Why am I not surprised that when I decide to search a beginner video for gouache yours is the best one I find….you just help me so much! I’m starting with the winsor Newton gouache to see if I like this as much as watercolor…I knew I needed separate brushes for gouache versus watercolor. Everything I read said no it’s ok use your watercolor brushes….I knew in my heart that was wrong! Thanks for saving my watercolor brushes!

I like your style of painting very much. If you buy the Holbein gouache paint directly from Amazon.jp (Japan). It is not so expensive. 18 colors of 5ml is about 30 US dollars. The same for Holbein watercolor paint.

I also use black gouache as a substitute for ink because when it dries its dark and free from any shine you might get from other inks.

Regarding gouache prices, you can do okay with the Holbein gouache if you steer clear of the cadmiums and cobalts, which are expensive in every line. Online stores like MerriArtist have decent prices and sales if you sign up for their email. I chose a series of tubes for a split primary color palette (2 blues, 2 reds and 2 yellows) plus black, white, phthalo green and burnt umber for about $60. You have to be careful with Holbein because they have quite a number of fugitive colors and they overstate the light-fastness. Don't buy the sets if you want to avoid the fugitive pigments. The violets are the worst. But the basics are good. Love your work. So fun to watch you produce such incredible paintings so quickly. Thanks.

On impulse (blame COVID) I ordered a cheap set of gouache. I intended to return it, but two weeks later it is still there in its unopened box. I am going to give it a try, and if I like it, I will begin to buy nice quality tubes a bit at a time. Thanks for the demo. Your sketch is lovely.

This is my first video, I always love seeing gouache and watercolor videos. There is a gouache that I love but I dont see it very often. Davinci makes a nice gouache and you can buy it direct from their website. Most of all they have 37 mil tubes which last for ever. (Or so it seems) Thanks for the video, I need to try the hot press paper, which I have a little.

Thanks for this great info! And the ‘heads up’ on being aware gouache can wear out the brushes faster, than watercolor pigment! I got a few colors to just play with, indeed they are pricey! Yikes I bought 7 colors, no paper or brushes it was $90. 😮 I have been very curious for a while, I thought it might be fun to use these along with the watercolor paints, as a final darks or lights to finish. I played yesterday, only to find the pigment wants to just sit and not blend, using 140 lb Arches paper. I will try some hot press paper or some less textured paper and see what happens! Thanks so much for this demo Ellen, you always give us such useful information!

Ellen.....thank you so much for this gouache tutorial. I purchased some Holbein a couple of years ago, but haven’t tried it yet. Guess I was too afraid of messing my painting up...lol...it’s only a piece of paper, that can be turned over and ....another surface to paint on! I’ve watched others on KZbin paint with gouache but no one explained it like you just did. Now I feel more confident in trying it. I paint everyday....it’s my happy place, and at this time we all need to find our happy place. I so look forward to your tutorials....you make my day. Again, thank you my painting friend ❤️. Hi Ellen!!! I love love this!!! Thank you sooo much for this tutorial! I started with acrylics and used those about a year and half… then I found watercolor and fell in love with the water color.. Never considered watercolor, as I thought it was just a kid art…. I love water color… but my biggest miss was using whit for highlights. And also brights…. I did buy a kit of gauche and yet haven’t had a clue how to use it!! You just helped me and now I can’t wait to use it alone and with water color, as accent. Thank you for explaining gouache and how to use it - I am a beginner to watercolor, and now I see there is this gouache that can be used in a similar way to watercolor - I enjoyed watching you and listening to what you had to say about this - As for me buying gouache, I probably would go with the basic colors, red, blue, yellow, white, and black, and mix them as I go along to create new colors to try, and then if I like this, I can purchase additional colors in the future.
