EllaOne: What Is It And How Does It Work as a Morning After Pill? With Dr Daniel Atkinson

EllaOne is a morning after pill that helps prevent pregnancy in an emergency. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what it is and how it works.
You’ll need to take EllaOne within five days of having unprotected sex for it to work. It’s more effective the sooner you take it after having unprotected sex. EllaOne works by delaying (or stopping) ovulation, which means an egg isn’t released to be fertilised. It delays ovulation long enough for any sperm that have entered the cervix to die, which can take up to five days. EllaOne is a one-use only emergency contraception - it won’t stop you getting pregnant for any further unprotected sex.
