How to handle a Blue-tongue lizard: Beginner Guide for first time Bluey owners!

Have you just got your first Blue-tongue lizard, but have no idea how to handle it?
Well this video is for you. Shannon and the rest of the Reptile Way scaly crew, will walk you through how to handle a Blue-tongue lizard. They will demonstrate how to pick it up out of the enclosure as well as more complex handling, such as bathing.

Ah yes, I've handled a few blue tongues in my time, they're a bit like a stray cat: They're wary of you, but if you can get close enough without scaring them off, they may let you touch them.

Very Informative as my Cat was about to pounce on a Blue Tongue but I stopped him and quickly the Blue Tongue went back under the fence to next door then I placed some bricks in the gap. I was going to pick the Blue Tongue up but did not know how or where so if it happens next time I can with confidence thanks to your Video but I doubt it will be that relaxed as your Blue Tongue. 🙀☮️💟🇦🇺

I actually have a pet blue tounge lizard, can you explain to me why it keeps opening its mouth at me and trying to bite me?

This is normal Blue-tongue lizard behaviour. When they feel slightly threatened, for example mistaking you for a predator, they will hiss, open mouth wide, stick tongue out and try to bite. To try tame your Blue-tongue lizard, You can try feed it in your presence. Use feeding tongs and get yummy food and encourage it to chase it around the enclosure. You can gradually increase handling time and regularity of handling and this assists to tame them down a bit. But all Blue-tongue lizards have different personalities. At the end of the day some will always be a bit sassier than others 🤣 Another way to assist with temperament is to reduce stress by having enough hides, substrate deep enough to dig and hide in. But again, there is no need to worry, this is normal behaviour.
