ELITE OBUCH vs EVERY UNIQUE UNIT | AoE II: Definitive Edition

The Obuch is the unique unit of the Poles in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Dawn of the Dukes.
It is an infantry unit which can tear the armor from the enemy units (but not buildings) by -1/-1 (melee/pierce) per hit. The armor cannot go below 0, and units with negative armor (i.e., rams) do not have their negative armor modified; however, if, for example, melee armor has reached 0 while pierce armor has not, the latter will still be reduced by 1 each subsequent hit until it reaches 0. This is a permanent effect and is applied after the Obuch's attack has inflicted damage (i.e., the Obuch attack that lowered the unit's melee armor from, e.g., 1 to 0 will still use 1 armor to calculate Obuch's damage for the said attack).
Obuchs can be upgraded to Elite Obuchs in the Imperial Age, costing 800 food 600 gold.

Considering TKs cost 85 food and 40 gold, and Obuchs cost 55 food and 20 gold--yeah I’d expect if equal numbers then TKs would win. This should be adjusted for cost.

Samurai deal a whopping 28 damage to unique units before you take armor into account, it'd go as well as you'd expect, especially with the +33% attack speed.

As expected, the Teutonic Knights and Boyars do TOO much damage rapidly for the Obuch to be able to remove their armor in time. At least, since the effect is permanent (unless healed by a monk), they make the next fight easier.

The big thing about this unit is that they make for great meat shields, crazy high hp for infantry and cheap and because they get rid of armor it just means your ranged units are going to do even more damage. I mean, basically half the cost of teutonic knights with almost the same hp, thats crazy.

These units seem to be support units. They would compliment the Winged Hussars greatly. With Obuch tearing away the armor of units, they Winged Hussars would do much more damage in spite of a lower attack than heavy cavalry. This will be enhanced by the fact that with Lechitic Legacy, Winged Hussars do AOE damage.

Ive been playing the Jadwiga campaing today and obuch is a support unit, as someday already said here. In order to for them to be good, they must be paired with other units, and you can have a pretty insane snowball effect since it depletes both melee and pierce armor from enemies

That only means you didn't read to much books or watch movies about polish szlachta ;) Obuch was quite commonly used as a weapon. Their was even a saying "if not with a saber, then with obuch" meaning that if saber is inefective you have to use more blunt weapon. Though I have to admit I was also surprised seeing Obuch in aoe2. It's a nice surprise they used something that even most polish people forgot about.

I think they are meant to be comboed with Arbs, they are cheaper and tankier than champions, and are force multiplier for arbs, who tend to do mediocre damage to armored oponents.

Starting with only dealing a single damage (14 attack against 13 melee armour), they do one more damage each time they hit the teutonic knight, but the TKs still have insane armour, more HP and way more attack than these guys.

So from what i am seeing, the Obuch is an average unit. Good vs most infantry but poor against cavalry and archers. Correct me if im wrong, but it appears that with the armor ripping bonus, the Obuch deals more damage with each successive attack. They are definitely a support unit or need to work in conjunction with other units.

While it being meant as a support unit is absolutely true, this is NOT a accurate test. The recourses used for the Obuch is not even close to the amount used for most of these opposing units. This test uses the Equal Number Method, which is ABSOLUTLY not a accurate measure for this game. For accuracy you want Equal Resource Costs. Wait for Spirit of the Law to look into this, he'll do much better.

I think this bonus is kinda intresting in theory but hardly works in practice. Teutonic Knights have far too much attack power for the Obuchs to handle, in the time they take to reduce their armor to even the fight, they are already being killed. I think instead of it being a progressive bonus, the first hit against armored opponents should cut their armor in half, and then gain a -1 for every attack, otherwise this unit will hardly ever do its job. And against enemies with very high base health, they are basically useless. Alternatively, some of their damage should be applied regardless of armor. Either way, it's fairly obvious that they will get patched soon.

It's not really meant to be a unit you use standalone IMO. The bonus is paired well with a mix of units, preferably some Arbalests behind the line to take advantage of the lowered pierce armor of the opponent and act as a meat shield

This sort of unit made me question why even bother with armor shredding mechanic when units have lifespan of seconds in actual battle. I thought "Well i guess this is anti-teutonic knight unit" but Knights rofl stomp them with no casualties. This aint warcraft 3 where units do live longer than 3 seconds in battle where armor shredding would be badass. But Obuch seems like a really solid, supped up champion on all fronts and i can see some badass combos with arbalests.

If you are not going to balance resources I am unsure what's the point here. For instance, if we accept all resources are of equal value for simplicity's sake, there should have been 3.4 Obuch per Elephant (say 51 vs 15). As it stands, the Persion matchup was a 3825 resource army vs a 1125 one. No wonder elephants won. I appreciate the idea of pitting unique units, but everyone would be better off if such a video yielded a useful information of some sort.

This test is not necessary 100% accurate. It should take into consideration cost of producing and than setting amount of the units, from the same resources pool. As predicted Obuch loses against horse archers badly, but performs decently against other units. Teutonic nights are much more expensive and slower to build, so you can spam more Obuchs quickly and overwhelm the knights. I actually find it very good unit so far. It reminds me a bit woodsmen from MTW 2: cheap and performing very well against armoured and expensive units. Perfect trolling unit. 😁
