As a 35 year veteran of elk hunting in Idaho, mostly archery I look at it as a way of life. First a good hunter needs to be in shape, one needs to be good at shooting with a good heavy FOC arrow combination with a cut on contact head. Finding elk is the key to success, knowing what type of terrain they will be in during the season. I look for remote basins, thick cover, water, feed and limited pressure. Big bulls don't tolerate pressure for very long. Most of my bulls have been taken calling, or at least calling to get a locate. Good luck and cover the miles. You will find them eventually.

Few tips... Some western states don't allow mechanicals, so I'd review THP's videos with the Ranch Fairy. Don't underestimate altitude sickness. Lay off the alcohol, drink lots of water (like more than you would back east) and get some electrolytes. Be mobile... Very mobile, which means get in shape and lose the gut. Like no joke. Your scent elimination stuff pretty much goes out the window cuz you will sweat your a$$ off hiking these mountains. It's more important to learn about the thermals and even pay attention to micro climates. You'll notice certain areas will hold onto the down draft longer than other areas. Certain areas the wind will switch earlier cuz it's exposed to the sun and etc... It all matters. But other than that, comfortable shoes are more important than expensive ones and the clothes you have for deer hunting is absolutely fine. Also... I suggest having a tarp. Tarps are so versatile and useful. Ok... That's it. And have fun... Like a lot of it. It's beautiful country out here and I think everyone should do give it a try at least once.

The first place to start is exercise, exercise, exercise. Put a guy like me that has lived his entire life just a few hundred feet above sea level at 9000 feet and you quickly realize how thin the air is and how out of shape you are. Elk eluded me in Colorado in 2012, but will eventually get back there to settle the score sometime.
@chelseazarate1893 жыл бұрын
I disagree; first place is being a competent archer. Doesn't matter how much stamina, endurance or strength you have if you can't seal the deal and make an ethical shot.
@gregb42883 жыл бұрын
Zarate has a point, a competent archer is required. Gunter, I'm a flatlander guy, I can attest to being at 0' elevation offshore most of the summer. A day later, I was in elevations and oxygen levels I've never experienced before trying to hunt, never saw it in day light until the 1st morning. I was gasping the first 2-3 days. I was 220 gym bro and not able to breathe. I took drawing a CO archery elk tag seriously this year. 1st time drawing. Since I knew, I've been stair mastering, incline treadmilling with as much weight as I can daily, running, & biking. I feel like I need all the help I can get to be as in shape as possible. Why wouldn't anyone?
@chelseazarate1893 жыл бұрын
@@gregb4288 Also a flatlander from Michigan, though more ectomorph, I did enough weight lifting to maintain my ability with my bow and shed hunting with my pack for endurance. Zero issues going from sea level to 9000-12000 ft but my brother who has a similar physique and gym experience you described, struggled intensely. Good luck this season! I drew a mule deer tag for CO as well

Elk hunting has gotten so popular in the last few years with things like OnX, goHunt, etc that the pressure is getting pretty crazy. I hunted CO in 2019 and it wasnt uncommon to pull into a trailhead with 15 vehicles parked. The thought of 'going further' then everyone doesnt work as well because that is most peoples mentality now because thats what all videos and podcasts tell you, and again with GPS people are more confident to go further and not fear getting turned around. We hunted 5 days and never saw an Elk. Thats hunting for you but the experience wasnt quite what I'd hoped with all the people around and lack of animals. This is coming from a guy in WI that is accustomed to the orange army invading the woods.
@jordanpowell2283 жыл бұрын
This couldn't be more accurate. While i appreciate the things THP, Dan, John Eberhard, and on and on, have done for the hunting community they have also brought a TON of hunting pressure and most say the same things about hunting the thickest cover etc. Everyone is mobile now, everyone has at the least a smart phone capable of looking up properties. Its changed the game.

ALSO tell people about the Rocky mountain elk foundation.... KZbin channel's like yours are recurring a ton of hunters that have never stepped foot into elk country. For those hunters I would recommend looking deep into things well before you even think you would like to try elk hunting... It's not cheap even for a DIY. I hunt elk / mule deer/ black bear in Idaho and Colorado, I live in Michigan. I have all my own gear that cost from bow to back pack 4550.00, the trip out/back in fuel 4237.98(Idaho) ,quad 5500.00, enclosed tandem trailer 7500.00, generator 1900.00,outfitter tent 2800.00, wood stove, 450.00 spike camp tent 700.00, food (12 days) 400.00. tags 850.00 elk/black bear. And about 200-300.00 for gas for gen and quad, ice and miscellaneous supplies. I could not do my trip for any less last September 2020 .... I do wish I had a little more left over cash so I could of rented llama's to pack out the two elk my hunting buddy and I got 10 miles from the quad. I wish anyone that makes it happen the best of luck... And if your lucky and get an elk down, i hope you enjoy the work of getting it back to camp.

Last year, my otc hunt was $1400 round trip; a bow that was traded to me, $200 in arrows, $80 in broadheads, $200 in a pack and that was it. It doesn't have to be outrageous, it just depends on what you're willing to endure along the way. Also from Michigan

In AB Canada I pay annually $39.95 for a resident hunting license, $29.95 for a bow permit and $34.95 for the actual general elk tag. So for just over $100 I’m hunting elk on public land. There are some rules that you have to follow and are specific to each hunting zone but if it costed me $1300 for just an elk tag I’d sell the whole lot of hunting gear and buy a butchered beef.

As someone who lives out west, I hate these videos. Last thing I want is competition from some dude from Iowa for an elk tag. But hey, gotta put out the content, right?

Right, people should stop hunting. So then I can have it all to myself, and while it loses popularity, eventually hunting will be regulated out of existence along with, on the downhill slide gear will get worse and worse because there's no demand or competition to improve gear. I hunt in Iowa and kinda see the point your making. But as long as other people are respectful of other hunters I'm glad seeing other people in the field.
