A last note: As with anything that requires the development of skill, it is best to just do it. WOW! I can't believe how much the first set of training exercises helped me! its incredible really, you did such a great job isolating this stuff and breaking it down into bite sized chunks my brain could really quickly digest! Once I just started getting the basics of that first station tethering exercise I could just feel my subconscious starting to "click". I would try to move to another spot (like the axis) and be so sure I was going to hit something but suddenly my hands just translated "i need to go here" into thruster controls for me! it was such a surprise! I'm still a bit wobbly on my space legs, but it is soooooo far and above what I was able to do before. It was really great buzzing through the asteroid fields, swooping around and between them once I got familiar with the exercises there and decided to just play around. I'm really excited to start the next set, all docked up in the San Tu system, I'll look for the science station tomorrow. thanks again! Very excited to have passed that first hurtle I was facing, it honestly felt insurmountable which was a bummer. liked and subbed!

The element I think CMDRs notice first once flying FA Off 'clicks', is the shear joy of flying. You know those cartoons with personified spaceships flying around and messing about, that's what it feels like! You really do feel at one with the ship. When you first embark, you think it will be too exhausting thinking about performing all the corrections just to fly. But after a surprisingly brief amount of time you stop thinking about it and you just 'do'. It's like you don't think about picking up a cup or worry about making the corrections to prevent it from spilling; the same thing happens with FA-Off! Great video once again Moxen Wolf. Regards Andy (CMDR Aweman or CMDR Darth Numpt)

I've been looking for a good space piloting sim, and as a flight instructor this is probably the best and cheapest way for me to have fun and let loose with flying. I wanted to thank you. I found your video series while out in the black 40 jumps from galactic center. I started round the exercises I could like "nap of earth" (that's what they called it in the Falcon 2.0 F16 training) and landing on planets. I didn't want to lose all the saved data I collected so I planned on self destruction once I got back to Colonia and joining the Newton's Gambit. Low and behold there was a few fleet carrier out there. So I sold my data and blew myself up. Instead of rebuying my current ship I selected a free sidewinder in my original station. Decided to fly to Nauru, but I didn't want to take 50 jumps to get there so I stopped in another system and bought another phantom to engineer and get there quicker. On the way I lined some gold for Lei Chemung and there was this fast spinning asteroid with a sub service deposit I couldn't quite match the spin, but I thought it for a good w while until the deposit disappeared. It taught me so much. I decided to call it for the night so I head out to Leesti and I get interdicticted with no weapons on my ship. I out maneuvered that NPC thanks to you and was able to deliver the gold I was even able to land a few times not pretty at all but I'm getting there. I'll be going through all the proficiency training next. You've made a great game even better for me.

So I've tried learning FAOFF a couple of times before, but always had trouble with overcorrection and fine adjustments. I'd been thinking about switching from my HOTAS setup to KB+M controls, and after watching your first video, I decided bite the bullet and kill two birds with one stone. Within an hour of dropping into the game, switching to a Sidey, and struggling my way out of the station, it just sort of "clicked," much like when I learned how to drive a stick shift. I'm still working on developing a KB mapping I like, but I really appreciate your tutorials, and can't wait to start practicing the level 2 exercises!

God damn, you make it look so easy but then i try it with my mid-level mouse/keyboard setup and i'm like "WOOOOAAOAOAAAH!" found a neat set-up tutorial for mouse-keyboard with FA-OFF, so hopefuly that'll save me some tears. Saving up for some dual-sticks so it'll probably be good to get a "feel" for the moving around before I get'em... I seriously want FA-OFF in my skill-set soo bad though. I've always worked on toggling it off for turning in dogfighting, and that helps way more than it sounds like it would, but this is another level. I can see the moves in my head. The sick curves and vectors that you can move in while NEVER taking your eyes off the thing you're murdering is sooo enticing. Meanwhile, everyone's flying like a plane and they think they're fancy if they can fly backwards XD great vids btw!

Something I just realized. FA on and off is very similar to American shopping carts vs Australian shopping trolleys. In America, the carts have *fixed* rear wheels, meaning you push the cart forward and then steer it to go where you want. When I moved to Australia, I noticed that their carts (trolleys) have castors on both the front and rear wheels. I found this insanely frustrating at first, trying to steer the cars around the grocery store. But after _years_ I have gotten used to it and you have to treat the things very much like you treat a ship with FA off. The direction of travel really has nothing to do with where the "front" is facing.

I have to say one thing though about the first video. I was having a hard time with the notion of anchoring until I actually thought about the physics and realized that, with my nose pointed at the station, I was using the primary thruster to essentially simulate a gravitational pull towards the core, then using my lateral thrusters to get closer or to speed up and miss a collision. I don't know if you covered that way of looking at it and I missed it, just thought it was an interesting notion to share.

Well done CMDR!!! I have this (and a graphic to go with it) on the slate for the next video, Proficiency #3, because the one tethering exercise in #3 is much more difficult if you don't think of it in this way. But you beat me to it! Very well done! Keep thinking like that and you will be a stellar FAOFF Commander! Hint for the Proficiency #3 exercises: The tethering exercise in #3, and indeed the only exercise using the Primary Thruster in that level, is performed on the inside of the exterior ring of an Orbis station.
@Cretaal
@Cretaal 7 жыл бұрын
I've played a lot of kerbal and I'm a space nerd, and it seemed to make sense when I realized I was trying to hit the station and veering off to avoid collision in a manner that struck an... orbit... like how the ISS strikes its orbit by going fast enough to miss the object that it's falling in towards. Just had to think of boosting towards it instead of falling and it made more sense. Same with the planet and seeing my vector as I would in kerbal. I've been taking this planetary exercise a step further and doing a sort of wave racer scenario. Keep the radar as close as I can. If I see a jump, boost at it, hug the slope, jump and do a few tricks like a back flip or a lateral rotation, or a roll and pitch tumble, then land it flat and keep going. Figured I'd tell you between eagles XD getting used to the roll and pitch tumbles still. Either way, you're inspiring me to think creatively about the physics of the game and how to play around with FA off in ways I never thought about before. Thank you. I was always jealous of Isinona and his abilities, always tried to match him. Never made sense or clicked until your video series, but I'm no longer jealous because I'm able to pull those ball-tightening maneuvers on planetary surfaces as well now. Thanks for the hand up! This is bound to open up the galaxy to me in ways I haven't yet realized. Going to be using a lot of this knowledge to go to the starter systems and keep the greifers from ganking newbies. Nobody ganks muh newbs. And who's going to expect an eagle to give them that much trouble, anyways?

Very interesting.. I'm mostly exploring and don't use FAOff much.. but kinda curious how ppl fly FAOff.. I have my exploration Elite.. and not much else. Wanted to get into combat.. that's how I ended up here... 6:21 never thought of it like that.. but seeing the list (the only one I could come up with myself is -> it's where the pewpew goes) It's directly obvious.. that using the primary thrusters in the way FAOn pilots do.. it gets in the way of the other 3... you can't keep aim while also trying to vector in a "traditional" sense...

2 things. First of all, this is infinitely more entertaining to fly with FAOFF for myself and those that tend to watch me as one day I'll land perfectly, the next I'll be wiggling around all over the place. FAOFF landings in big ships are an occasion to witness for sure. Second, I had a SCfanboy coming to lecture me about how Elite's Flight model sucks because it's " planes in space ".. They went pretty quiet after I told them to watch my stream instead of getting into an argument.

Really inspired by a lot of these tips. Although as a keyboard player I probably won't be using FA off as my primary mode, I can see how these training methods could help even with FA on. I wonder though, is it practical to do this in a dogfight? Would it be too much mental burden to navigate your craft (often without solid reference point) AND having to worry about all the other aspects of fighting?

BUT one thing that's missing is HOW you are performing these maneuvers...like what inputs are you using and when? How are you combining inputs (forward thrust +upward thrust, how much of each)? Are there other videos/tutorials that go into more detail on the actual mechanics of the flight of HOW to do these maneuvers? Right now I'm practicing, but don't want to get used to doing it the "wrong" way, or making it harder than it needs to be etc.

I'm on keyboard and mouse, but still using this guide. After using fa off for a couple hours basically playing bumper cars; fa on feels so stiff it's unfortable. Guess I got no choice except master fa off now.

I really like seeing the potential of faoff demonstrated, HOWEVER, my environment, my tiny laptop footprint etc. support only KB/Mouse and i can't relate to taking lessons from a joystick player or at least the lack of the mouse widget here. you might want to consider a level 6, thargoid interceptors with faoff keyboard mouse.

Greetings Commander, thanks again for another great video! I had an idea that I wondered if it could benefit your tutorials - if it's possible for you to access or include somehow - would be the inclusion of an onscreen virtual controller display, I'm not sure which programs actually do this, but something that measures the controller inputs and displays them onscreen to show just how fine the adjustments to controls actually are during FAO, and how often you re-centre the stick/input too. Sorry I can't describe it much better than that, hope it makes some kind of sense!

I know exactly what you're talking about and I think it's an excellent teaching aid! The problem is that right now I'm using ShadowPlay to capture and the controller overlay that you're talking about, to my knowledge, only works in OBS or something similar. I used to use OBS a while back but I can't seem to get OBS to record at 60fps smoothly even when I use the NVidia Codec. I'm positive that it's just a configuration thing that I'm doing wrong. In any case, I would love to include this into training.

Perhaps someone could show a controller setup? Two joysticks? Hotas? How do ya get the side thrusters in the mix?

are you still using a x52 hotas? Are you using TrackIR? I have had a hard time setting it up so trying to look to the sides or up is impossible to me. Shinanigans! I am calling Shenanigans! Have you digitally edited your videos to superimpose "FA OFF" on your info display.? It is amazing to me that it just appears as those you have literally zero over control on any axis. I am jiggling around every axis until I just go out of control. Not to mention 10 minutes of playing the game this way and I have a massive stress migraine. I could not imagine playing with FA off permanently. I'd have a migraine that would feel like my head was about to explode

Thank you for this awesome series of videos! Very much appreciated! Made me change my way of thinking about FA off! I do have a question .... it's about the setup of the controls. I do play on XBOX and i find it very hard to control the ship in fa off without overcorrecting ... I assume you do play on pc but do you have any recommandations for the setup of the control if you play with a game pad? Keep up the great work and greetings from germany!

Thank you for the comment and the question! I've been to Germany twice and I loved it both times :D You're right, I'm on a PC and HOTAS. I'm working on trying to encourage more FAOFF Commanders to post their take on setups for controls (that goes for KB+M and Controllers as well). Give me a couple days and let me see if I can grab some pointers from some Gambit Commanders on working with the XBox Controller. I wish I had some specific controller advice but I know that someone out there does. I'll let you know as soon as I have a lead.

Hi Sir Tobi, I was with a CMDR last night and we worked on trying to get the best config for XBox. To get the controller to feel right we had to reduce the deadzone for the right analogue which was pitch and roll to the lowest it could go above zero (5-10%?). (His default had a deadzone of about 20%.) [EDIT] Please see HelloMeow (below) or Nox210 for controller layout!

Hi Andrew, thank you for sharing this information. The deadzones are definitely a problem! I will play with the deadzone settings in E:D and, since i own an Elite Controller i also play with the control settings in the controller support app. What i find difficult in this setup is the fact that i would have to use the stick buttons to fire the weapons and if i understood everthing correctly i would loose the ability to change power distribution cause the dpad is used for increase decrease throttle by 25%I assume by shoulder you refer to the bumbers and HAT is the dpad ... correct?

An xbox controller is very usable for FA off. You want to make sure that every axis for both rotation and thrust is bound to an unique and somewhat intuitive input. I've been using this layout for over 2 years now: forward / backward thrust: right and left bumper left / right thrust: left and right stick click up / down thrust: left stick y axis roll: right stick x axis yaw: right stick y axis pitch: left stick x axis This leaves the triggers free for firing hardpoints. Another useful feature is button combinations. This lets you put most frequently used functions on the controller. I mostly use combinations like a + dpad for a lot of different functions.

What's the best thrust axis mode when setting up a throttle controller? Also this "your primary thruster doesn't need to be active" how do I make it not be active.

Hi Moxen Wolf, I really enjoy your flight off assist training. I'm jealous in a good way with you expertise driving your spaceship. Just a curious question. Are you using some kind of headtracking control or just the way in which you pilot give you the opportunity to see in this marvelous way the Elite universe? Thanks for your videos. I like a lot and hoping more. Greeting from Spain. :)

+Carlos Moreno Thank you for the comment and for watching! Yes, I use TrackIR for my head look. I have a custom profile that I've made for it that refines some of the axis to better fit into how Elite's cockpits are layed out. For the external views, I'm just using the in-game external camera suite. I'm going to use the external camera for a couple of exercises in the next video to expose some of the details about what is goin on.

Can I ask about your control config for your HOTAS? I have a X52 so same same but just keep fiddling in the control setup and still not sure what works best as I am a novice FAOFF flyer. Ive increased my throttle deadzones as well as control deadzone which has helped in the over correcting but some suggest using curves for controller (I dont think the x52 can set itself) any suggestions would be awesome.

But isn't primary thrust either important in fa-off with all the ship thrusters having different strength? For example those behind you are the strongest, while those on the side are weakest. Also top thrusters are a little weaker than bottom ones.

These are great videos, but i am curious... Whats the benefit of always using fa off, rather than toggling on and off? Seems like toggling is the tactically superior choice. I mean learning to fly with faoff is smart, and im working on it, but especially for big ships its not always practical to fly with faoff.

Since you're still so new to the game 100% of your focus should be on getting a better ship. You don't need the most expensive ships but just get something better.

I play my FA off like the old ass Asteroids arcade game, which relies heavily on the main thruster, i only use lats to correct and stabilize. however your talk of thinking the lateral thrusters as if the same as the primary has me skeptical because i don't think they have the same amount of thrust power as the primary. are you able to confirm if they do or not? unless you did in video and i wasn't paying attention to it

Does Newton’s Gambit include rotational correction as something to be turned off? I couldn’t tell if you were using it or not in the video because of how much control you have over your spaceship!
@moxenwolf1020

Rotational Correction actually does nothing as a function when you have Flight Assist turned Off. It seems to be simply a function of the FAON Computer. You can test this by stabilizing yourself with FAOFF inside a station and toggling it on and off.

The objective: To become good with FAOFF using a 360 controller + chatpad (mini keyboard) & not touch the desktop keyboard, no trackir either. It's been years since I last played, I used to have the x52 & have FAON. So FAOFF veterans is this possible?
