I hate to be the "Um Actually, Jingles" person (no I don't :P), but Mercury isn't actually tidally locked to the sun. It's rotation and orbital periods are in a 2-3 resonance. The first probe sent to fly by Mercury did 2 passes at just the right interval that both times the same side was facing the Sun, leading to the false conclusion. Further study showed the error
@logandarklighter4 жыл бұрын
And also lead to Larry Niven's "The Coldest Place" short story which described a visit to Mercury's supposed tidally locked dark side. He wrote the story after that first series of probes had given the false data. Sent the story in to John Campbell for publishing in the sci-fi- magazine he ran at the time. But just before the issue went to print, the CORRECT data was made known. And he actually sent a message to Campbell apologizing for the error and asking if Campbell still wanted the story and if he didn't, Niven would understand and take no offense. Campbell waved it off and published it anyway. It wasn't Niven's fault he reasoned that science marched on and made the story obsolete in it's depiction of Mercury. Besides, he told Niven, he didn't always pick stories for Scientific Accuracy, but whether they were GOOD STORIES. And he considered Niven's worth publishing by that criteria. :D

In the sandbox that this game is, where wherever you look everything is just sand in the end, you'll need to build your own sandcastle.The ability to fly there for that long for no apparent reason shows that you'll be able to forge your own story, or build your own sandcastle. Suggestion for places to visit next: "Strong G". It's a bit of a trip, 1387 ly away from Sol, but an amusing place to land. As its name implies, it's a high gravity world. 9.77g infact (which is NOT the record highest for landables, by the way). Landing there is a fairly interesting task (as is all high g worlds) compared to normal. Even more difficult then Achenar 3 (which, if you haven't been too, is a good practice planet at 6.73g). Obviously, I'd suggest doing some minor research on ways to approach high-g landings if you do choose to go. It does have a fairly nice view, and of course, worth it for bragging rights. And if you can safely land and take off from high-g worlds, you can pretty much land anywhere. I've also been to Skardee 1 before. Been ages, but landed my conda there. If I remember right, I nearly fried her to death on take off, I completely forgot to bring heat sinks with me when I chose to go, and by the time I realized it, I was too far in to turn around. Did actually land near the terminator line, however. Fun view from there. It's always nice seeing a star take up almost the entire sky.

My first excursion in an SRV was me trying to drive the damn thing with a hotas, constantly bouncing in and out of the options to tweak things and after a few hours hating it enough to avoid driving for a month or so. These days I use a 360 controlled for the buggy and it works a charm with only downside being that the speed of the buggy means no VR due to motion sickness (trackIR is fine)

Poor Jingels ! Whats that your asking for? Did you say you want the sun screen or the sun block? Just a minute . * Looks around for a minute then grabs a bottle and tosses it at Jingles * Watches as Jingles franticily starts applying the contents of said bottle vigerously too his skin. * Suddenly gets the over whelming urge for Honey BBQ. * Then accknowlages his mistake. Sorry Jingles that was a bottle of BBQ sauce.

Interestingly, Mercury is not tidally locked in a 1:1 synchrony. But we thought it was for decades. It rotates 3 times for every 2 orbits. It just so happens that every time we sent a probe, we caught Mercury in the same point of its rotation.

Actually Jingles...!!!! Mercury was once thought to be tidally locked, but radar observations in the 1960s proved otherwise. Its orbit is 87.97 days but it rotates on its axis in 115.88 days... giving it a local "day" longer than its "year"!

Just bought the Elite Dangerous pack for PS4 after watching your clips. To infinity and beyond.......................once I've got past the training module that is.

Actually Jingles... What about synthesising more heatsinks (if you have the materials)? Also, don't you have an AFMU on your Diamondback Explorer that could repair the docking computer?

Next time you're near Colonia, visit SPOIHAAE XE-X D2-9 - the World of Death. It's a planet with an extremely eccentric orbit around a white dwarf star, and its lowest point takes it very close to the white dwarf, deep within its exclusion zone. You can actually see the disk of the white dwarf and some gravitational lensing there.

Interesting fact: if you put all the planets of the Sol system side by side, including Pluto, they wouldn't quite reach from the Earth to the moon (True! Look it up.) Two Earth-Moon distances is just a beach party without sun screen.

Hey Jingles, you should definitely go check out the planet HD 148937 3 (third planet in the HD 148937 system). It is quite the tricky one to land on to say the least, not hot nor cold nor particularly interesting when you get to the surface, but let's just say it's not hard to get down to the surface, it's just very to to actually land on ;) Good luck if you decide to go there, I had a couple of bumps trying to land there mysef... o7

Frameshift Drive malfunctions start at under 80% and you can synth heatsinks, also there is reboot and repair

We already knew, but this is great confirmation that The Mighty Jingles is not at all into getting baked. He must have had a bad time in Amsterdam, at some point. LOL

I thought it would be funny to land a cutter on the sunny side. I was promptly blown up from heat damage after landing and trying to leave. Quick tip for anyone landing on the sunny side. Dont supercruise off the planet. Make a hyperspace jump. You want take heat damage from trying to escape the star, only heat from spooling the frameshift drive.

You can map a button to ship recall , saves looking at the srv panel :)

Mercury isn't actually tidally locked. It is spinning. A day on Mercury last 58 days on Earth, and a Mercury year last 88, meaning that that you can see a double sunrise on Mercury as the planet rotates around the sun, before the planet's rotation brings it back into view.

Jingles, in the future, if you wish to slow down your FSD to minimum speed ASAP, just press your Throttle 0 key (X by default) once the Engage TImer is going as FSD can no longer be stopped during that timer

Isn’t there a planet that orbits through the jet cone of a white dwarf? That would provide us with the quality of entertainment we expect from our Gnome overlord lol.

There is a planet that has orbit super close to and inside of the cone, of a neuron star. there is a few minute window to land and get in your srv and dismiss your ship and the sam to leave
@csdn44834 жыл бұрын
Actually Jingles, Mercury is not tidally locked. It rotates once every 59 days. It orbits the sun once every 88 days. Thus, Mercury is not tidally locked (the rotation and the orbit needs to be the same for tidal locking).

My dear evil mighty gnome overlord, in your vast knowledge of the universe you must have found a reason not to mention that if you fit a refinery to your ship that you can produce heat sinks in flight.

You should go to a High Gravity world, and see if you can land on it without plunging into the surface of the planet and dying instantly.
