Great talk Stephane! I've always concentrated on the knee drive and pushing my foot down into the ground,,,, I let the back kick take care of itself.
@SafeMotions
@SafeMotions Жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, thanks for sharing 👍, pushing the foot down is so important for power. I've seen "new" techniques that preach a fully soft foot landing, which is fine for a jog. But I don't think you'll reach full potential with that...

Insightful, thanks. And, a bit off topic, I'm curious as to why so many speakers mispronounce eccentric as ecentric?!
@SafeMotions
@SafeMotions 10 ай бұрын
We (most people in the biomechanical field) pronounce ee-centric en English (I am french and pronounce it eksentric in French) simply because that's how it's been taught in university 🤣. Kidding. The mispronunciation is in maybe a purposeful way to clearly differentiate from eksentric (out of whack, there is nothing eksentric about an ee-centric contraction), just like I always pronounce abee-duction instead of abduction, to differentiate from adee-duction (adduction). At least that's how I feel. To my ears, I'm happier to hear ee-centric in biomechanics and eksentric any other time.

Always something new I’m learning from your channel bro. I hope more runners will see your videos. I might have to hire you as my “long distance” coach… get it?! Hahaha. Cause you’re too far away. You’d be a great running coach bro.

Great one Stephane. I think they can do it easy since they are 130-140 lbs. Most average size runners it is more difficult. At that size everything is scaled down in difficulty. The elite runners are very thin. The small stems makes the lifting and flexibility easier. In my son's Karate class , they have them do butt kick drills in place. I am not sure why but it must be to help with flexibility.
@SafeMotions
@SafeMotions Жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! Butt kicks are a good cardio, so I guess good warm up for Karate 😁 For those elite runners, maybe weight helps, but look at sprinters, same lower limbs form, much heavier athletes. I think mostly, they spend their career working on technique...

@@SafeMotions Stephane, that is a good point. I didn't think about sprinters. They have big legs

It's bit weird how eccentric hamstring activation happens when foot has landed and until it lifts off, leg is straightening and that should happen with concentric quadriceps activation. So does hamstring resist straightening of leg? Shouldn't reciprocal inhibition prevent muscles from working against each other? Or is it doing it's other function, moving the leg backwards? But isn't that concentric action?
@SafeMotions
@SafeMotions 11 ай бұрын
Good question. The hammies activate the most right before the landing, and right after the quads have flexed the hip already. Momentum extends the knee at that stage, not quad concentric action, unless maybe you are trying to overstride. The role of the hams there, is to slow down the knee extension, created by momentum. After that, the hams help to stabilize the body and release at toe off. Stabilization requires not just the primary action of a largest part of a muscle. It requires synergistic action of sometimes antagonists at various strengths so as to not prevent movement.

elite pro runners run a marathon at such a pace that a Sunday runner can not follow for 200 m...so how they are gonna lift their heels that high as a pro ! it's a matter of speed, when a pro warms up then his heels are as high as in a race of a Sunday runner
@SafeMotions
@SafeMotions 10 ай бұрын
Yes, agreed. Thanks for your input! I explain in the video why it happens at high speeds and what runners should focus on instead...
