I bought some gouache colours some weeks ago to celebrate that I passed my law exam. This is something I really enjoyed, and even if watercolour has been my go to, I have now found a new love (, the only struggle I had was making the brush strokes, because my kitten thought the brushes were her new play things). / Scandinavian

Gouache Rocks! It makes it so much easier than having to mask like daisies flowers in a dark background you can just paint on the daisies are the lighter color flowers without having to go through all that masking process gouache is amazing I just love the actual depth of the color it's just amazing and so much fun to work with❤

@@ellencrimitrent I can do lots of lines, but have trouble painting loose leaves. I tried to paint an apple tree and painting each leaf took forever! Could you consider a tutorial on how to suggest shapes/ or a technique that means you don't have to do that, I guess a more illustrative style? 🙏 I also have trouble with leaf shapes and petal shapes, although your sunflowers tutorial was awesome in that sense.

I like gouache! Would love to see more tutorials in this medium, especially for acheiving gradients. I'd like to know how illustrators used to manage those delicate oil-like gradients in places like women's cheeks and skies.

A values scale is useful, one can make them, or download them, or buy them for a few dollars. About 10 shades would be good. When painting that can be too many for certain tasks, but it is great for studies. With black and white paint, learn to match all the shades. Then get some good subjects in black and white and do studies. In art schools people will often spend months to several years using black and white before they are ever let loose on colors. Few people who are painting for fun will want to do that for fun, unless charcoal is their medium. But even a little work of the sort is very valuable. Those delicate gradients you refer to are difficult. One instructor referred to them as the most difficult and something he would bring out in second and third year classes. Prior to that one has to work in B&W in his system, or easier color exercises.
@HondoTrailside
@HondoTrailside 2 жыл бұрын
One may wish to switch from watercolor paper, which is certainly used with gouache, to illustration board which is the support that the illustrators you refer to may have more commonly used.
@HondoTrailside
@HondoTrailside 2 жыл бұрын
Gouache does darken when it dries, maybe a full value, so that is something one can learn from exercises.

@doninis1354
@doninis1354 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it last a long time, becouse you don't need much paint and they are highly pigmentet. An even when they are dryed in the tube, you can cut them open and use it. A friend of mine just found the gouache of her mother she left the world ten years ago. The colors were fin and she painted a stunning picture with in honor of her mother.
@teebee9735
@teebee9735 2 жыл бұрын
You can try the Himi gouache it's inexpensive and you get lots, or Arteza or Marie's both have inexpensive gouache. Just know that the pigment may not be quite as vibrant as the one she's using. I quite like the Himi; I even let it dry out completely and rehydrated it just to see what kind of results I would get. It worked just fine! I bought Arteza for refilling the Himi cups, if I ever run out that is!

SO glad I found you and this video, Ellen. Fun and fascinating to watch your flowerscape take shape. I'm a frustrated watercolor newbie, contemplating what seem like the high quality, very reasonably priced Turner Acryla Gouache sets. Wondering if I'm just avoiding one learning curve to land with another very similar one. However...something about Gouache feels more fun, more suited to happy accidents and experimentation. Invite anyone to share their experiences....

So glad you're putting this up on KZbin. I'm just discovering gouache now after shifting towards watercolour from a bunch of other mediums including drawing, printmedia and acrylics. I'm very happy to move away from acrylics but watercolour is not enough on its own for this girl. I definitely need more versatility in the media I use in order to keep my work free and creative. I love all the layers and possibilities with gouache added to watercolour and frankly I just don't give a rats ass what the watercolour purists on KZbin are saying because I consider myself to be a contemporary artist, not a traditionalist. So a fusion of media and influences is exactly the recipe for me! 🙏😊💙

Have you tried Holbein Acrylic Gouache? I was trained with gouache as an illustrator. I discovered Holbein Acrylic Gouache about 5 years ago. You can layer this paint without pulling up colors underneath. I love the consistency of these paints. You can layer them light on dark colors or dark on light colors. They dry with a flat finish.
