Oh man, this is the most gorgeous version of “Summertime” I’ve ever heard. LOUIE (Louis) Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald are both musical icons in their own rights, but hearing these two together singing “Summertime” is absolutely magical. Thank you for locating this version, and for Sharing it with us all❣️

I feel blessed to grow up during the 50's listening to Louie Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, and many, many more. I was very young, under 10, but these entertainers made a big impact on me. My parents were older when I was born so I was introduced to music from the 20's-40's as a kid and love that I was. Music changed drastically in the 60' & 70's which I also loved cause by then I was a young teen on into early twenties. Loved the blues, rock 'n roll, & hard rock; but I never did forget about the entertainers I first watched on early TV in the 50's. Music is an education and the musicians, thru their music, if you listen, will educated you about the society of the time they are singing in.

The whole Porgy n Bess album is superb and, like this, lushly orchestrated! You hit the nail on the head about both of them. Ella indeed had the voice of an Angel. At one time the top swing bands including Benny Goodman n Duke Ellington were in a, then, unheard of bidding war for her. She was so humble with a wide range and her scatting was out of this world. No one better. She could improvise and become the instruments in the band. On this album, my favorite beside Summertime is I Love You Porgy and the small, tooooo short hidden gem Doctor Jesus!! For me, my top 4 American female singers are Ella, Judy, Aretha and Barbra.

Hi. Ella and Satchmo recorded, among other things, an album of the songs from Porgy and Bess in 1957 from which this is taken. It's as good as you can imagine. In 1976 Two of the legends of the next generation, Ray Charles and Cleo Laine, did the same thing. They moved from this version's Blues influences to Soul Jazz. It would be a question of personal taste to decide which one you prefer but I'm grateful that I have both and so I don't have to choose.

Louis Armstrong was discovered in a strange way. He began as a singer and trumpet player on a paddle wheeler going up and down the river, which on a guess would be the Mississippi. One evening, a band leader heard a powerful trumpet ringing out into the darkness, while his band was performing onshore. It was Louis Armstrong. The band leader was stunned by the sound. He was determined to see who was playing the trumpet that night as the boat slid by. After several inquiries He managed to meet Louis Armstrong face to face. He said "I heard you playing last night. I felt like your trumpet was talking to me." He promised Louis Armstrong that he would find him a better job with another band. That was the start of a life long journey to wealth and fame for Louis Armstrong. Armstrong also played the Coronet, which I think he preferred. By his peers, who admired him, he was known as "Satchmo."

You are touching greatness here.. Both Ella and Louis are mentioned in Stevie Wonder's song "Sir Duke" which is a reference to Duke Ellington. Louis "Satchmo: Armstrong is, in my 'umble estimation, the single most important American musician who has ever livec. He would influence every musician, every songwriter and every arranger who came after him. Satchmo was the greatest cornet/trumpet player that I have ever heard blow a horn, hands down. But his lasting legacy is his skill at arrangements. He literally wrote the book on how music itself would be thought of forevermore. One of the best examples of this is his recoding of W.C. Handy's classic "West End Blues". Recorded in the mid 1920's it features a nineteen year old Earl Hines on piano and stands as one of the most important and influential records ever made. Anything by Ella and Louis is worthy of your attention. They were "that good". I'm going to go in a slightly different direction here and suggest that you check out a couple of songs made famous by Duke Ellington and Count Basie "Cotton Tail" - Duke Ellington wrote it. Count Basie coverec it. "One O'clock Jump" - Written and originally recorded by Count Basie The particular versions of these songs I think you would most enjoy are from a project the last Neil Peart dod with the Buddy Rich Big Band. Neil played drums for these two songs from the "Burning For Buddy" sessions.

They used to have to pull down their shades and keep the lights down at night for fear that they're buildings would be seen from above and get bombed! It blows my mind when you hear what they went through.

This is beautiful music from another time . It deserves to be heard now. You should try listening to a young singer bringing some of these classic songs into the present. She sang Summertime in the final of Norways Got Talent 2014. Her name is Angelina Jordan and you are likely to hear her name more frequently as she signed with Republic records last year. In my opinion one of the most talented female vocalists of her time and a genuinely beautiful soul with a unique ability to convey emotion in song.

Ella Fitzgerald was truly incredible, and hearing her backed by Louis Armstrong and a full orchestra is truly special. She started as the lead singer for the Chick Webb Big Band (Chick Webb, another great, albeit overlooked, drummer, and band leader), and her solo career was equally amazing. We are very luck to be blessed with a similar living talent now in the form of Cecile McLorin Salvant. She has many similarities in her voice quality, range, and control. I hope you'll find time to react to something from her. Regardless, keep the jazz coming; there is far too little of it in the reaction video world.

Yes, Louis Armstrong played some trumpet. Like Babe Ruth played some baseball. There are recordings from 1920s and 30s, when he was at the center of the creation of Jazz, the recordings may be a little rough, but you can tell his band was playing real hot jazz, a very new thing at the time. Janis Joplin had a psycheldelic version of this song that is classic 1960s. Louis Armstrong, late in life in the 1960s, had a monster hit called "Hello Dolly" that is a lot of fun. As for segregation, even as late at the 1950s, watching video of Chuck Berry or Little Richard, its usually in front of an all white audience, sad. Thanks for playing this.
