My Audio-Technica CN5625AL cartridge kept backwards skipping on some rougher records, and I knew it must have had something to do with the antiskating, so I referred to your video for help. I followed your instructions carefully, and I'm happy to report my skipping woes are over! Thank you so much Jon for the help!

I would like to thank you for helping me setup my tonearm, it is something I did not know how to do before, or even thought about it, your very smart and it is easy now, I had thought it was hard to do. I have more then one turntable. One is from england, transcriptors, I guess the instructions is for more/most tonearms, I guess?. Thanks so much. I like your vids.

For just plain listening this is important if you want the right sound. A stereo record have right and left channel on each side of the inner walls of the groove. The centrifugal force pulls the stylus in to the center of the record. This means there will be more force on one of the walls so you get more sound from one speaker. To fix this, the horizontal counter force must be set to equalize the centrifugal force vs. down force. When this is equalized you get correct sound from both speakers.

This theory, that a tone arm should be motionless on a groove-less spinning disc is absolutely incorrect according to a phonograph technician I spoke with at length. Actually doing as this theory advocates can cause irreparable damage to the record and stylus. Actually, Anti-Skate is supposed to add a very small (slight) amount of outward force (toward the edge of record) DEFINITELY NOT CAUSING THE TONEARM TO BE MOTIONLESS. With the proper amount of Anti-Skate applied, the TONEARM will still move toward the center of the groove-less disc but at a slightly slower rate of speed compared to the slightly faster inward speed of TONEARM movement if no Anti-Skate was applied.

Yo mate, the anti skating should be set at the same value as you have your counter weight set at. So if you are tracking at 3grams you set the anti skating at 3.

What if the anti-skate adj doesnt correct the arm moving outwards? My sl1200 wich I've dusted off, moves the tonearm outwards when I balance the arm in the air (counterwright set to when the tonearm cart is balanced horizontally in air). When I let go of the arm it moves outward with antiskate at zero. Moving antiskate a notch wont improve... Thanks.

Managed to get my left 1210 setup correctly for anti-skating to the needle doesnt move on the blank record (had to turn it to 3), however I cant get the right deck to do the same, even on 3 it still moves slowly from middle to end but quite slowly, Im guessing theres nothing I can do as the anti skating is maxed out unless someone can give me any other tips. Both decks are sat flat on a Sefour Deck Stand. Anybody got any ideas?

Couldn't you work there same way as with riding pitch finding the correct spot. While the needle is on the record and record is spinning you notice it drives to one direction while this happens turn the skating so you eventually get it to stay still?

And my collection consists of about 1700 records. Some by artists such as... Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Dj Sneak, Cajmere, Plastikman, Ian Pooley and so on. I'd rather die than loose all these amazing records. So if you know any way in which i can get my height adjustment to move again. It would be much appreciated man.

I just do it by ear with a normal record, you can clearly hear it if you have half an ear. Try it. It might be different for 45 rpm.

That shouldn't be happening. Readjust your vertical tracking force (weight) to what is recommended by your cartridge manufacturer, and then make sure your turntable is PERFECTLY LEVEL. Now try adjusting your anti-skate again.
@pr4gm416 жыл бұрын
...and for DJ's I guess it is extra important since they scratch the record back and forth, so with no equalizing of weight and forces, the stylus skates all over the place... I tried to reply to Dwaas88, but that didn't work :P

Agreed. Also, look at the way q-bert basically FORCED that counterweight into position like that, in his video. That poor Technics :( (: Anyone who turns a counterweight, points to the scale and says "I don't even know what the hell that does", and then proceeds to turn the counterweight the wrong way around, has no business setting up turntables.
@luki83ld12 жыл бұрын
I forgot to say that it happened on both decks
@johnviera38844 жыл бұрын
I think he forgot to instruct you to back off the weight at the rear of the tonearm. When I have the correct tracking force set the needle will always drop straight down onto the record no matter what the anti-skate is set to.
@oldskoolhead09 жыл бұрын
i assume if you put it anywhere on the record it should stay in the same place because i have 1 deck that if you put it at near the start or finish it moves back to the center of the record and if you turn the anti skate it moves back to the start but never moves to the finish, i did change the tone arm on 1 deck so maybe its this one, any fixes for this?

Antiskate should only be used for playback or recording purposes. I have found that If your scratching and cuing the needle tends to jump out of the groove with antiskate on.

I get really paranoid when i use my Technics 1210 mk2's. i know if your anti scating and shit isn't set properly, it can damage vinyl. This is a problem for me as i have a hyper hyper rare collection of old house and techno. On one of my turntables, the height adjustment is stuck on the highest it can go. It literally won't budge at all. Can it damage my record if it is that high up. ? this is a huge worry for me as i'm only 16 and don't have the cash to replace this expensive shit.
@SuperNickid4 жыл бұрын
@Sub Fuzion: it depend on your perception, If you don't care about sound quality then it will be just fine, and they are a lot of missinformation out in the internet, that to mush tracking force will damage the grove of your record faster, and that his not truth, unless it his way over exagerated weight, someone on KZbin did a test, and did on puprose to go way over the max out amount to see what a damage grove sound like, the music still plays on a damage grove, the sound quality goes down, by having more surface sound.
@SuperNickid4 жыл бұрын
@Sub fuzion: also if you have a collection that you want to play, then you play them ,because no one actually knows how long the quality last, because people can claim on thing, and the other person can claim another thing, even if they end-up doing the same thing to their record, because even testing it scientificly would not work, because diffrent record as diffrent quality runing time, and sometimes it can be the tourntable itself that start to play in bad quality, for example: this his just an example it did not happen to someone, but it could happen to someone. here his the example: the Record player itself his old, and the user does not relize the bad sound quality his from the Record player, and it his a bad sound quality so he thinks it his the Vinyl so he snap the Vinyl in half and toss it in the trash, he go and buy a new copy, that his in good condition, and plays it on his Record player, bad sound quality, so he relize, that he snap his old Vinyl for nothing, because it was the record player, not the Vinyl Record.

AS can never be reliably set with a groove less record! Think about it: the forces on the cantilever are not the same on a record with no grooves!
@Fluterra7 жыл бұрын
By ear. You start with zero anti-skate. Play a short clip, preferably with a female voice that rises in tone. Listen for her voice as it rises - it should move from one speaker to the other... which is not what you want. Increase AS slightly, then play it again. When the voice is fixed between the speakers and does not waver, you have it set correctly. This is how the experts do it (e.g., Helmut Brinkmann, Fremer, and many others).
@hudsonja6 жыл бұрын
This might be me being a dick, but isn't adding "I" to the end if a word meant to imply plurality? How many, styli, or "needles", or "styluses" are on your turntable? If more than one, that's why your records may sound strange.. :/
