Ella Fitzgerald & the Tee Carson trio - Summertime (from Porgy and Bess, by George Gershwin).
Tee Carson, piano; Keter Betts, bass; Joe Harris, drums.
The first lady of song in Berlin, 1968.
Beautiful mother singing a lullaby to her baby.
Summertime lyrics
Songwriters: George & Ira Gershwin, Du Bose & Dorothy Heyward
Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high
Oh, Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
Don't you cry
One of these mornings
You're going to rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings
And you'll take to the sky
But 'til that morning
There's a'nothing can harm you
With your daddy and mammy
Standing by
Don't you cry

Susan Mclaren Can you not appreciate both? Can you not appreciate every aspect that goes into good music? Can you not appreciate pure craftsmanship whilst still acknowledging how the people around them are incredible as well? Check yourself girl; lotsa good stuff goin on here-putting any of it aside for no real reason is regrettable, to say the least.

Susan Mclaren I absolutely appreciate Ella and all that she had to go through just to get her name and beautiful voice out there-hell, that’s why I’m here. But, do you know the drummer? If not, why do you speak on his behalf? And even in the scenario which you’ve presented, are you unable to like something that’s well done, regardless of the performer’s background? To understand and appreciate the hard work that goes into performing any kind of art at such high skill level? Why is it so unfathomable to like *both?* That’s an option! You can like multiple things in a song at once! In fact, at times, _that’s what makes the song so good._ You don’t have to pick and choose what you enjoy based upon meaningless criteria; if you like and appreciate something or multiple things, you like and appreciate them. End of story.

No one is talking because they are too busy listening! All these musicians, including Ella Fitzgerald, were very well known for their artistry at the time, but it’s 2023, and this was done in maybe c.1970, which is 50 years ago, and she performed it in probably the mid to late ‘50 and throughout the 60’s, so you are talking about 70 plus years of absolute perfection.

She was simply the best woman that sang jazz or any other kind of music - one of the most loved by fans across the world. Able to improvise with her voice like a bebop horn player, Fitzgerald was also a silky balladeer who was able to balance technique with sensitivity. 1:11 [uDiscoverMusic]

Ella Fitzgerald is the first name you think of when someone mentions outstanding female jazz singers. Dubbed ‘The First Lady of Song,’ Fitzgerald had an extensive career that ran into the late 80s, earning 13 Grammy Awards, and setting the standard for future jazz artists. She is known for her flawless diction, her silky tone, and her incredible ability to improvise using her scatting skills. [Pink Wafer Club] 1:48

Her control over her own instrument was phenomenal. Her long-held notes were unwavering. Her diminuendo was breathtaking. She just stood there and made it look effortless. Plus her tone is very beautifully intimate. As someone who listens to classical music & opera, technique is very important to me, and Ms. Fitzgerald certainly had loads of them.

I’d never heard of Ella Fitzgerald before. I just read a post on twitter saying no one would book this woman to sing in clubs bc she was black but Marilyn Monroe offered to come to a nightclub every night and sit in the front row if they let her sing. Using her privilege for good. I hear you Ella. I’ve never heard you sing until now but hearing you for the first time feels like I have before in a past life. Wow.

Of all the musical moments I've ever heard in my life, this is BY FAR one of the most powerful. There's Judy Garland singing "Over The Rainbow" at the Palace in 1952. There's Sarah Vaughan singing "Here's That Rainy Day" in 1988. There's Billie Holiday singing "Strange Fruit" in 1959. And there's Ella Fitzgerald singing "Summertime" in 1968. To me, these are untouchable moments in music.

Agreed, completely. If this is how you feel, you will appreciate Ella's live performance of "How High the Moon" in Berlin - I forget the year, but will edit to add. I have only heard and never seen the performance, but critics the world over still bow down before the mastery she demonstrated through that one song. Sarah Vaughn refers to the performance in her cover of the same song: "Ella Fitzgerald sings this song, Real, real, real crazy Shabadoobadoobedobedobe That's the way she sings it So I'm gonna try to sing it that way for you, So-o-o-o here goes, here goes How High the Moon" You will thank me.

She was a legend for the simple reason that she absolutely earned and deserved it. Her range, perfect pitch, control, and impeccable taste in finding the right expression put her in the company of only a select few singers of all time. Because this song was based on the Ukrainian folk lullaby "Ой ходить сон коло вікон". While in his own description, Gershwin did not use any previously composed spirituals in his opera, Summertime is often considered an adaptation of the African American spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child", which ended the play version of Porgy.[9][11][12] Alternatively, the song has been proposed as an amalgamation of that spiritual and the Ukrainian Yiddish lullaby Pipi-pipipee.[13] The Ukrainian-Canadian composer and singer Alexis Kochan has suggested that some part of Gershwin's inspiration may have come from having heard the Ukrainian lullaby "Oi Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon" ("A Dream Passes by the Windows") at a New York City performance by Alexander Koshetz's Ukrainian National Chorus in 1929 (or 1926).[14]

When they played the music they had loved and grown up with I realized not all parents had the same good taste in music. Let's just say I appreciated the music my folk's turned me onto even more.

Ella was simply the best. I love the moment when she belts out "One of these mornings..." and Tee Carson looks up from his piano in surprise then in absolute admiration. This version is my favorite version of "Summertime" because it captures a humid, hazy day perfectly.

Nick Giandelia you said a mouthful nick. She was such a true master of the art of singing. My folks worshiped her when I was younger and we grew up listening to her but never realized how amazing she was. My little brother and I thought her name was Elephants Jello when we were just learning how to talk. Our folks used to chuckle at that. Now I’m introducing her music to my late 30’s daughters as an example of how good singing can be with out computers sweeting the sounds. They are appreciative of her genius now.

My father sang this to me as a child. Ella Fitzgerald. What can one say? I sat with an 80 year old welsh friend last year, an old friend of jazz singer Annie Ross who had known many singers over the years. As a teenager he’d travelled from Swansea in Wales to London to see Louis Armstrong, and later gave me his signed copy of Louis Armstrong’s autobiography. He’d known many songwriters and musicians over the years. He’d also seen many great performers sing live. We sat watching a documentary about Ella Fitzgerald. As it finished he said, with tears in his eyes, “At the end of the day she was the greatest of them all.” That’s how I feel when I hear this. Ella. An exceptional talent. A beautiful spirit. A gifted sacred songbird. Reminds me of my father’s smile as he sang to me. Ella always gets to the heart of the song. She always makes you hear the song for the first time. That’s how I feel.

Sublime! It was, when I first heard it as a 12 year old white kid growing up in the north west of England in the 1950's, and it sure is now all these years later. Ella's voice enthralled me then, and it still does now. I was not alone. Many of my friends had that same enthusiasm for the African-American singers' and their music at that time - they touched your soul like no other white singers' could. Like liquid chocolate, the words came off their lips, filled with a musical resonance born from social injustice - although, I did not know that at the time - as a young boy, I was purely taken by such wonderful music sung in such a beautiful way - thank you Ella, may you rest in peace.

I have been in love with her voice, her songs, her lyrics for as long as i can remember. My Caucasian friends feel the same way too, including my Irish husband. We simply love her. "her" bodies? Perhaps a Freudian slip showing you actually don't care to see modern singers as separate people and would rather group them under an easy-to-understand, reductive perception as a single pejorative entity? Sure, it's simpler to just tell yourself things used to be better. As if you had to put the past in contradiction to the present. Couldn't you enjoy both?

Что такое счастье, я понял, когда в 1966 году купил в ГДР гигантский виниловый диск со стереозаписями песен Эллы. И слушая его сейчас, я наслаждаюсь и радуюсь, как и 54 года назад (! Mamma Mia !!! ). Хотя сейчас мне немного грустно оттого, что её давно нет с нами. Мне нравится её пение, потому что она открывает нам свою душу, «по душам» неторопливо и задушевно говорит с нами или взрывается бешеным темпом песни. Великая певица !!! What happiness is, I realized when in 1966 I bought a giant vinyl disc with stereo recordings of Ella's songs in the GDR. And listening to it now, I enjoy and rejoice, like 54 years ago (! Mamma Mia !!!). Although now I am a little sad that she has not been with us for a long time. I like her singing, because she opens her soul to us, “heart to heart” slowly and sincerely speaks to us or explodes with the frantic tempo of the song. Great singer !!!
