Hahaha. which ones? The 'demons' who tell women with Borderline PErsonality Disorder to punch the buttons for more floors than the one they are going to get off on or the 'demons' left behind by a lot of 'I hope most only young children playing pranks with the elevator system as usual? -- Like how in the high rise building where i used to live they would press the fire alarm button on the main floor just before heading out the final main doors forcing all of the senior citizens to walk down the fire escapes with their walkers again just in case the fire alarm went off for a real reason. After the maintenance replaced the entire elevator system including the elevator cars using a crane for all 3 high rises in a row that sort of thing went on about once a week until I took it upon myself to guard the side door fire escape to see who all was going to try and sneak into the building after the fire alarm was pulled where the security camera system might have been less monitored at the time. After someone asked me what I was doing and I told them By the way an orphan of a single mom who was murdered in that building asked me if I could adopt him. After I guarded that fire escape door of the building by myself during one of those false fire alarm episodes and told people what I was doing those false alarms while I was still living there NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN BEFORE I MOVED OUT MONTHS LATER. And so, unlike 'demons' sometimes it just pays for a person to be different instead of going along with the crowd all the time.

I am a retired psychiatric nurse, took care of hundreds of psychotic and or manic patients over 20 year period. The elevator footage is familiar behavior to me, especially the hand motions and appearing to hide in the corner. I blame her parents. Its been revealed she had a history of not taking her medication regularly and have manic episodes almost identical to what happened. How her parents could let her travel alone to a country she has never been b4 is absolute stupidity and very neglegent. She also was a very silly girl, to stop taking her meds on her trip when in an unfamiliar environment is idiotic. She wanted to prove to herself she could live without medication and be normal.

@@normasalamanca8558 I always wondered why bipolar patients always experience some kind of demon/supernatural attack while being psychotic or in a mania. I asked my therapist but her theory was that manic episodes have to do with your personal daily life experiences. So if you are a religious person its a very good possiblity you will encounter some form of a mania or psychotic behaviour that is linked with supernaturality.

@Thus Spoke Talia It does exist. I am a former probation officer and I have been in places that had the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. Prior to that, I gave very little credence to these types of things and would often roll my eyes when people would talk about it. But I soon learned what those feelings felt like and it can't be mistaken. You know it when you feel it....and I know you know what I'm talking about. That job took me to some very seedy places and when I had experienced those feelings, it seemed to revolve around places that had a lot of illicit drug activity. Drugs really steal a person's soul. Learning to trust my gut saved my life many times. By the way, I hope you never have the occasion to return to the Cecil Hotel.

Lol for sure. According to every self righteous know-it-all person around instead of a pattern of lies coming from one or more people that needs to be still detected concerning Lams' death only demons needed to be ignored to stay away. Lies like being told on occasions one by one that a human being needs all those medications just in case the person taking it who has unpredictable energy levels needs to be around anyone who practices a certain kind of pattern of lies that could cause for example the person prescribed all of that his or her telephone and watch to go missing just before ending up in a tank with the lid later being replaced for them while still being in the tank. So depending on your perspective how best for a person with unpredictable energy levels in their body to save enough of their energy levels for the last time for the person maybe might have to get away from crooks during a holiday is for sure a tricky dilemma always to be in however it is too simplistic to only state the one theory alone as to why a traveler like Lam might have needed more help to survive than only advice on what pills to take when and about how absurd the expectation that you are to be otherwise listening to all of the demons out their full of lies.

You had me laughing out loud while I was alone in the master bedroom, and I turned out to be loud enough everyone heard me and came in to find out what it was I was laughing at. Then, I completely forgot what I wanted to comment on about the video because I was thrown off by the hilarious commentary on Demons and Ghostbusters. What I had wanted to comment on was the elevator video is definitely altered. I’ve worked in television, film and video for 20 years and I’m telling you, without a doubt in my mind, that the video was sped up for some reason. Her actions seem much more bizarre by doing so. If you slow it down to what is more than likely the correct speed, her actions do not seem as bizarre. I would love to understand why the video was adulterated prior to being released to the public.

According to the Netflix series police decided to make the video public because they recently dispatched the majority of the investigation team to a higher priority case. A slowed down version of the video was released so the public would be able to see what she looked like for a little longer, and possibly help find her. But yes it looked slowed down and speeded up in some areas which I think you can see by the movement of the timestamp although the numbers aren't observable. In the series they also showed when the elevator door abruptly closes, it is.already closed about 6 inches indicating that parts of the video could have been cut (and why the timestamp was distorted).. but they never addressed it again and said the footage wasn't edited by the hotel.. strange

Its so sad because I know exactly how she feels, you just wanna do what everyone else does, and you just feel so sick and tired of being sick and tired!! The depression makes you tired but the meds can make doing anything feel like you're trying to function on an OD of sleeping meds!! My heart breaks for her. I was diagnosed bipolar at 18, and all through HS id missed months of school because my meds made me unable to stay awake. I was way over medicated!!! Hi there! That being said, being that mentally coherent isn't always a guarantee, so having a plan in place ahead of time to ensure safety and regularly reviewing it is highly encouraged. Edit: I recommend the crisis plan route because it gives you a rope to hang onto during the crisis, figuratively speaking.

Elisa's death can be explained quite logically. In fact there is well documented evidence of patients during a manic episode to perform high risk activities with little inhibition. This decreased inhibition also encourages some to want to remove clothing during these "phases". Elisa Lam has a history of taking pictures on rooftops in her online history so it was an area she may have been naturally drawn to. Also important is that people having manic episodes do not "become dumber" and Elisa was very intelligent as has been well documented so she could easily have found a way to get to the rooftop if she had so wanted. She also took Seroquel which is an antipsychotic medication but had stopped taking it shortly before her death. Stopping antipsychotic and other mood stabilizing medications suddenly has been well known to cause a patient to cycle into a psychotic phase which could induce hallucinations and delusions in some individuals. As for the tank top being open any number of possibilities exist. The most likely is that it just was already open as was shown to often be the case in later months but Elisa could have opened it when she first got onto the rooftop just to see what it was and left it open. She then could have climbed the ladder for whatever reason, possibly for a better view of the city and then lost her balance and fell into the tank (a sad run of bad luck indeed... but possible nonetheless). Finally, taking her clothes off once in the tank is very easy to explain. 2 major possibilities exist: 1 being she was having delusions already so her delusion simply expanded to include the fact she was in a bathtub and needed to clean herself. Another and probably more likely scenario is that as she sat in the cold water for an extended time she eventually became hypothermic. Hypothermia causes further confusion and paradoxical undressing because patients begin to actually feel as though they are burning up when in fact they are dying of cold. Now, all that said does that mean that there wasn't also someone there contributing to her downfall... no..not at all, but it is certainly possible that an original poor decision to stop taking several of her medication suddenly could easily have led to a runaway cascade of poor outcomes eventually leading to her demise.

Another interesting case! I'm somewhat on the fence with this case. I've traveled the world so I'm definitely biased in that my opinion is influenced by my experience so I'm not 100% objective. I'm thinking that Elisa was more vulnerable as she was traveling alone and likely in the manic phase of her illness, as you mentioned. She would have been in contact with a wide range of hotel staff and guests many of whom would be aware she was traveling alone. She was also staying in a seedy hotel that may have had guests with a criminal history. I also wonder why the hotel felt the need to tamper with the surveillance footage from the elevator if no crime had occurred. I agree with your theory but I also wonder if hotel staff could have been involved. They had access to her room and a ladder. It's interesting that she was found in the water tank as we know that any biological evidence would be destroyed under those circumstances and it would be more difficult to determine the manner of death if there is decomposition of the body. Although some drowning victims have no water in their lungs, I wonder if her body could have been placed in the tank. It was also interesting she was found without clothes but she could have removed them as you mentioned. Your analysis was extremely thorough and detailed and I lean toward your conclusion more than my own. My experiences influence my perspective so I'm the least likely person to make any determinations but it's always interesting to speculate. Thank you for another fantastic analysis, Dr. Grande!
@MateDrinker33
@MateDrinker33 4 жыл бұрын
Most hotels of repute have "a history of seedy guests"; this line of thinking is an example of the "causation as correlation" fallacy. Hotel guests are by nature transient social populations, so any problems or phenomena that arise around guest-originated behavior are actually guest-specific rather than hotel-specific (although if you want to argue a point, it's still possible for the architecture of residential location to influence the behavior of the parties residing there, as the "painting prison cell walls pink" experiment shows).

That's interesting what you mentioned about mania and removal of clothing. It answered a long-held question I had. I used work at a harm reduction/mental health station at large multi-day festivals. This is an off-shoot of first aid, right next to them, and would take in folks who were having a "bad trip" or mental crisis. They needed longer-term care. Physically they were fine and cannot take up space in first aid but mentally were not fine to just be released back into the party. As you can imagine a lot of young folks who made it there I learned upon intake often already had a mental health diagnosis, be on a medication then come to a festival and mix it with some type of drugs and alcohol excessively, and this would trigger what looked like a manic episode. Many would arrive via security having shed some of their clothing, I remember standing with another first aid attendant once and us both wondering what's with all this disrobing? I think in what you said all the pieces fell together for me there.

They were at a festival having a mental crisis? They were definitely high as a kite due to psycho drugs, not having a mental health crisis. I lived in a house where one of my roomates (the room next to me) had died in his bed one night. For 10 days he was lying there decomposing and the smell got worse and worse, until I realized it was coming from his room. Asked the landlord to come and check it out as I had knocked a few times without response. The smell was terrible. I cant imagine drinking water with a person in there. The next week I moved into his room because it was bigger and the same price.

Bipolar Type I and Bipolar Type 2 symptoms present themselves differently in people. In Bipolar Type 2 mania never goes full blown hence it is called hypo-mania. In Bipolar Type 2 depression is more predominant than hypo-mania in the individual. Please Dr. Grande make sure people understand that Bipolar Type 1 and Bipolar Type 2 present differently in people.

Doctor Grande one thing that has bothered me for the longest time in regards to Modern Psychiatry and psychology and it is this why do they not run full endocrine panels on patients before diagnosis considering how much of an effect hormonal imbalances can have on one's personality it seems like this would be common sense instead?

I agree. I also vaguely remember learning about a study that was done a long time ago. A Dr or maybe a scientist studied women who worked as switchboard operators. The study seems to support a link between mental health and exposure to electricity or electromagnetic frequencies. Many women became depressed shortly after they started working at this job. I don't remember the details but I think it would be worthwhile to do more research on it. And definitely, I think there should always be a completely thorough physical evaluation, including to check hormone levels and such, before a psychiatric evaluation is done

THIS! I only ever personally get panic attacks at the end of my period. Like clockwork, every month, this happens. My friend had a nervous breakdown, and it turns out that her thyroid was the culprit. Hormones play a HUGE role in mental health- if not the majority role in many cases.

Sad tragedy. Edit: Mental health is real

@@Lindseyisloony because I have asked many questions on various channels on KZbin, which I meant as just general questions because I was interested in the answer, and got dogpiled for being mean or whatever. Regarding Googling, call me silly, many probably will, but I see "googling" someone for a non essential reason as being intrusive; Dr. Grande clearly saw my question, as it is hearted, presumably by him or someone he trusts;if he wanted me to know the answer, he would likely have answered it. It's really none of my business, and he chose not to answer. Since the answer would have been merely interesting to me but not essential because I am not thinking of hiring him as my therapist, I choose not to seek out the answer. Also googling the answer would likely have only answered the question of whether or not he was in private practice, I would be left to presume the answer to the part about whether or not his channel impacted his practice, it just again seems like a violation to seek the answer from anywhere but the source; just my opinion on googling people - no one has to agree.

I briefly knew a girl that modeled for the art studio I drew at a few times that was diagnosed with bi-polar after having a manic episode. It had eventually led her to taking off all of her clothes and running through the gardens of one of the historic hotels in the area. She was always really calm and quiet so it was quite a surprise to hear her explain what she had experienced. She was so matter of fact about it, "Something in my head told me it was a good idea... " She admitted (and you could see ) she was terrified of the repercussions because she also worked with kids and was afraid the incident was going to hurt her work as a nanny. I'm not sure if she was able to get proper help, I certainly hope so, but it was very similar to how you described this person; She probably went to explore the roof, noticed the water tank and thought "yes. perfect. I could use a swim."

To address some of the demon theorists arguments: "the elevator behaved oddly" - it didn't. She pressed "hold" button more than twice. That's why the door stayed open longer. "there is no way of getting to the roof without alerting" - some youtuber already demonstrated doing this. "there was no way of her getting in to the top of the water tank without a ladder" - same youtuber showed how to do it easily. "the top was closed behind her" - it wasn't. The hotel originally said it was closed but recanted their story later. The original story was just to make them look less careless "she didn't fit through the opening" - she did. The body was just bloated. "they had to cut a part of the tank to get her out" - lowering yourself down to a tank is much easier than lifting a dead body out of it. If you haven't noticed, a dead body won't help you out with hands to lift itself up.

It's possible Elisa Lam could have been drugged without her consent or chose to intentionally ingest some other substance that was not prescribed to her. LSD, for instance, would not have come up in the toxicology report as it has a very short half-life, thereby the ability to detect the drug drops significantly in just several hours. It's also possible that, as a lone transient, Elisa Lam was targeted and fell prey to malicious activity. Perhaps she was the victim of an occult ritual and was made a sacrificial lam(b) of sorts. Who knows? But she was staying at a pretty shady hotel. And one can't so easily deny the existence of people who engage in such practices as one can deny the existence of demons. And you have to admit, there are a lot of extremely uncanny coincidences surrounding this case too, namely this: There was a tuberculosis outbreak in Los Angeles not long before the Elisa Lam case occurred, and eerily enough, the TB test was called Lam Elisa. A couple other creepy coincidences: The hotel was called the Cecil, and the little girl in the movie, Dark Water, is named Cecilia. There is a drawing by occultist, Aleister Crowley, depicting a demon he had channeled, and the demon's name is Lam. Could Elisa Lam's death be the tragic consequence of a severe manic episode coupled with the absence of a friend or family member who could intervene on her behalf? As someone who suffers from mental illness himself, including social anxiety and depression, I certainly do not deny the possibility. But could there have been some spiritual implications to this case? As a Bible-believing Christian, I believe that is a possibility as well. Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Or... you could go for the actual logical and rational explanation, she had a psychotic break of some sort due to not taking her medication, something which was revealed during the autopsy iirc, and wound up in the water tank entirely on her own volition. Which is clearly what happened.
