In 1976, actress Elizabeth Taylor and then-aspiring photographer Firooz Zahedi journeyed across the world to Tehran. They dined with royalty, toured ancient sites, shopped in the Grand Bazaar, and perhaps most importantly, took a series of photographs that offer beautiful glimpses of Iran before the revolution and provide an intimate portrait of a 20th-century film icon. Though never intended for public view, Andy Warhol published the photos in Interview magazine shortly after Zahedi and Taylor returned from Iran, and in 2012 they were exhibited at LACMA. Zahedi and Taylor remained close friends and he continued to photograph her throughout the rest of her life. In this episode of Expert Voices, Firooz Zahedi shares the stories behind the captivating images of Elizabeth Taylor in Iran and describes how this remarkable experience influenced his now decades-long career as a celebrated photographer. Sotheby’s will offer one of these magnificent photographs, Elizabeth Taylor Dressed as an Odalisque II, in our 20th Century Art / Middle East sale. (30 April | London)

I am glad you put that story it reminded me of my days there in Iran . I worked at the Sheraton Hotel and we all lined up to see Elizabeth Taylor walk in . I could not remember the year. But they were beautiful days of Iran, the gift stores, the beautiful Mosques and all that you showed in your pictures.

In late 1977 when I was 12 years old I flew on that flight. I will never forget the feel of it. We flew almost a mile higher than any other airline flew at the time. A lot less turbulence at that hight. Not very fuel efficient, but Iran Air was more interested in the comfort of its customers than saving a few bucks. Iran then was a different world than it is now.

Iran Air specifically ordered and special Boeing for that flight , the iconic 747SP. I flew that route from Tehran in the summer of 1976 with my mom which was actually my first flight. I remembered it as if it was yesterday.

Elizabeth Taylor was and still is the most beautiful lady I have ever seen in my life. Elizabeth didn't need surgery or other forms of plastic to make her look good; she had beauty in abundance. Something I recently found out, Elizabeth Taylor had double eyelashes; it is a condition by which a person develops a greater than normal number of eyelashes. Some people like Elizabeth Taylor are born with a second row of eyelashes due to a genetic mutation called distichiasis. I would have given anything to have met her.

Angela Bender. ~Elizabeth Taylor was pretty. With makeup applied by experts she looked out of this world. And strictly speaking, at the end of the day(literally, but not necessarily)the purpose of that beauty in a woman is to be enjoyed by the man. As in touching, the rough and tumble that is sex. And things don't have to get too raunchy and hot - makeup is very fragile. Like a painting in soft pastel, it is easily smudged. So let's get real! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWfSnWSPfb5mY9U But pastel paintings can be fixed with a fixative. Alas, makeup as applied to the face cannot be fixed.

Rupert Rosells There is no doubt that Elizabeth Taylor was a good-looking woman. Beautiful eyes with beautiful make-up applied by a beautician will, of course, look dazzling. @hamrunizspar1

steve gale red eyes = booze(?) because of stress. Yellow eyes look jaundiced. Even Elizabeth Taylor was not immune(in fact her health was known to be fragile at best). Having and living with labels such as 'the most beautiful face in the world' may sound wonderful but it is also a great responsibility. Being set up as desirable sexually is quite a burden. Very beautiful women - in Hollywood especially - are two a penny. Never having to bother about housework much creates its own problems. So are multiple marriages symptomatic. And if all this does not affect the personality, I do not know what does.
@hamrunizspar1
@hamrunizspar1 5 жыл бұрын
Steve gale. As I said, exceptional beauty brings it's own problems. Beauty without the brain matter that sustains our mental stamina isn't worth much. Ms. Taylor did some good work(but her voice was a bit whingey, like a little girl wanting attention). Hollywood manipulates and without knowing it, the manipulated collude with the system. Then age starts to set in. It's all tinsel-town stuff and sleeping at The Dorchester when not in LA. Big deal!

@rose rose FACT! Brooke Shields circa early 1980s was THE peak of physical beauty. No need for eyebrow pencils, eyeshadows, blush and all that stuff. Her natural coloring was perfect in itself, and not to mention all her facial features were perfect. She was the most beautiful of them all! And even today her beauty stands the test of time. Almost all the highest paid models and most beautiful actresses of today are compared to her (Barbara Palvin, Taylor Hill, Isabeli Fontana, Cara Delevigne, Natalia Vodanova, Lily Collins, Emilla Clarke, Natalie Portman, Kristina Pimenova and many more!). She is the standard! The best kind of beautiful, natural (surgery and even make up weren't needed!)

I have heard this so many times about her; that she was incredibly generous to a fault. She valued her friendships. She really was as vulnerable as Marilyn was, she just had more family around her. That pic of her is just so beautiful 😍 ❤

@@Linda43 Dear Linda, the massacre of 77000 Iranians by Jews in Purim took place almost 2500 years ago! The animosity of Jews with Iranians has deep historical roots. Were ancient Persians terrorists too?
@Linda43
@Linda43 5 жыл бұрын
@@Iranian.Shia-kurd The King signed a irreversible idict calling for the annihilation of the Jews. It was he who allowed the Jews to arm themselves. I know that the idea of Jews defending themselves is scary . Get used to it. Israel will always come from a position of strength. The Jewish people don't hate the Iranian people. Remember that Queen Esther was a Jewish woman. So was Elizabeth Taylor a convert to Judaism FYI. According to Jewish law so was Queen Esther's son Darius. The Iranian regime is only Persian in theory. It aspires to greatness but is destined to fade into nothingness.

my sister is a pisces and the most hateful, vindictive, exasperating, obsessive person I've ever had to deal with. She is a natural at lying and I truly believe she thinks it's true after she repeats it a time or two. . Delusional. Our whole family avoids her and if we have to be in her presence, we all lay low and breathe a sigh of relief when she's gone. She was a bad seed as a kid. I think Liz Taylor was a nice person cause that's who she was. Not because of some planet based influence. How else can you explain the contrast?
@captainpearly3994
@captainpearly3994 4 жыл бұрын
@Gayle Elizabeth we don't sigh with joy, dear. We sigh with RELIEF that we managed not say something that would make her act out and nothing got broken that day All I can say in my families' defense, after twenty years of forgiving her hateful, dishonest and harmful behavior over and over, she has burned alot of bridges. She would never think she needs help.At this point, she's over forty and other than just laying low so she doesn't feel slighted because one of us might have out done her.....you know like getting a vacation or a new grill, there isn't much we can do. Why we have not banned her altogether and why she still comes around must mean we still have some hope. Nah, truth be, we are all afraid how she would manage to destroy our reputations and ruin our lives if we did cut her off. . No one plays dirtier and after her handy work, she hasn't an ounce of remorse. She will even deny it ever happened.

I understand she is naturally beautiful and all, but could people stop shaming other who has plastic surgery? Do you guys know what it’s like growing up being bullied for your big nose or weak jawline? Not everyone is born looking like Elizabeth Taylor and some plastic surgery fixes deformities and helps people with their self esteem. I understand there’s an exaggeration today when it comes to surgery but do not shame those who had it.
@nanaopalopalka6340

I really don’t think anyone is condemning plastic surgery. There is vain and unnecessary plastic surgery and there is essential plastic surgery for those who truly need it to correct a slight to extreme deformity. There is a big difference. I Just wish more people would realize that growing old gracefully is beautiful!

I think they are referring to women who are already pretty but end up ruining their faces with too many fillers, butt injections, repeated breast augmentation, etc. Its understandable if you need a nose job or anything else aligned. I always thought my face was a twisted and could never accept a compliment. I didn't do anything about it and with time I released my self perception.
