I hate to be the "Um Actually, Jingles" person (no I don't :P), but Mercury isn't actually tidally locked to the sun. It's rotation and orbital periods are in a 2-3 resonance. The first probe sent to fly by Mercury did 2 passes at just the right interval that both times the same side was facing the Sun, leading to the false conclusion. Further study showed the error
@logandarklighter
@logandarklighter 4 жыл бұрын
And also lead to Larry Niven's "The Coldest Place" short story which described a visit to Mercury's supposed tidally locked dark side. He wrote the story after that first series of probes had given the false data. Sent the story in to John Campbell for publishing in the sci-fi- magazine he ran at the time. But just before the issue went to print, the CORRECT data was made known. And he actually sent a message to Campbell apologizing for the error and asking if Campbell still wanted the story and if he didn't, Niven would understand and take no offense. Campbell waved it off and published it anyway. It wasn't Niven's fault he reasoned that science marched on and made the story obsolete in it's depiction of Mercury. Besides, he told Niven, he didn't always pick stories for Scientific Accuracy, but whether they were GOOD STORIES. And he considered Niven's worth publishing by that criteria. :D

@@radu1611 WOW. I never had that happen. (come on it was the auto pilot, not the game! Realism FTW!) I really thought they were invincible, like 8G planet, the autopilot was landing, from 100m up it boosted down, impacted like a fucker... But no damage 🤷‍♂️ (on a serious note tho, shouldn't you get internal damage when colliding other ships even if the shield is up? That huge kinetic energy kick must go somewhere, I assume the force field is passing it to the generator... So all the structure around the generator must be stressed over the limit when my 2000ton cutter runs into an anaconda at over 500m/s speeds?)

@@radu1611 Yeah, DO NOT trust the autopilot whenever there is ground at a higher level than you available to land :D Had issues with that twice; first time I was near the galactic core (luckily after selling my data at explorer's anchorage) in a wide canyon, autopilot decided to crash the ship into the cliff several kilometers away. Second time I had forgotten to deactivate/uninstall the docking computer in my racing iEagle, and it crashed me into the terrain next to the landing pads at Farseer Inc. I think I actually survived that one thanks to not-yet uninstalled shields.

O.K. My recommendation: don't fly there in a type 7. That thing is so *bleep*ing big that it's hard to find a spot where you can set it down. But the heat isn't that bad. A T7 has four utility hardpoints, that gives you 12 heatsinks without engineering. So just fly there normally (well, don't dwadle) and pop a heatsink whenever you start to overheat. Once you are out of supercruise close to the planet you don't get heated by the star anymore (I guess that just isn't implemented). I made it there and back using three heatsinks each. First time I got an SRV I landed on a random rocky planet and took it for a joy ride. About three minutes later I thought "Right, let's head back... where's my ship?" At the time I didn't know about the recall ship feature, so after ten minutes of driving around in a mad panic I remembered that in a Jingles video his SRV exploded and he respawned back in his ship. I then proceeded to find a large rock and repeatedly rammed into it for several minutes until my SRV destroyed itself. Then I learned that I could have just driven in a straight line until I was far enough away from where I thought the ship was and recalled it... That's a few thousand credits I'm never getting back...

I was being interdicted 3 or 4 times every time I tried to travel between them. Plus a couple times from where you drop in to either station. They're NPCs, so even in an Anaconda I can usually evade, but just having to go through all that every time. Jingles, if you haven't been to hutton orbital, you haven't played the game yet. I went there by accident when I started playing because I took a mission there, and since I've returned another time to pick up 3 tons of Hutton Mugs to release as tribute at Sag A*, Beagle point and Colonia. Maybe Evelyn's light instead in light of a recent loss of a cmdr's daughter. Either way, it's a while to fly to hutton, but it is in my opinion the perfect rite of passage for elite dangerous. flying for 1.5 hours in real time there for no real reward (yes yes except for the anaconda ofc) is exactly what ED is about. In the sandbox that this game is, where wherever you look everything is just sand in the end, you'll need to build your own sandcastle.The ability to fly there for that long for no apparent reason shows that you'll be able to forge your own story, or build your own sandcastle. One thing to check for those who are interested in buying the game: Check if the offer includes adding Horizons to all existing accounts, in which case go get the game _now_, but skip Horizons. There is enough to do in game for a month without planetary landings (which is the part you miss out on). Of course, no engineering during that month, but you might be able to get some of the engineering materials and prepare for unlocking by doing that 5 kly trip. The way recall ship works is, as soon as your SRV is a fair distance away from your ship, your ship takes off immediately. So the ONLY way you can return to your ship is to recall it. Suggestion for places to visit next: "Strong G". It's a bit of a trip, 1387 ly away from Sol, but an amusing place to land. As its name implies, it's a high gravity world. 9.77g infact (which is NOT the record highest for landables, by the way). Landing there is a fairly interesting task (as is all high g worlds) compared to normal. Even more difficult then Achenar 3 (which, if you haven't been too, is a good practice planet at 6.73g). Obviously, I'd suggest doing some minor research on ways to approach high-g landings if you do choose to go. It does have a fairly nice view, and of course, worth it for bragging rights. And if you can safely land and take off from high-g worlds, you can pretty much land anywhere. I've also been to Skardee 1 before. Been ages, but landed my conda there. If I remember right, I nearly fried her to death on take off, I completely forgot to bring heat sinks with me when I chose to go, and by the time I realized it, I was too far in to turn around. Did actually land near the terminator line, however. Fun view from there. It's always nice seeing a star take up almost the entire sky.

I have a suicide T7 transporter. Basically bugger the shields and weapons, they only take up cargo space, power and jump range. Upside however is 306 tonnes of cargo capacity.

The game loves to land mine in trespass zones rather than the flat ground beside me when I recall so was waiting for it to land in the hot zone. Horizons as a freebie is good news, makes sense as odyssey is expanding on planet landing which requires horizons. The "single" paint job is one for each ship so better than the uppity folk on steam are making it out to be, I've some ships missing the midnight black from the lifetime pass thing so a nice alternative. My first excursion in an SRV was me trying to drive the damn thing with a hotas, constantly bouncing in and out of the options to tweak things and after a few hours hating it enough to avoid driving for a month or so. These days I use a 360 controlled for the buggy and it works a charm with only downside being that the speed of the buggy means no VR due to motion sickness (trackIR is fine)

btw. Mercury isn't tidally locked to the sun. It is in a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance with the sun, because of the high eccentricity this resonace is stable. Also, fun fact: the average Venus night is hotter than a Mercury day at the equator.

You think that's a hard landing Jingles, try landing at SPOIHAAE XE-X D2-9 planet A1, it orbits 2 Ls away from a white dwarf star and wanders into its exclusion zone and jet cone. Only problem is that it's out near Colonia

Poor Jingels ! Whats that your asking for? Did you say you want the sun screen or the sun block? Just a minute . * Looks around for a minute then grabs a bottle and tosses it at Jingles * Watches as Jingles franticily starts applying the contents of said bottle vigerously too his skin. * Suddenly gets the over whelming urge for Honey BBQ. * Then accknowlages his mistake. Sorry Jingles that was a bottle of BBQ sauce.

Interestingly, Mercury is not tidally locked in a 1:1 synchrony. But we thought it was for decades. It rotates 3 times for every 2 orbits. It just so happens that every time we sent a probe, we caught Mercury in the same point of its rotation.

Actually Jingles...!!!! Mercury was once thought to be tidally locked, but radar observations in the 1960s proved otherwise. Its orbit is 87.97 days but it rotates on its axis in 115.88 days... giving it a local "day" longer than its "year"!

Next time you're near Colonia, visit SPOIHAAE XE-X D2-9 - the World of Death. It's a planet with an extremely eccentric orbit around a white dwarf star, and its lowest point takes it very close to the white dwarf, deep within its exclusion zone. You can actually see the disk of the white dwarf and some gravitational lensing there.

Interesting fact: if you put all the planets of the Sol system side by side, including Pluto, they wouldn't quite reach from the Earth to the moon (True! Look it up.) Two Earth-Moon distances is just a beach party without sun screen.

Hey Jingles, you should definitely go check out the planet HD 148937 3 (third planet in the HD 148937 system). It is quite the tricky one to land on to say the least, not hot nor cold nor particularly interesting when you get to the surface, but let's just say it's not hard to get down to the surface, it's just very to to actually land on ;) Good luck if you decide to go there, I had a couple of bumps trying to land there mysef... o7

I thought it would be funny to land a cutter on the sunny side. I was promptly blown up from heat damage after landing and trying to leave. Quick tip for anyone landing on the sunny side. Dont supercruise off the planet. Make a hyperspace jump. You want take heat damage from trying to escape the star, only heat from spooling the frameshift drive.

Mercury isn't actually tidally locked. It is spinning. A day on Mercury last 58 days on Earth, and a Mercury year last 88, meaning that that you can see a double sunrise on Mercury as the planet rotates around the sun, before the planet's rotation brings it back into view.

Actually Jingles, Mercury is not tidally locked. It rotates once every 59 days. It orbits the sun once every 88 days. Thus, Mercury is not tidally locked (the rotation and the orbit needs to be the same for tidal locking).
