Originally saw PBS snippet of Ella singing Midnight Sun on Andy's show. Mesmerized by Ella's performance and searched diligently for this clip over several years. This performance is TOO special. I knew it had to show up on KZbin - eventually. Thanks so much -rom a true Ella fan.

The PBS documentary featured her performance of Lover Man on Andy's show, not this one.... I can see how one could confuse the two - the set is similar, Nelson Riddle is responsible for both arrangements, and they were filmed within a few months of eachother.

Man oh man, she was musically Sinatra's true equal in music and success, and I would argue.. even better! I think people forget how sublime Ella was in her younger years. My goodness, she just oozes pure class and beauty in all of vocal music truly......more than any other singer I am aware of for that time and even beyond. The purity of voice and message and utter bliss wrapped up in an elegant presentation. I mean she hits those notes straight on and extends that natural and beautiful vibrato. I can listen and watch her all day. . .

All delivery and no real felt engagement. Too self conscious and self enamored of her delivery not the message. The song is inappropriate for a female. so a guy has ruby lips. It's another case of a quick bebop tune slowed down with lugbubrious lyrics pasted on.
