Elizabeth Taylor is underrated for how deeply she understood the art of acting for the camera. As one of the most successful classic Hollywood stars, she was funny, powerful, and capable of heart-wrenching emotion. As she matured into middle-age, she developed a kind of wild force-of-nature style of acting that was a lot of fun to watch, but still deeply moving. Here I focus on the wildness of her persona in those years, with a few early moments that show how she led up to a more freewheeling style (which I think started in earnest with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? [1966]).
