As an American (California) visitor to London a few weeks ago (left a few days after the Queen's death), the tube was fairly quick and directions clear. The Beck map served well in showing the tube path and where to change stations. I did use other maps/google maps to help find out which station gets us to which place closest/fastest (e.g. Chinatown, Westminster, Heathrow Airport)

Some American transit networks have taken some cues from London's scale-sacrificing diagrammatic approach, like Chicago, Boston, and of all cities, Los Angeles. As a former frequent user of LA's rail transit system (which is a bit better than you might think), I've only recently noticed that I think they actually the same or a similar font as the London Tube.

After growing up in a very rural area, when I first moved to a city with a transit system and a map like that I hated it. It was annoying and gave me no idea where I physically was. But there I grew to understand it and why it is so awesome and grew to love it. Not I often still don't have any clue where I am located within the city, I just don't care because the only thing that matters is how to get between where I am/want to go and the nearest station.
