I'm 55 and don't recall hearing this cool tune before. It was playing at breakfast yesterday at the hotel I'm staying at. I was just down at the reception today to get some ice, and it was playing again. Of course I had to search for "Paper Moon" on YT. Damn it, it's actually legendary Ella Fitzgerald singing !! Had no idea, shame on me. I love her little improvisations between the male backround choir repeating the verses. Anyhows, this is now one of my favourite songs.

I came here because a character Ai Jade Leech said that when he was in his younger days and he felt really down, this song cheered him up.

1:14 are they singing in 4ths or 5ths or something else? Does anybody know what exactly makes that kind of sound?

the magic of close harmonies! they sing an almost dissonant harmony, try having one person in your group resolve a dissonant harmony

What he said. In particular, the first chord is just a major triad (on the word "only"). "on-" is a B major triad but on "-ly", they raise the root note up a half step to lead into the D minor triad on "paper moon". all of the voicings are very closed which gives it that distinct barbershop sound.
