Is Avatar worth watching in 4DX in 2022? Was it worth watching in 2009? Ellen's just seen Avatar for the first time ever, so incredibly these are the questions we're wrangling with on this week's Show of the Weekend.

What do you mean you last thought about Avatar in 2009, Luke? You forced Andy to watch it during lockdown, and that's how you fell down the rabbit hole of Disney Channel Original Movies with him, eventually producing a stellar podcast to salvage something from the experience.

"I tire of your human ways. Blublublublublub." - James Cameron, 2022 Fun fact: phlebotinum, the actual trope name for a sci fi macguffin substance, sounds less made up than "unobtainium", which had to have been a placeholder. Except generally when you keep a placeholder in the finished product, it's because the placeholder is *good*. Anyway if anyone needs me, I'll be in the Angry Dome.

to be fair Avatars was literally designed to be watched in IMAX(James Cameron literally helped develop new 3d filmng cameras to do this) watcihing it in 4dx is like looking at it thorugh caterax while a kid behind you shakes your chair kickes you in the back and a kid in front sprays you in the face with a plant mister.
@AbsolXGuardian
@AbsolXGuardian Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's all about watching something designed for the medium. 4d works great in theme parks and meusums. But also I can't imagine such a thing lasting the length of a full feature film. That's just too much. The only 3D and IMAX movies I've watched have been the documentaries they show at the California Science center. They work great, the technology has really improved over the years and the fact the films air in a theater specifically designed for them, makes it work.

To me Avatar felt a lot like an extremely long FMV intro for a Final Fantasy game, except they forgot to include the playable parts once the intro ends. It looks amazing (assuming you see it in IMAX), it sounds amazing, it feels extremely video gamey (I actually played the game and probably enjoyed that more than the movie).

I remember watching a film that looked like an extremely long FMV once, but it had a little bit of interactivity to it, probably some new function of BLU-RAY disc that the PS3 supported, that let you interact with parts of the movie. I watched Avatar when it first came out and I though the 3D was okay. Maybe not as good as How To Train Your Dragon. But it was fine and the visuals were pretty. But the chief thing I remember was, after ten minutes, figuring out the entire plot from beginning to end and then just ticking off each thing in my mind as it came up. It had one of the most cliched and predictable stories I'd ever seen! I also never figured out how it was so successful. Star Wars had people queuing around the block, watching the film and then queuing up again. But I honestly don't know anyone who watched Avatar twice. I didn't hate it, not like Independence Day: Resurgence (don't get me started). I just watched it and was fine never to watch it again. That's that off my chest after 12 years.

My most jarring memory of watching Avatar in 3D was a scene when two people in the foreground were having a conversation, and then there was a focus shift to the background. In 2D movies, that helps to shift the viewer's attention. In 3D, it felt like you had sudden uncontrollable eye damage, unless your centre of vision exactly followed the focal plane as it shifted. Something that should have been evident if Cameron had spent a fraction of the budget on actually experimenting and learning how to use 3D. But alas, he's the master of turning massive budgets into (lucrative) trash. And yes, that goes for Titanic and Aliens as well. He could have spent a fraction of the budget on hiring script writers as well. Or competent actors other than Weaver. But nope. Special effects and explosions. And hair tentacles.

I remember when I went to see this in the original Avatar in 3d with my mother. I thought of what might be good and bad about 3d and was proven right while watching. Real 3D Theatre already exists, you can go to a theater production with live actors! We are faking 3D for movies with two flat images. It may eventually be a massive upgrade similar to plays just where actors appear to be in the room with you, and have more immersive scenes. 3D film isn't there yet. Much of what we see can not only be blurry but have double vision and while you can mimic that you might also screw it up because we are faking 3D. Having jungle leaves etc. in the foreground that don't focus properly if you try to look at them because the camera is focused on the characters can be disorienting. It really helps to let the film direct your eyes(if you can tell where it wants you too look anyway). There is real potential for vertigo when you try to give an audience an accurate detailed birds eye view of any scene. As for the theatre making more active seats trying to turn the movie into a carnival ride, yeah even back in the days of "Kentucky Fried Movie" there were good jokes of theaters going too far trying to immerse you into a film. . . While the film is much like Dances with Wolves in space, there is some good sci fi and the literal connection to nature this alien world has is pretty cool. I hope the sequel has better story direction because it did seem creating this fancy tech for making alien faces respond to actors became too much of their focus. Aliens was the first ever sequel to gross more money than it's predecessor(it was titled Aliens instead of Alien 2 because of the belief moviegoers disliked sequels). This proves Cameron can do good follow up work so no pressure!

I saw Avatar, 13 years ago like a normal person, in both 3d and in a normal cinema. It looks amazing without 3d. The plot, dialogue and most of the acting is abysmal. However the world building is astonishing. Someone, I'm willing to bet serious money it was not Cameron, did a lot of thinking about how things work on Pandora and it shows. I'll go see Way of Water in a no effects cinema to see more of that, I'll ignore whatever ridiculous plot Jim Cameron has come up with.

The most memorable part of watching Avatar was I helped my mother make deep fried mashed potato balls to eat during the movie. We called "elbow magnets" since I accidentally knocked one off the plate with my elbow. They were good. Some of the designs were kind of cool. Not the six legged panther thing, but some of the other designs.

The best thing to ever come out of 4DX was when my daughter went to watch Doctor Strange 2 in 4DX with her girlfriend, she told me about the seat movement, and the water spray and the smell releases for all the different dimention jumps. I joked and asked her what the lesbian dimention smelled like. "Lynx Africa" I thought I was gonna die.

The thing that stuck in my head from watching Avatar was: that's how tall Hagrid should have been…albeit three times as wide ;-)

Listen, we've all had fun here ragging on Avatar but I genuinely think it's good for the film industry that old Jim Cameron can make these wild blockbusters, which look super unique compared to most modern blockbusters, revolutionise film tech, change how big films are made, then fuck of for 13 years till he's ready to do it again. 10/10 Pro move, we love to see it

I've been saying for a while now that people ragging on avatar regardless of wether or not they liked it are just trying to score points or something. Movies for me are about fantasy and escapism and Avatar does that beautifully, is it as good as other movies that do that such as LOTR? no definitely not but its still a great film and I'm looking forward to the sequel. I also wish show of the weekend would go back to its original format. these episodes have not been as enjoyable for me.

This just reminds me that I haven't seen Avatar. I was given a pirate VHS of it (VHS still existed in 1999, ask your mum and dad what it was) and it caused the VHS player to start emitting smoke. It was a cool visual effect but maybe not as good as the ones in the movie.

My random Avatar anecdote is that my school went on a trip to see the weird CG Christmas Carol in 3D, and the cinema accidentally showed the first few minutes of Avatar before correcting their mistake. And this was a few weeks before the release date so I technically saw it early (or at least part of it) 😂 But otherwise, yeah, not a great film lol

Avatar is a fairy tale, that's it. Visually stunning for its time, and schematically simplistic in some other ways. I loved it a lot. This suss talk was very entertaining nevertheless :D
