Hi! I realized as I was uploading this video that I forgot a very important one - the threat pose. Soooo, if your blue tongue skink opens their mouth at you, exposing their tongue, they are warning you to back off. In the wild, showing off that blue tongue shows predators that they are dangerous, as bright colors in the wild often mean poison. That is all. Have a wonderful Sunday. 💙

Sorry to be a nerd. But it is believed that since there aren’t many poisonous blue animals or plants for the bluey’s to mimic (at least here in Australia) it wouldn’t be effective as a defense mechanism, so scientists have theorised their blue tongues actually behave like a flashbang. As some birds that eat them see in infrared or UV light (or something like that), so the constant flashing of the tongue makes sense as it keeps on trying to blind you with their tongue

I'm a new BTS mom and I've noticed that my skink only seems to sneeze when she is starting to feel stressed. I deliberately made sure to get substrate that didn't have fine particles that could get into her nose, and after she sneezed a lot on her first day, she hasn't sneezed much at all since except when she starts to display other stress indicators after being handled for awhile (like becoming more restless and looking for an escape). So I have reason to think that it may be a natural stress expression for Blue Tongues, as well as a response to substrate getting stuck up their noses. Taking time to slowly socialize and providing better substrate helps immensely!

Another thing that can be done to raise the humidity if one is having difficulty doing so would be to place the heat source above (if a lamp is being used for example) the water source; evaporation causes humidity :)

My blue tongue skink is an interesting little one. She's at a point where she responds to her name and doesn't mind being taken out half the time but mine loves to try and gain control over me by climbing all the way to the center of my back since she knows I can't get her there 😂 I think Blue Tongue Skinks can sometimes have object permanence, from my experience my gf has noticed that whenever my skink sees me leave the room and close the door, my skink would just freak out in my direction like "what?!". I also think their vision isn't so great since they tend to get derpy when eating food, like they'll see a worm Infront of them, then try to bite it as they do a complete turn and then get confused lol. God I love Skinks!
@ellesreptiles2 жыл бұрын
Skinks are so awesome! And yea, we recently had to temporarily move his tank to another room, and he spent the entire day pacing the front glass, trying to see his new surroundings. They're so fascinating. 😍

BTS auntie here, my skink is an Indonesian (suspected hybrid of two diff breeds, one being Halmahera), and he gets quite opinionated.. he'll huff if you touch him without him realizing you were there, but he makes these sort of excited huffs once you pick him up, and then he snuggles on you for hours.. also, if he doesn't want to be held anymore, he'll just pretend like he's gonna poop. Not sure if the excited huffing means anything, but if he really didn't want to be held, he wouldn't just sit there and let us pick him up like a hotdog, right?

I got a halmahera a few months ago- She was super active throughout the day. Then I went on vacation for 2 weeks, had a pet sitter, and since I’ve been back my little friend has been hiding in her burrow basically all day every day. Is this concerning? She’s about to shed too! Her normal colors are back and I was actually looking around the tank for the shed! Thanks for the insight on that.
@ellesreptiles2 жыл бұрын
She's probably fine. Many tend to hide more when they're getting ready to shed. She should be back to her normal, active self when she's all done shedding 😊

I was really starting to worry about the sneezing. I'd seen so much about respiratory infections, and I just got a fogger (for my Indonesian, so he needs more humidity) and I kept worrying that something was wrong but I didn't know what. I don't know if that feeling will ever leave tbh, but I have yet to see a vet.
