I'd keep my truck for big jobs and have this thing just for little things and the fun of just cruising the backroads. Besides, people buy 4 wheelers and those things that look like miniature plastic pickup trucks, so why not?

I think it is advisable to put marker lights on both front fenders. Pedestrians and other vehicles will mistakenly assume the safe distance is measured by the body of the vehicle and not the fenders.
@jakegarrett81098 жыл бұрын
The front fenders move, so it would be like mounting lights almost on your wheels. That would make the light rarely point where you want it and small zig zagging would become disorienting. If you meant above, or in front, like with arms bolted securely to the body, just to move it farther out, then yeah, that would probably be way better. I can totally see someone get to close and get there legs clipped (probably doing an impressive flip), and getting badly injured from not expecting the wheels.
@ImpenetrableBread8 жыл бұрын
Lights, or reflectors at least! That way it might not be as disorienting as having actually lights on the fenders
@jakegarrett81098 жыл бұрын
ImpenetrableBread That's a good idea. I'm not sure about regulations though. It seems that if its a good safe idea, it gets banned for no apparent reason. I do know we use yellow side reflectors on our smaller trucks (in addition to the normal side lights). The alternative is to install some aftermarket lighting (like wheel accent lighting, or some other way to give the profile a glow without distracting or blinding drivers). Reflectors are a great idea, it would cost almost nothing, nothing to really break down, no lights going out, etc.

@Dhomazhir9 жыл бұрын
+Paul Russell The Elio will have better Power to weight than my old Mazda b2000 and my old Nissan Hardbody. And as you know with bikes, it's one thing to be able to make speed, another to be able to do something with it. Yeah, I pedal drag alot some days with my Vulcan. So used to the maneuverability of cars.
@prmaddock9 жыл бұрын
that is true. but the b2000 and hardbodies were both either steel or aluminum. also carrying that trans and everything else. it is one thing to make speed in a straight line, keeping speed in curves is something of an art form. if you put an engine producing the same bhp in the elio it would have a better power to wieght ratio because it would be lighter. so keeping speed and maneuverability wouldnt be much of an issue since the vulcan 750 engines weigh a fraction of the weight of the elio engine but produce the same 55-60bhp.

+Archi Roof racks here in the U. S. are my one concession to entertaining a "conspiracy theory". The auto manufacturers tout the Cd for any car meant to sell for its fuel economy, based on the car without the rack. Then they add the rack as a selling point, destroying that Cd big time. My conspiracy theory is that they do this to assuage their partners in crime, the oil companies. This Elio is one of the last newly minted gas cars I suspect will ever be mass marketed here, assuming they can find willing buyers such as our host. Built to obtain an MPG figure all but impossible to gain with a family sedan of equal Cd using just a standard IC engine and having decent performance. As a recumbent bicyclist, I use the formula CdA which incorporates the amount of frontal area. This car has the Cd of my Prius, but the prius is at least twice the frontal area. If I had the Yaris instead which uses the same Toyota engine without hybrid technology, my Mpg would be half of what the Elio is, but carries twice the passenger load. As it is my Prius will outperform the Elio in any LA traffic jam and its engine will last longer doing it because it will be off for more than half the time I spend on the road.

If this is essentially 1200lbs, they could theoretically design a car that's pretty much two of these together that's only 2400lbs
@kamenwaticlients8 жыл бұрын
True but the added safety systems that a car needs to have will weigh it down more. Although there has to be a way around that.
@mistamaog8 жыл бұрын
kamenwaticlients doesn't this also have added safety features? I mean it supposed to score a 5 star safety rating
@kamenwaticlients8 жыл бұрын
It has crash safety but I believe they will have to put airbags and weight sensors in the seats and I think there are a few more added regulations.

I see one bi big problem with this car a matter of fact a dangerous problem . The A and B pillars taking up a bit over 20% of the frontal view . That in its self vary dangerous blind spot on both sides . These pillars need to be are thin. as possible There should not be no more than 5% of total frontal blind spot . I would be prized that the DOT have not for seen this . I would buy one of these in a heart beat but before I go and do that . These post needs to be fixed .
@nrgtim98 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Mullinix I hear you. I have a Scion xb and the pillars block some of the view. Around blind curves, I don't always see car right away.
@ericroot84758 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that this frontal view is way less safe than having a crack in your windshield (which wouldn't even pass inspection). That being said, have you ever sat in a new Challenger? You can't see a damn thing, and you're sitting on 600 HP. Roll cages are apparently impossible to get right.

Sadly due to safety regulations we're going to be stuck with these massive a-pillars forever, and they're just going to get bigger and bigger. I miss the days of the panoramic windshields and tiny or non-existent pillars.

It'd be interesting to see how it performs in winter conditions. Looks like the tire sections are pretty narrow so that can help offer better grip with a good set of winter tires. Also with adequate clearance and w/FWD would help cut into snow should make it very usable year round, adding to the ultimate practicality.

The engine as of now is a suzuki g10 out of a geo metro. I don't know if it's been modified to be marginally lower displacement or if they're just saying 993cc is a .9L but it's a g10 nonetheless. Judging by the pretty much stock airbox and headers, I'd say they haven't modified it at all. Basically the thing is a reshelled metro. Except a geo metro costs about 900 bucks on craigslist, has more wheels, independent rear suspension, seats 4, and actually has hatch space.

Two question and an observation 1) Have you ever heard of an implied stop? 2) Have you ever been to a gym? Also, crash ratings are only valid for the class car they are given in. Therefore a sub-compact 5 star is not equal to a Large Truck 5 star.

I believe the company started in 2008. they have 5 prototypes if I understand it right. I have had diesel VW rabbit pu trucks that got 38 mpg tops. A diesel Ford Escort that got 46 mpg. I have had a honda crx hf that got 53 mpg regularly. I STRONGLY DOUBT acheiving 84 mpg when a 125 cc scooter cannot acheive that. I worry about a company that started in 2008 and doesn't have a building to manufacture from. I was ready to put my money down till I did a little investigating on how far the company has come. So far they have No motor they can call their own, No Mfg Plant, No Manufacturing equipment, they have a startup date and No startup money, tho they are suposedly trying to get a fedral loan for startup. .....So far, I like the idea for the car at it's promises. NOT the Company. I'll wait till they build a car. Just my thought!

I bought a Chevy Sonic Turbo Hatchback with a 6MT with 70k Miles on it. I added RS suspension and a Trifecta tune. It has over 200 horsepower and only weighs twice what an Elio weighs. It gets over 40 mpg average when driven efficiently, handles significantly better than this car, is significantly safer, looks better, has more amenities, holds more passengers, will be likely much more reliable, and is already available to the public! I am into the car, including upgrades, for 5k. The extra 2k offsets the difference in fuel savings. My car and many other cars on the market already are the reason this car will never be produced. It is not practical or competitive. New subcompacts start around 12-15k. Just buy a used one and you are doing yourself a favor. Don't wait for one of these.
