There are times when it gets frustrating but that is also when it separates the men from the boys,a good hunting partner priceless.

So good to see the realities of hunting, so often the films only show the encounters. Much more time and effort is spent chasing elk than time spent in the encounter, which is what our dreams are made of.

Our (my hunting partners and myself) key to perpetual positivity revolves around defining “success.” (I’ve heard Corey and Randy talk about this too) Although we study, shoot, and plan everyday of the year for our elk hunt, we are careful to define success exclusive of harvesting an elk. As long as we are able to spend the allotted time chasing elk in beautiful country, applying our best strategies from what we’ve learned, pushing each other out of our comfort zones and sometimes to our limits, and everyone gets to go back to their families safe and sound, the hunt has been a success! Our mantra when things are quiet is “he’s probably just over that next ridge!” It always gets laugh and shake of the head. Then we take a collective deep breath, hitch our packs into more comfortable positions, and press on as a unit. Such is the way of this public land, archery elk hunting team 🏹

Wake up Early with high expectations To bed late with high frustrations Choosing a Unit not chosen by most Not high on elk count but close to the coast Old growth, thick growth, picturesque as can be 1000 miles from nowhere But there’s no place They’d rather be A good friend, a best friend to keep Corey moving Not a bull down, some say they losing Fret not...They won’t get stuck in their sorrow They will press on..... for there’s always tomorrow

Once again you guys are adding fuel to the fire and displaying the extreme work ethic and passion it takes to chase these magnificent creatures.

The best motivation for me when I feel like I can’t make it to the next ridge, or I’m not seeing elk and I want to turn back is I think to myself I bet Corey and the Elk101 guys would go to the next ridge. Then if I have service I watch a quick clip of you guys, and that gives me all the motivation I need to keep pushing. Love the series so far guys great job!!

This was a day that I have had many times. What keeps me going is my son who is 42 years old. He keeps my 66 year old body hopeful for the next day. Sure hope the last day is outstanding. My so and I have gotten lucky on the last day. He has gotten 2 elk to my 0 but I love being out there. Thanks. Les

Took me 5 yrs, 100s of mi,1000s of feet of elevation to finally get my first shooting opportunity on an elk. I was fortunate enough to make the shot at 9yrds but that was five yrs of education both with rifle and bow. Going from midwestern complete novice to actual success solo...at least in the woods. If it wasn't for you and the rest of the crew providing good information it probably would have been more than 5 yrs. work pays off. Each yr I got closer to shot opportunities and kept a journal of each day so I could learn from my mistakes. Just keep at it is all I can say.

I've struggled even after the morning hunt, just a lot of things going on with weather coming in, pressure, not seeing anything, it's all about the people I'm with for me and making the most of the situation moving around camp or just driving doing some glassing and checking out a couple areas and hiking in those areas. I couldn't help but laugh when Donnie was getting bit, I have done the same thing and didn't know what was going on at first, gotta laugh at situations like that, it's what makes the memories and stories. Thanks guys for the hard work and letting us share these moments with you.

This year was my first year elk hunting.. the first day and a half we didn’t see or hear a single bull. Then on day two, I called in 4 bulls.. 2 were at the same time! We bugled back and forth for like 30 minutes and I got a headache from bugling so much (I drank my 3L Platypus by 2 pm that day). It’s crazy the elk activity from one day to the next! Never give up and always press on!!

i coached High School Football for the last 11 yrs. so I’ve been a weekend warrior. This year I stepped away from football to chaise bugles in September. I was able to spend 12 days in the Central Oregon woods and loved every minute of it. I hunted with my Farher in law the guy who got me hooked on calling in elk. Great hunting partner and the chance to hear that Growling-Screaming-Raking monster Bull is what keeps me going hard when times are rough.

This series is all the fuel I need to convince myself to get up at 4:30 a.m. to hike a half mile in the dark 6° out. To wait at a spot hoping the elk cross the side of private land instead of tribal land. Not a lot of hiking but definitely an early morning wake-up, 30 mile drive, 1/2 mile pitch black cold hike, 45 minute freezing wait for a 5 minutes of cross your fingers luck. Got to love elk hunting with a bow! Amen!

I can't tell you the number of times I have been right on the edge of just throwing my bow down and walking out of the woods to head home and watch football. But then I collect my thoughts and say to myself "it's time to bear down and persist" and a very high percentage of the time something really exciting happens and I at least have a lasting memory of an experience that most people will never have or a freezer full of meat. On the other hand, 100% of the times that I threw in the towel all I had to show for it was a frustrating day of taking my bow for a walk in the woods, so fight off the urge to quit and "BEAR DOWN".

Last year I had a rough year. My wife and I spent lots of time scouting a new area, got to know everything we could and we had the first part of the season to ourselves. Half way through it seemed like the secret was out and there were all sorts of people that moved into the area pushing all the animals out. It was so frustrating to me but my wife kept telling me it would all work out. We kept hunting and had some good chances but couldnt connect. Even though I didnt fill my tag, it was one of the most memorable hunts for me because my wife was right there beside me the entire time and we had some amazing experience together out in the hills! Thanks guys!

Anyone that has done much elk hunting has been where you guys were. And I must admit I’ve thrown in the towel once or twice, usually when hunting solo. That’s why a good hunting partner is so vital. My persistence is the healing I get from being on the mountain. It's hard to keep pushing sometimes when things aren't going your way but, I'm truly out there to reconnect to nature....being on the mountains or in the woods helps to refocus my energy and teaches me to have humility...also hunting is usually one of the few times I get to spend with my brother so just being together makes it all worth it!!! I have to be honest to the fact that I’ve throw in the towel before buck hunting and then slept in the next morning! But usually I have a ton of drive like you guys and the thing I try to remember is that I’m out in the wilderness hunting and seeing nature. And there’s lots and lots of people who don’t care or don’t get the chance to get out and do what we all love to do and that is to hunt and be one with nature. And to try and keep those skills going that have been passed down from generation to generation. And if I’m totally honest it keeps me going so I can get that chance to TASTE A TASTY WILD STEAK FROM THE ANIMAL IM HUNTING!!! Haha great job guys Corey and Donnie. Like how honest and down to earth you two are! Keep up the great work guys you guys rock!!!!!!

Appreciate you guys showing the low moments. I know it may not always seem like the most entertaining elk video, but this is a reality that everyone needs to see. And the lows are not always (or usually) followed by the highs, but they are just as often followed by more discouragement if the elk aren't talking. Thanks for keeping it authentic.

Being from Oregon the unit I hunt is right at the transition of the tall dark timber and desert oaks and sagebrush. We have tracked a number of herds throughout the year and had them pinpointed to the exact areas they would be and to the exact hour they would be there while making their looping pattern.....until opening day. The elk vanish every year as if the Purge alarm is sounded. We found the elk were strictly nocturnal, so for 8 days we hunted where we knew the elk were, following fresh tracks every morning hoping to stumble across an elk in the wrong place at the wrong time. We stuck to the thinner more visible oaks knowing the elk were going into dark timber and over the rim rocks into canyons long before first light. On day 9 we decided to head into the canyon and make a last ditch effort to flush them out of the Day beds. We found them in the deepest, darkest, nastiest canyon around. It’s hard to stay positive knowing the elk are an hour ahead of you. The drive to keep pressing on knowing the elk have likely already made their nightly routine before we were out of bed can be a killer to your mood. My fiancé and hunting partner was the one telling me anything can change at any second, but I guarantee we won’t kill anything from camp. Great partners and positive attitudes can change the world around to your morale. “Just one minute is all it takes”

Persistence is key. I hunted solo this year for 10 days and it was tough after blown stalks, missing the biggest bull I've ever had a chance at, passing on lots of smaller bulls and lots of hiking and elevation gain and loss. Man we are enjoying all the fun every night as a family so keep at it guys! I also hunt elk archery and the frustration is well shared. Has always kept us in elk even if its a cow as some of the areas are any elk so if September doesn't work for a bull the late season is first elk in the bow sights!! Amen.

Day 6: the elk were few and the ants were plenty. Nice shuffle Donnie! I say you chase the bull at last light.

When my hunts haven't gone as I had hoped, my 5 year old son is always at home waiting to hear every detail and encouraging me to keep trying because he believes in me. I look forward to the opportunity to take my son hunting and pass on everything I've learned. The successes make the struggles well worth it.

Great vid guys. The grind is real. I’m usually solo except for last year and it’s hard to keep a good attitude when you’re not seeing or hearing anything. You just buckle down and give her hell! I appreciate this series and learning a lot. Appreciate you guys.

My hunting buddy and I do a very good job in supporting each other when one gets down. I wouldn't be near as strong to get through those tough hunts alone! Great video! Looking forward to your Wyoming hunt!

I hunt alone about 80% of the time and it really gets tough not to give up the last couple of days of a tough hunt and just go home. It sure helps to have a partner or two whereas you can pick up the spirits of each other and keep the hunt going. You guys are never going to quit until last shooting light of the last day. Good episode--keep 'em coming!!

For me watching the struggles you are having is a confidence builder as I am reminded that everyone who hunts elk with a bow will struggle. Thanks for showing us all the ups and downs you had in western oregon.

Hardest thing I have found about elk hunting is exactly what you guys talked about today.. Thanks for reminding me about the keys to perseverance..part of it is the feeling we think we have " failed" if we haven't punched our tag..I find my self taking Donnie's approach.. enjoying the beauty of our public lands, committing to the plan at hand, and totally being present in the moment..that's all you really got!

Another great episode guys! Persistence always pays off in anything that you do! For me, having buddies around and getting to see some awesome country is the big win and what drew me into hunting last year. I have been a big time saltwater/off shore fisherman since I was young and I can't believe it took me up until I was 37 to expand my hunting ranges to the land part of earth. I already had an amazing encounter during the only day in early eastern Washington archery that I was able to hunt... 10 foot stare down with a huge stinky 6x6 for 45 seconds, He had come out into a meadow at 30 yds and closed right to me! The only issue is that I didn't have a bull tag in my pocket. If I wasn't all in before, now I'm ruined for life! This is me patiently waiting for next friday to get up the mountain for late season... I can't wait to spend the week in elk country!

I think the last day of the hunt is just as important as the first day. I always loved the last day and usually took the last 30 minutes or so to reflect on y experiences and just sat there and watched the sun set. its peaceful

I love this video series on your Oregon Roosevelt elk hunting trip. You guys are getting a taste of what I've been going through for almost 20years and have yet to seal the deal on a bull elk. It is a major love hate relationship with bowhunting in general but especially with roosevelt elk.

Keep up the good work guys. It's hard getting after day after day. Especially when you're still holding your tag. Living in town makes it a lot easier for me to get out into the woods lol.
