It’s important to be aware that the new section of the Elizabeth line that was purpose built with new signaling, has not broken down once. The signal failures and overhead line failures often occur on the older parts of the network, from Paddington to Reading and Stratford to Shenfield, which have existed for years, but whose local trains have just been taken over as part of the Elizabeth line. The Elizabeth line trains still use the legacy signaling on these parts of the route. Creating trains and software that could deal with three different types of signaling seamlessly, was one of the main causes of delay to the opening. Of course, the regional / intercity services run on these routes by other operators are affected too.

It's what comes with doing DfT only authorising 'half a job'. Paddington to Maidenhead (and beyond - but that was a separate project) was partly resignalled in parallel with Crossrail Core works. The resignalling was limited in scope, partly to cater for the changes to the layout for later Crossrail operation. Partly for the consequences of Crossrail services on other line users (e.g. freight and Heathrow Express) and partly to enable Network rail to introduce future cab signalling (ETCS). A lot of time. effort and money spent - yet DfT's penny pinching approach to infrastructure means numerous weak points remain as the lineside element of the signalling infrastructure re-used legacy equipment nearing 30 years of age.

I'd like to do a story comparing the Lizzy to what NY has built for LIRR access to Grand Central and how Amtrak's plans to add 8 tracks to Penn Station are the same mistake. Lizzy connects lines and people and regions of London, where NY is keeping things separate and are not seeing the ridership boom, they hoped for, and the cost far exceed the Lizzy line.
@KyrilPG
@KyrilPG Ай бұрын
The Lizzie line continued the Paris RER model (specifically line A), and thus saw massive ridership increase. Keeping things separate in NY surely creates a ridership limitation. RER A frequently carries 1.5 million people on weekdays, and it's still growing (to the point it's now overcrowded). Linking former suburban lines with a massive new deep bored express infrastructure in the central section offers great speeds and huge capacity, which are both ridership magnets.

Bit of a clickbait title!
@Smart1529
@Smart1529 Ай бұрын
I think you need to be a bit more accurate with your title unless your purpose is to clickbait people. Also that failure occurred at the GWR section (Paddington to Heathrow/Reading) a section that has existed for many decades and using older but updated signalling. The central section from Paddington to Abbey Wood is the new section with new signalling. So far no failures like this one. It's sad that a failure like this occured but don't for one moment think the Elizabeth line failed. Journey times from East to West has been cut servely including giving areas like Woolwich and Abbey Wood more appeal for transport and new homes.

It is obscene that a brand new line that costs billions gets regularly disrupted by signal failures. There needs to be accountability for this farce. The fact that there are those in the comments who are trying to justify this calamity just shows how brainless some people are. If that much public money has been spent on a line there should be ZERO days where mechanical and signal issues cause disruption.

@@extrude22 its still a failure that management should have realised at the start. But im betting businesses couldnt care less because they wanted profit. Honestly the core section should have been 4 tracks, allowing 60tph in the Paddington to LPS section. How did they expect what we have now to be enough for two stations that have 100mil passengers annually combined -_-
@extrude22
@extrude22 Ай бұрын
@@user-lp5wb2rb3v it’s noting do to with business. The entire Crossrail project was run by TFL and the department for transport. The department for transport are responsible for the lines west of Paddington and east of Stratford and they would have made the decisions on what needed upgrading.

Elizabeth line has seats that are bloody uncomfortable much worse than the underground seats
@ianmcclavin

The seats on the Thameslink trains are worse though (apart from in the First Class) they also run between Abbey Wood and Farringdon, taking twice as long, and are less frequent.
