In my humble opinion, Ella's rendition of this jazz classic hasn't been touched and is still the touchstone for upcoming female vocalist.

One of the all time great recordings by anyone in any genre. The singer, the arrangement, the band, the melody, the lyrics-all magnificent beyond words.

A masterpiece indeed. Nobody sings this song like The First Lady of Song, born 100 years ago today.

Lionel Hampton was very much alive at the time. Why not Mr Riddle?

Thanks for giving some background on this tune. Johnny Mercer. Wow, I gotta say, I can't imagine anyone these days writing such luscious lyrics.

Thanks for uploading this. That picture of Dizzy Gillespie looking at her like he was a smitten schoolboy says it all. Sing the song, make me smile, teach me something. The greatest jazz musicians were always listening for new ideas, and Ella was not only perfect in phrasing and tone, she is a giant of jazz improvisation. They only need one name. Louis. Benny. Dizzy. Bird. Billie. Frank. Sarah. Tony. Nat. Miles. Thelonious. Ella.

Saw him at one of his last public appearances in Cincinnati in 1991. He definitely lost some of his chops but was still great.
