This was incredible! This technology should be used in classrooms. I think most kids would be more interested in learning about history when they can get an idea of what these people looked like. book that she holds in her hands on teenage portrait is the one that she gifted to his father(Henry VIII) for birthday or somekind of holiday( book contains translations from different languages) , she was soooo intelligent, she is 13 on this painting and she already knew at least 3 languages...if not more( I dont remember all the details anymore) but sadly for Elizabeth , she was Henrys least favorite child, he left Edward and Mary a wayy bigger fortune than he left to Elizabeth and also he restored Mary to the succession but not Elizabeth, thanks to Catherine Parr he finally restored Elizabeth to succession as well....when he was already dying , Henry was just awful to Elizabeth but look at her legacy now....I think taht almost everybody knows who is Elizabeth I

Henry's mother, Elizabeth of York was 6ft tall and her father, King Edward IV was said to be around 6ft 4ins tall. I personally believe King Henry who stood around 6ft 3ins or 6ft 4 ins tall, took after his grandfather, KIng Edward IV, who was known to be affable and fair when dealings with his subjects, but became cruel and unforgiving as he aged. This was probably due to the amount of treachery he encounted, but also because many leaders become paranoid after being in power for many years.

His younger years he was fit. He started gaining weight after Anne Boleyn. So no, he didn’t spend majority of his life in shape. For his last two wives- he was an enormous boar.

@@ericbitzer5247 Back then they wore really tight bands to hold the stockings up which created poor circulation so when there was a small wound , and he went on ALOT of hunts etc, the wound could never heal. Plus he had terrible gout, poor eating habits. Much like Americans eating sugar and white flour and Coca-Cola's get diabetes which also causes poor circulation and limbs and toes rot so must be amputated.

The Anne Boleyn one is most definitely off in with ways because all of the portraits of her created in her life time were destroyed by Henry. The Elizabeth and Henry ones are very accurate later in his life.

@@MrAmerilias written records talk about their hair colors. Henry VIII was a known redhead. Elizabeth’s hair on this looked too reddish brown. She was a fiery frizzy pale-faced red headed woman. She had a cousin named Lettice who looked like her and was also a redhead.

When they had shown her portrait to Henry, he falls for her on the spot... but as he saw her first time for real in "flesh and blood" he was disappointed as hell 😂 and as we know that magical fairly tale like story didn't last that long 😅

I can promise you Elizabeth did not look like that in her older years. Due to the years of lead face makeup her skin was so bad it appeared to be melting off along with extreme aging all due to the lead paint. It was said she wore it to be almost an inch thick in later years to hide the damage done. This is what I learned in college don’t come at me please lol

There is only one reference to "bad" teeth which is by a visitor to the court who didn't get closer than 30 feet to QEI. We have ONE reference to her having a toothache (and being very worried about having the tooth pulled. There is a story that one of her courtiers offered to have a healthy tooth pulled to show her it was all ok). Though QEI had access to expensive sugar, it was still VERY VERY expensive to import and so most of the time, it was not served except to impress important visitors. QEI was known to be fairly frugal in her eating habits and tended to dine privately and simply. In terms of "makeup", there were various kinds. We haven't much in the way of references to what QEI did use. I've looked up a number of inventories we have and not much referring to the items that would be used for "makeup". We have a wealth of information on what clothing, jewellery and other things the Queen had as part of her wardrobe. Its not that she would not have used them but its not as likely she used it as much as we think. For example, modernly we "assume" she was bald, yet in 1601 when the Earl of Essex came to her rooms when she was dressing, he found her "in her hair" which was white and long. Yes, she wore wigs, but thats due to her wanting to retain a red colour and frankly trying spending hours whilst someone turns your hair into those elaborate coiffures is utterly boring (been there, done that). Its worth reading Sally Pointer's book "The Artifice of Beauty" which looks at makeup and beauty methods through history - and also recreates some of the (safer) "makeup" through time. I have used some of them which were safer. And Elizabethans knew very well that white lead was *not good* and it wasn't that popular (it was also expensive too). (College tutors may not have the up to date information and research. I researched health and hygiene in the 16th century for a lecture I gave on the topic a number of years back).

I wish that everyone notable in this period had had a portrait bust of painted wood made of them, the way Henry VII did. When you look at that piece, it's so detailed and precise that you almost expect him to speak. Sadly, most of the portraits in this period weren't the work of the greatest artists. Stefan Zweig, in his biography of Mary, Queen of Scots, commented: "Again and again, one regrets that Mary was never painted by a truly great artist. The portraits of her that have survived give no indication of the magnetic charm that this remarkable woman had."

I'd be interested in seeing how Mary Queen of Scots looks compared to Elizabeth. At least some histories I've read suggest Mary was far more attractive than Elizabeth, but your portrayal makes Elizabeth quite beautiful IMHO. Maybe they had a thing against gingers even back then.

The red hair was a strong gene in the Tudor family. Due to political expediency and Henry 8 being bat crap crazy, he said he doubted Elizabeth’s paternity. Realistically, he was the only one though. Every contemporary source said that Elizabeth was Henry’s mini me, in looks and personality. Edward and Mary, the “legitimate heirs” took after their mother’s quite a bit, but Elizabeth was all Henry.

@@leiaclark8388 I agree in many ways. I also feel like Elizabeth was more like Henry than Mary and Edward in terms of personality. When it comes to looks, Mary, Elizabeth and Edward all looked like a mix of both their parents. Mary had Henry's hair colour, Catherine's facial structure (thank god) and her fair skin and blue eyes came from both her parents. Elizabeth had Anne's facial structure and eye colour with Henry's hair colour. Elizabeth was actually said to look very very similar to Anne (face). It was her hair, charisma and personality that made her more like Henry. Edward's face looks like a mix of Henry and Jane. His fair skin, hair and eyes could have come from either of them. When Mary was a child, her hair colour was lighter like Catherine's, but when she grew older, it became a darker red, like Henry's. Some of her portraits show her with dark brown hair because some paints darken over centuries. And i also agree with you on the fact that Mary and Edward had more of their mothers' personalities than Henry's, especially Mary. She was basically Catherine's mini me, imo.

The portrait that was shown of Anne Boleyn and any other portraits of Anne weren’t created in her lifetime, when she was still alive. There were portraits but Henry destroyed them all. From historic sources she sounded like a great beauty, had brown hair, a slim appearance and most likely brown eyes. Closed to how Natalie Portman looks, or Natalie Dormer who played her in the tudors with how her features looked during the tudors. Pretty sad how people made up lies about Anne and just later her appearance like example that she had “6 fingers” those accounts are just bias and not reliable.

She got that Plantagenet blood. They were all supposed to be very good looking. Her great grandparents on her fathers side, her grandmother was the most “beautiful woman on the island”. Her GGG was a tall handsome hunk, and her grandmother Elizabeth of York was a renowned beauty herself. Heck, her father was supposed to have been “the handsomest prince in Christendom”. Those Plantagenet genes seem to have been very dominant, as you can read about how good looking they were at least back to Edward I. Even the first Plantagenet, Philip, was called “The Fair” because he was so handsome.

You've done a great job here (who knew a young Henry VIII looked like a hipster?)! I would love to see just every painting ever be brought to life the way you have here. This should be your job and you museums should pay you to create interactive opportunities for visitors to have a conversation with a full-on hologram of people from history. Think of the research into how they spoke and how their voices might have sounded but bring their language into the 21st century. We could ask what they think about anything, or what they had for breakfast that morning. I'm getting a real sense that this is how it's going to be in the near future.
