The one thing you definitely cannot fault ED for, it's immersive sound effects! I'll never forget my first encounter with a Thargoid that interdicted me...I was in my ASP Explorer just minding my own business exploring the galaxy then BAM....I was yanked out of hyperspace. I was like a deer in the headlights! It was an experience in my 30+ years of gaming that I'll never forget. Brilliant. :) A quick change of underwear and I was back in the game .. :D

You know, with how ominous this feels, I could be convinced that the development of the frameshift drive in the ED universe was derived from the same interdimensional travel experiments which lead to the creation of a portal to Hell in the Doom universe. Pretty sure the only difference is that in the ED universe someone remembered to carry the 1, and now we get spooky FTL travel instead of demons.

considering Capital FSD's are based on Thargoid tech, i'm pretty sure it IS a portal being ripped in space-time. Instead of folding space around the ship like a standard FSD, it bores a wormhole tunnel directly to the exit system.

I used to play EVE online and was a big lore nut in that game but ive been looking for a space exploration game for a while. No Mans Sky is dead and Star Citizen is in alpha, so I decided to get into Elite Dangerous.

Maybe not most of it... Sound design absolutely. The rest I can't really agree with given that the quality of content the team has been pumping out has consistently been less-than-acceptable since the launch of Horizons. The speed of development and the lack thereof in the literal sense of the word "development" has been abysmal. The Scorpion has been in the game since 2018 in an unfinished state (wheels weren't quite modelled out, physics could do some working on, guns didn't work). It took them two years to fix the guns, rework srv physics (what they had done it Odyssey) and model out the wheels. Ships like the Panther Clipper were found in the same datamine that the Scorpion was originally found in (and like the scorpion they were able to spawn it in in a testing environment) and the cockpit was almost nothing (ui worked) and on the systems panel it showed up as a Gutamaya ship with no extra info. I suspect a 2025 launch of that one given it's current state. It's just terrible. Slow and disappointing.

When I first saw these bigger fsd jumps I just thought it was some sort of weird sciencey (game design) reason that they were cloaked in smoke and haze but I'm realizing now that it's probably dragging in witchspace with it. Which makes me wonder how crazy it would be if someone were to use a powerful enough fsd to bore a hole into witchspace and keep it open. I wonder what would happen? 🤔

From what I know of the lore that's actually what it does. Since the larger capital ships all have older FSD modules. They tear open a hole into 'Witchspace' and fly into it; transporting the ship to its destination near instantly at superluminal speeds

just to point out something, fleet carrier and capital ship jump have slightly different VFX, capital ships have a blue warping aura around it while fleet carriers don't, probably a little goof on the part of the animation guy/team, also the witch space smoke is a little better in the capital ship jump.
