Lexi Love During the time of the British Royal Baby (Prince George in 2013 (I think it was 2013), two australian journos from a radio station called the hospital the Duchess of Cambridge was staying at and prank called a nurse who ended up giving them information she wasn't meant to give. Even though she was never disciplined or fired the resulting pressure of having being broadcasted out to hundreds if not thousands of people, to it's toll and she committed suicide not long after. That's why they won't do it. Because if you prank call someone who has no idea and is a member of the public, on national television, if things go wrong it can be very hard on the person who was called, lawsuits could be involved and in general it's just a bad idea.

But I've seen many American talk shows prank ordinary people on the streets that didn't know they are being pranked and get away with it. Ellen even pranks her audience on a regular basis and they never know when its coming. Nobody sues them as long as they weren't physically harmed they get away with it here. I mean I guess they have to get their permission to show it on air, but not always they just block out the people's faces and still prank them anyway. Still it was nice of Ellen to just let the lady off the hook, because the prank was meant to be for Chris anyway not her and Chris didn't know about it either and they were still going to do it to him. I think what happened in Great Britain with that nurse is tragic and sad, but I don't think the same rules apply in America. We have entire shows about pranking people like America's Funniest Home videos, Punked and JackAss they get away with way worst things done to people on those shows without their knowledge all the time. Though they may pay them off to avoid bad publicity if necessary, if they were to be sued, but shows like this have insurance and specific laws in place to protect them from lawsuits over pranks they pull on unsuspecting people as long as they don't go to far.
