@@trashcan7340 To walk around and off your ship, In SC something as simple as [getting out, going to a planet-base and grabbing a mission, then getting back in] is made 10x cooler and immersive by making the player action those steps. In Elite, you press exit and you're out. You lose the immersion, the feel of humanity. So you lose the entire cool aspect of walking planetside purely down to that very first action failing you. Your first step is automated. In SC, your first step takes you roughly 3ft closer to the exit. Walking around may lose its "Wow!" quickly, but the feeling and immersion it brings is permanent. Given that all of the content he suggests could happen without interiors at all, how much extra would you be willing to pay for the interiors without any content? IE, if you could pay 30 bucks for EVA and Salvaging, how much more would you add on for the interiors? another 20 bucks? 30?

I'd rather see a port to Vulkan first so we'd have a solid modern render engine. As can be seen, DirectX 11 really doesn't handle it well - you really don't want to add VR support to that. Using Vulkan offers better compatibility with open source but OTOH, DirectX 12 could work fine, too, the open source layer vkd3d for translating DX12 to Vulkan is performing quite well. That said, my ships are powered by Linux and it works well. 🙂

What it would take for me to come back to elite: - Renewed focus on single player / solo activities - a more personal structured narrative. Ie a purpose beyond work for the sake of work. More like a choose your own adventure rather than an rpg or no individual story. - faster progress in the galaxy’s story - something in-game equivalent to Eddb - a way to catch up on years of grind / developments without more years of grind - stop nerfing any reasonable way of making significant money. Either make things cheaper or let people make more money. overall, I’ve always wanted elite to have more narrative beyond what developers make special for themselves to do on live streams, and to be able to play elite without it needing to be a full time job’s worth of grinding. You shouldn’t HAVE to put 40 hours a week into elite to get anywhere. Sadly, I lost faith a long time ago that frontier was capable of any of this, nevermind that they’d actually do it.

The grind just needs to be totally redone. There should be a variety of ways to collect materials, but they went the 'hardcore mobile gacha' route of having tons of exclusive currencies for incremental upgrades. It's terrible. At least give us a passive collector. Small mining devices that can hold X amount that we can leave in an area to gather up mats per day. Also if Thargoids are the new gameplay focus, give new players 'baby thargoid' stuff so they can start from Day 1 and slowly build up to scouts and interceptors. And while I don't agree with having a story, new players NEED to be guided to the good content somehow. My friend yesterday was SHOCKED that I thought elite was good, because he, like many players, bought it because it looked like a cool space game, and was totally and utterly lost. Not everyone is going to go the youtube/guide/how do i play this route, many will just get a refund. I even explained to my stepdad that the good content had to be worked for, but he did like 3 repetitive mission board missions and lost all interest. I can't really blame him, the cool content is locked away pretty good.

@@caramba10 Worth it at the base price, as ships, gear, clothes, guns, skins, and whatever can be gotten with in-game cash. The prices on things aren't insane in-game. There's no billion dollar ship. You're looking more at the 1-5 million dollar range for most, and that's easy to make in a day. Even with starter ships, you can easily make 100k an hour. You can also rent ships in-game with in-game money. So you can go rent out some big ship for 5,000$ (peanuts) for the day or week or whatever and do something that makes more money with it. My favorite when I started out, was renting a Cutlass Black and ROC miner, and mining in caves/on the surface. Used to make 100-150k an hour mining hadanite. It was convenient because the shop I was using had all the mining gear in the world for sale/rent. Suits, tools, equipment, you name it. Also sold one of the biggest backpacks in the game there.

@@caramba10I recommend at least getting the Avenger package if you're starting out. You get a ship with a bed, an actual decent weapon hard point load out to do actual combat, it has a cargo bay and most importantly two ways of entering the cockpit that includes an ejection seat. Easy to make money with the ship to upgrade to other ships if you want. @jtrillo1115
@jtrillo1115 Жыл бұрын
It would be great if interiors allowed you to do niche things that you wouldn't be able to do from the cockpit. Some of my ideas would mostly apply for explorers, for example: Your AFMU is understandably never able to repair your powerplant, since that's what powers your AFMU in the first place. Manual repairs on modules would be something only you yourself could do, while the entire ship is powered down and you have to navigate with a torch to the maintenance panel and crawl into your power plant. Or the same with the AFMU itself, if you aren't carrying 2. * Manual module repairs * Access to the fuel tanks to be able to dump fuel * Being able to tweak modules, maybe temporarily, to perform small new functions - Tweak your navigation computer to be able to manually set a long list of jumps, which automatically routes your ship. With spansh's neutron plotter, this would be two or three times more efficient than the in-game plotter. - Tweak your cockpit HUD display to remove or re-add certain aspects, such as remove an the top right or bottom left information panels, or remove the selection rings around bodies when your cursor is near them - Tweak your FSS to be able to function while moving or while charging the FSD - 'Hack' your docking computer to let it auto-land on planets while you're inside your ship, because it already can when you're not for some reason??? * Lock doors or vent the atmospheres of select rooms One thing that would actually make performing most of these things fun would be adding *room for error*. You could try to repair your powerplant, or make an error and damage it even further. You could try to dump a small amount of fuel, or forget a step and end up dumping all but a ton of it. Or start a fire. It would be great if there was some challenge to doing these things, as these operations are no longer being carried out by the certainty of machine. Even better if what you're doing actually looks like what you're trying to do for the more complex tasks, as oppose to some minigame that serves as a front which has no connection. For example if when having to repair a power plant, you have to actually determine the fault. The more it is like real world engineering, the cooler it would be. These are just a few ideas, and something tells me implementing such gameplay would take a LOT of thought, resources, and time.

Maybe if something like Elite Dangerous 2.0 was announced to be worked on, with secured financing and houndred new developers hired and assigned to it, than maybe it could be close to reality. But... It sometimes takes a long time to get places in Elite. I think that if there was ship interiors it would give the player something to do on long voyages. They could walk around their ships, interact with crew, look out windows. There could be something like a holodeck for combat simulations. If something comes during the voyage like ship interdiction, alarms could go off and the player would have to hurry back to the bridge.

The Thargoid stuff is cool, but if I had to choose between that or the above, Id pic the above. I just wish I had a solid idea of what they want to do with the game.

So.. pretty much "what if Elite: Dangerous: was as ambitious as Star Citizen". Most, if not all of these things you mentioned are features CIG is actively trying to develop... wich is crazy to think of. Of course, the question with Star Citizen/CIG is if they'll ever be able to make those dreams a reality, or at least within a human lifespan... but that's another question altogether. I do hope we will eventually have a space game that has these elements, if not Elite or SC, then whatever is next.

Your "another question" is already answered. SC is buggy and incomplete and I'm not denying that - However it already has more gameplay than Elite. Just in a smaller area. The gameplay overlaps between the games, SC also just does it better IMO. As of 3.19 I can stowaway on someone's ship, wait till they leave port, hack through their doors and start ripping components out of their slots in an effort to take the ship. Then I can fly it back to my own ship, and take cargo from its cargo bay. Then I call up my salvager friend who strips the hull for even more profit, further filling up my cargo. I can use some of the reclaimed materials to repair my ship or build some tools for later as well. This is existing gameplay right now. Imagine where it goes when the systems like salvaging get past tier 0. Its been a slow grind with many problems for both games. Elite already will never match that existing gameplay in SC, and FDev have told us so directly.

If Elite Dangerous had Ship Interiors, I would most certainly still be playing the game today. Heck, it might even keep me occupied through all the grinding for materials that Odyssey brought along with it. It still irks me greatly that the 'most requested feature fans wanted' wasn't highly requested enough... To me, Elite died with Odyssey, but, I would certainly give it another shot if ship interiors were introduced, and not just some cockpit limited nonsense. It has to be something on the scale of Star Citizen.

I'd love to see this stuff implemented. Other games are attempting it and it's taking a lot of development work to get right. NMS has the derelict hunting, SC has smuggling and EVA, Eve has the science, market and module blueprints. It'd love for Elite to expand upon its current gameplay and offer more depth to it. This would be a huge undertaking though with FDev needing to commit to many years of development. Saying that... we're all hoping Elite will be there for many years to come, so why not invest in the game more?

First of all, I wanted to thank you @ObsidianAnt for a great video. To be honest I was disappointed not to see ship interiors or EVA with the arrival of Odyssey but I still hoped it was in production as it is a logical next step after space legs release, only to hear after about a year of waiting that Fdev has no plans for it or even developing the exploration aspect of the game, which was the main reason for me to playing Elite. And yes, like thousands of other players, believe that this is an inherent element of space legs and this kind of content would give Elite a lot more depth and character that it loses over the years but only if it's done well.

FTL was developed back on Earth afterwards and they were forgotten. So, centuries later when a galaxy wide civilisation has been established, these generation ships start turning up. Each one's a different horror story of dystopian madness and post humanism where those onboard turned into the monsters. Trying to board one is the stuff of nightmares. It's excellently done.

Midjourney was really good at capturing Elite Dangerous's aesthetic. Also with regards to ship maintenance- there are a couple of ways that could go. I think these are reasonably and don't add busywork that wasn't already there: 1: Offer a discount for 'DIY installation' for modules, so when a module is first purchased it can be installed by the player at a discount compared to if it was bought normally. 2: Allow players to repair hull and module damage themselves. Repair limpets remain useful still as players won't be able to realistically EVA for repairs in a dangerous situation. 3: Add a system for modules and hull to be repaired over their usual hitpoints in a sort of 'well maintained' status that isn't available from starport repairs.

I feel adding interiors would add so much to Elite Dangerous. Another thing would be the greater ability for role play. For instance, I have friends that would love to join me in Elite Dangerous, but do not want to be ship pilots. Hiring friends to jump on your ship and have them crew certain aspects or even be able to do the job of certain modules. For instance, want to outfit something else in that slot being occupied by an AFM, hire a friend that will run around and repair damaged elements. No room for that limpet controller, have your crew jump into maneuverable space suits. Interiors would bring Elite Dangerous one more step closer for table top space gamers to want to play too. Plus so many other game play elements this would add if done right. So I agree with you, adding interiors would most likely in my humble opinion spark new life back into Elite.

Space combat would be transformed if you could disable and board an enemy ship, then salvage engineered modules and/or extract blueprints. Victims could choose to self destruct to deny the spoils, attackers could race to manually override the sequence. EVA forced breach of an airlock could be a really interesting mechanic, with specialised tools allowing faster, easier and less destructive ingress. The smuggling potential is immense. Imagine arranging to dock in an adjacent hanger bay, then having to hack security cameras and physically move cargo to your buyer through maintenance hatches in a station interior.

Interiors would be a dream. But "There is no content for ship interiors and it would be too tedious to run through your ship every time" as Frontier once said. ... Despite the fact that even explorers like me (who arguably have the most boring game loop of them all) could come up with at least 10-20 different things/loops that would have a use for ship interiors. ... But Frontier is so out of touch with their community ... it's nothing but wishful thinking. .... They didn't even manage to fix Odyssey to a state that's worth playing. Especially in the exploration sector. Even Star Citizen, which has only one System, has more visual variety and things to find than Elite in billions of systems. ... And that's sad. I miss my Type-9 and I want to continue my 9,000LY Expedition ... but Odyssey made it so boring ... it just looks the same everywhere.

Vehicle interiors work so well in many other games. Space engineers has the option to walk the corridors and utilise the space for whatever you need, power, weapons, cargo, refining, etc. FTL offers up control over ship systems to balance over different encounters. While multi-crew interiors could offer up gameplay akin to Star Trek Bridge crew for co-operation, system control and emergency repairs, etc. in combat, exploration and more. Ship interiors alone could have put Elite on a whole new level but it all now seems like a fading dream of the past.

If I get to add my 5 cents, involved ship repair could be an amazing alternative / parallel mechanic to rebuying and / or respawning. EG If you die in a really inconvenient or annoying place or with a full load of cargo, you could, instead of choosing to respawn, survive, troubleshoot, and restore emergency functionality of your ship and navigate back to a haven in ieder to save your cargo or prevent a rebuy. This would avoid making the process grindy since you can simply choose to respawn instead. Also, manual maintenance of the ships subsystems could be unnecessary, but provide a small performance boost for those who want to get the absolute best out of their ship!

And whilst we are on board, we could have in games as we tour our ship - such as improve items - discuss side quests with passengers and crew - have a proper explorer console to improve the scanners we have now - prevent some cargo from reducing in value as we manage environment controls (random alerts fire and we react) - prevent boarding and pirating - take a tactical team mission on where the team board your ship and you discuss mission in the hold and go on combat with the team...

Here’s my theory on why they didn’t add ship interiors. They didn’t have the talent to code a system for moving between two different physics grids like Star Citizen. So they decided to gas light the player base with every weak excuse in the book for why it wasn’t done. My favorite from Art during a live stream was: “it would get boring and tedious moving through the ship to get in and out of it”. I think that was the moment I was truly done with the game as I have no tolerance for intellectual dishonesty.

From a technical standpoint, ED is a mishmash of various game loop and game mechanics added at different times. Odyssey was probably the most ambitious addition to the game to date, but ship interiors are a whole different can of worms. It means a potential mobile environment so you can't just re-use some of the station interior mechanics since those are fixed. Then you need add gameplay loops like possible boarding, things that have to interface with existing game loops and mechanics and it really gets complicated. To have these features, ED would have to be re-built from the ground up.

I'd like to say that ship interiors would bring me back to Elite, but now that I have seen how good SC can be (when it works) I think I would struggle. Elite with ship interiors would work well as a single player (or multi-solo-player) game, but in a true multiplayer title the physicalisation of everything adds so much to the experience. Crash on the way to your destination? Your buddy can fetch a ship, cargo can be moved over, and we continue on with me manning one of the turrets until we reach the destination. Need to fetch something from a base? One player is the pilot, the other is dropped off in a vehicle and heads into the base to extract it. Out exploring? Fill a ship with scout ships and use it as a portable base. The possibilities are endless, but the game needs to cater for them.

You had some ideas I never thought about with ship interiors. I really love the idea of interacting with npcs or actually seeing your hired pilots. Primarily I thought interiors also maybe space-walks would be a way to do damage repairs or upgrades. With multi-crew you could even have friends help keep a ship intact while it fights on. Having a few stations on a ship could be neat to have. Like a planetary survey station where a player can do all the exploration tasks, maybe to greater effect than a pilot’s station. Lastly it would do wonders to make a ship feel like your own if you could do a little visual customization. Have a crew quarters, put down trinkets, change interior colors. Or imagine being able to fix the cable management on craft like the Krait Mk.2! All these little details to personalize a ship and make if feel like a home or feel like your own ship. Unfortunately all I could see FDev doing is the minimum effect with the maximum mundane grind. Love the content Ant! Keep it up!
