My mom saw Ella live sometime in the late 80’s/early 90’s when she was in college. To this day she has still said that Ella was one of the best live performers she had ever seen. And true, yes, her singing voice had somewhat faded over time (which is to be expected), but it was still quite good.

She was swinging the whole time but about 30 seconds or so into it, you could tell old Ella had kicked in, her voice got instantly younger. I respect her talent so much.

I'm glad she stayed away from cigarettes. Her voice is still clear as a bell as it was in her youth. Love this.

dreamboynyc2, she had diabetes and ended up having both her legs amputated below the knee a few years after this. Diabetes also affected her eyes, she went blind. She ended up dying from diabetic complications in 1996.

You can definitely tell she admired Boswell on her early recordings.

You ugys I have a different take on this..#1 the bass player is really pedantic and not familiar with the tempo this song is at..so 2. She had to adapt to his not right way of playing the tempo is really not right and then Piano comes in by which time she has it by the 2nd measure and her voice is as always great buyt these players RUSHED THE TUNE and were like TESTING TO SEE IF SHE COULD KEEP UP ...so rude Ella was great ..gotta differ with you although know all young people like to point a finger at older experts and say they are too old..otherwise how else can they take their place without character assasination..snidely whiplash

You are a joke. Are you trying to sound so knowledgeable. All this stuff about the 2nd measure etc. Let’s just enjoy Miss Ella and the band, a beautiful experience and leave all the technical stuff to people like you who obviously understand it all, and just let us mere mortals enjoy the moment.

Not that this isn't amazing, but her vibrato isn't as good as it was in her prime.. just cause of her age?

+Miles McKinley More because of her health, she had a number of issues in her later years and it had an impact. Her phrasing, timing and overall musicianship was still great tho

I totally agree. I love her at all ages. But her music of the 40s 50s and 60s are the best in the world! When I am listening to them I am carried away to a special place I have never seen or experienced in my life!
