Such a culturally specific topic. It's like the main girl from Squid Game. She was cast bc in Korea she has a very masculine/harsh face while in the US everyone thinks she's so beautiful and sweet looking. Same with many many other facial types across cultures. As an afro-latina I always find it so interesting (but also annoying) how differently my "essence" is perceived based on who is viewing me.

I think the US likes her for the same reason. That she’s masculine/boyish, harsh, and that’s what makes her beautiful to a lot of people and she can be all that and cute too. She’s rather androgynous, model-esque, which makes so many fascinated by her. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone describing her as sweet looking, unless if they’re talking about the actress’s real life personality

@@Freezientmaybe her body but no… a western eye wouldn’t see a round face, small head and flat profile as masculine or harsh. such an interesting video! I think something to point out about Zendaya is she's always playing teenagers- and she has been forever now which makes me think people have really latched onto her ingenue essence- and if olivia culpo or anya taylor joy tried playing a teenager we wouldn't believe it. it makes me think Zendaya plays up the dramatic/natural side with red carpets/street style so she looks a little older and people remember she's not actually still 16

I think her height gives it away though. Shes incredibly tall, and sometimes the definition in her legs gives it away that she’s a full grown adult and has already finished puberty. So I see why she’s often styled wearing short and baggy clothes as Rue-it hides the “adultness” of her body. She’s always had a bit of a baby face that can be matured with harsh contour too. I feel like when she played Marie in Malcolm and Marie, her being her exact age felt a lot more believable, especially given that when she’s in clothes more “revealing” for her age, it doesn’t appear out of place for her to wear them. And there’s much less ways she has to compensate to look the age of the character she’s playing when the character is her age. Especially the way she carries herself. It doesn’t feel like she’s too young to wear more revealing clothes even if it is for Rue.

This makes SO MUCH SENSE. I am loving the 60-30-10 rule, since i thought a 'mix' always meant equal parts. I am predominately a classic essence since less is more for me. However I did the face line exercise and found a strong undercurrent of ingenue, which surprised me since I felt I could never pull off cutesy/girly things. Putting it into the 60% Classic and 30% ingenue instead of 50/50 makes so much sense now. I've always gotten comments that people are 'surprised' at my age and chosen occupation despite me trying to look as professional as possible. The very structured and tailored look of 'professional work wear' really clashed with my face. I'm still working on cultivating that professional look/effect, but your videos have helped tremendously. Your work is incredible and has helped me find my style and myself. Thanks for all the good work you do Ellie :)

To incorporate Ingenue into professional office wear is a challenge, but you can have so much fun once you get the hang of it! Assuming you already have a lot of Classic (if i understood your post correctly) makes it much easier. Try to wear overall classic lines, very easy for office wear - pencil skirts, straight pants (maybe a slight bootcut even), plain colours within your season...basically less "fussiness" and detailing, the better. Closer to your face, bring out the Ingenue. (I also am a mix of Classic, Romantic and a bit of Ingenue so this is what i do!) For instance, a flowy blouse (not baggy) in a lightweight material with a soft sheen - like chiffon or silk (not very shiny, that would be more Romantic and probably overkill for work lol) works much better than a crisp button down shirt in a stiffer fabric. No need to go overboard with ruffles and puffs! Or, you can switch up a pencil skirt for an A-line, but pairing it with a more structured (not stiff) top will balance it out and keep the look professional. Culottes can also be a great alternative to the classic pant, if your dress code isn't *too* strict (i mean the more structured ones, not harem pant type). A darker neutral colour like black, navy, charcoal or coffee brown (no prints!) will keep things professional and you can add a short blazer on top to make it even more formal if you wish. Also, as a general rule cardigans are better for layering than boxy blazers, just nothing too baggy or slouchy (which is more Natural essence). Hope these help 😃

I'm a Soft Classic (well mostly, I also have traces of Romantic and Natural apparently, details in these lines are good for me as long as I stay in Classic lines) with an Ingenue/Classic essence and I dress in 1900s style, I think it's very suitable for a Classic/Ingenue mix! It has the clean lines with the waistline, but it's easy to work around it to adapt it to one's essence: dramatic essence can go for strong colours and the fashionable stripes of the period, while Ingenue can go for the laces of lingerie blouses... As a Soft Classic/Ingenue with an Autumn palette, I tend to keep it simple with my 1900s skirts having mostly neutral colours (except that suit that's Sunflower yellow and fantastic, but yellow is my main colour and I can wear it in many variations), think brown/moss green/sand/mustard/even a luminous grey. I associate it with feminine but simple blouses, matching belts, and on top I usually wear traditional Japanese jackets - haori vests - that are usually matching with the outfit either by contrast or by colour combination (for example a grey skirt with a powdery pink blouse and a deep plum haori that has soft pink floral details and a linen belt with burgundy red embroidery; or a moss green skirt with a golden blouse, a brown linen belt matching my brown boots and bag, and a haori with patterns that are forest green/olive/rust red/golden; or a brown skirt with a long matching brown ribbon as the belt, a dark sand/amber blouse with a square neck and brown embroideries worn on top of a simple white blouse, a earthy haori with muted red/yellow/brown; the aforementioned Sunflower yellow suit contrasted with a baby blue blouse that has floral lace details at the neck/sleeves/around the buttons, with a warm plum haori that has small baby blue patterns...) . The colour mixes and details keep the outfits cute and youthful and feminine, but the historical style and its elegant S-shape silhouette also helps play on the timelessness that is a very Classic trait. It's super comfortable as well!

Many people argue that Anya Taylor-Joy looked better as a brunette but her essence analysis shows why she is drawn to blonde. Long baby blonde hair is the epitome of ethereal and gamine. It highlights her youthful looks and gives her edge, quirkiness, and elvish vibe whereas brunette made her look more natural and classic which is not her.

I think the reason people say she looked better as a brunette is because that period of time was before Anya changed her face with plastic surgery and lost so much weight. If you see her in her early movies like Thoroughbreds or The Witch, she’s still ethereal and striking but she doesn’t look that weird. The plastic surgery and weight loss really added so much dramatic to her face.

I prefer her look before these drastic changes.

I think that the most important part of essences is the overall vibe your features create, so when you break up the features into individual parts I think it's easy to miss the mark. Your essence is created by how your features play together to create an effect, so isolating the features can give you the wrong results. Zendaya for example I could never see playing an ingenue type character who is sweet and innocent, while some of her features on their own are ingenue the way they play with her dramatic features makes for a more mischievous or sassy look like gamine.

I LOVE that you are spreading awareness about the Kitchener system!! IMHO it’s the most comprehensive and accurate system for understanding your lines, essences, colours and style suggestions. Slight correction… Kitchener didn’t add Ingenue and Ethereal to Kibbe’s system - he actually pre-dates Kibbe’s system. McJimsey was the one to incorporate Ingenue. Kitchener later added Ethereal to her system, and Kibbe chose to omit both when developing his. As a very dominantly Ethereal essence, with secondary Ingenue, I couldn’t find my place in Kibbe’s system. It left only Romantic, which was very hit-and-miss. It is the only option Kibbe offers for all-yin women, but I lack the womanliness/sexiness that Romantics are iconic for. The style recommendations were also helpful only 50% of the time. The demarcation of a belt at the waist for me is ALL kinds of wrong. Cropped lines are wrong too (compared with Ethereal’s very elongated lines!). Pinks and reds and medium-to-large floral prints also wrong. I get drowned out. The super pale colours of the Ethereal palette and the watercolour prints or delicately abstract flowers with lots of detail work better. I find Kibbe an easy place to begin, if you want to do a self-analysis. Once you have a general sense, moving onto Kitchener is far more thorough IMHO. And if opting for a professional consultation (I’ve had both done), I find Kibbe unnecessary. Kitchener tells you all of that and more. Including a personalised colour palette specifically for you. I aspire to become a Kitchener PSC consultant - right now just gathering knowledge and confidence in what to look for! Thank you so much for sharing all your videos, Ellie-Jean 💝🙏 It’s really helpful to see what others are looking for, and how it all comes together in an outfit! 😇😘

I thought of myself as D/C/R!! Now I get it thanks to this video! It's the combination of Yang and yin that could seem "blunt" at first but when you look closely it's Yang Dramatic and Yin Romantic that are combined in a small space, the face. I used to follow the "Truth is Beauty" blog which is where i first started deep diving into body types and beauty. It is such a great starting point for anyone to learn from basics. One thing i like about how TIB explains Ingenue, Romantic and Ethereal essences - all 3 are Yin dominant, but Ingenue is the Girl (sweet, pretty), Romantic is the Woman (sexy, seductive) and Ethereal is the Wise Woman (otherwordly, mysterious). I wouldn't put Selena Gomez as the epitome of R beauty. R essence to me is Kate Wnslet or Beyonce (lush, soft and womanly features). Laura Linney would be I (youthful but in a sweet rather than mischievous way, which would be more of Gamine) and Cate Blanchett would be E (strangely captivating, impossible to define).

IMO as an ingenue it is probably the most frustrating essence to have as dominant, especially when you are no longer young. Those of us who have it know how annoying it is to be eternally associated with what is probably the most reviled demographic in all of western culture, the tween girl. So yeah. It's not an essence you want to lean into too much once you are an adult, but you can't ignore it either or you look even younger--like a little girl playing dress up. For me it always helped to go to my other essences to pull out the adult aspects and then add ingenue elements--the easiest way to do this is with light or soft colours, which matches most ingenues' own colouring (that's part of what makes an ingenue, the child colouring). The softer colours can bring the ingenue vibe without being childish, but allow you to follow the lines of the other essences.

I found myself loving the idea of kibbe. i always loved exactly the people with my look its crazy interesting how it plays out in life. Cocoa Styling makes great Content for more darker skin shades. Love it.

Just reminding you about this video Ellie. Not only did you say you enjoyed making it, but everyone could tell you were enjoying yourself too. I think you're a bit on a roll right now with all your style roots content, but an idea might be to bring in your style roots to this face/body essence/kibbe content if you need a break or whatever. This isn't a video request or anything, just wanted to remind you of a video you seemed to be excited about and also performed well.

Thank you so much, Ellie-Jean. Thanks to your videos and presentation of Kitchener essence theory and your own style roots theory, I am finally figuring out how to work with my face and body. Even at 45, it’s not too late to find yourself! I know my essences are classic and then ethereal, but I’m sure I have at least a third one in the mix. It’s not ingenue, even though I tend to look very youthful for my age. Is there a test or activity to help hone in on minor essence traits? Or does a person just have to dress with styles to reflect different essences until finding one that seems most suitable?

I hope it's okay if I say it, but the makeup you're wearing in the video looks so much better on you than the otherwise very eye-catching eye shadow. I think it's because of your classy essence, where a lot of things can look a bit too much. You look really very very pretty in this video ❤.
@local_tomatillo Жыл бұрын
Thank you! It's been helpful for me to think of these things separately too, though I'm still learning how to combine them in a way that makes sense: I've a soft gamine body with a classic/romantic/ingenue face.

Thank you so much for this video! Originally I was wondering if I had any other influences because I could only really see ingenue but when I tried the line drawing I could see I have 1 natural, 2 ethereal, and because I don't know if I have a romantic or ingenue forehead, 2 or 1 romantic, and 5 or 6 ingenue. I can really see why I could only see a lot of ingenue.

Honestly, the most important thing when talking about this is not confusing race with personality, witch... is litterally so annoying. You Cannot trust other people's opinion of you if you look very "typical" for your race bc they Will pigeon hole you into the wrong essense.

This was always confusing to me so thank you for this video. From this video (and my terrible drawing) I figured my face is a mix of some features Olivia and Zendaya have. For example, I have strong nose and face shape of Zendaya but lush lips, size of face, brows and eyes Olivia has. So what I figured is I'm some combination of romantic, classic and ingenue at smallest percentage. I got ingenue when you were talking about Zendaya and how she looks so young and sweet in light pink and that is totally me and I don't like that side of me so I don't play into it when I'm getting dressed

13:37 I think geometric, all-over prints like houndstooth, plaid, gingham, stripes, etc. tend to work well on classics as long as the print is the same all-over to create a monochrome effect since it brings out the symmetrical features and essences in classics? while with dramatic it brings out their sharpness through structure, which can also be done through color-blocking but geometric prints are a nice balance between the two I think - of course the fit and styling of the clothes tend to matter most though!
@A45-r8s Жыл бұрын
Classics can wear prints but it's better to keep it as far away from the face, rounded patterns and/or very small patterns are the best.

my facial features aren't sharp or defined, they're very rounded and have a youthful look but my friends always say I have an intimidating aura which boggled me. When we started wearing masks is when I realized I have "intimidating" eyes. They're round yet sharp at the same time the best I could think of a similar pair is alexa demie's. Basically i look like im bored or uninetersted all the time. I can also never figure out what my essence is

This sounds like me. It’s kinda like a Siberian cat where they look cute but at the same time have intense eyes that intimidate depending on the mood. I get this a lot from people but I have a Latina background with native features that stick out. However i am mistaken as being taller than I am and even labeled modelesque at times. At one point I’ve had two people in school tell me I remind them of a cat and that I could be black widow from the avengers from the way I carry myself which can be assertive.

All case studies to me have similar foreheads - would a long, broad forehead be considered a yang dominant feature? I have high cheekbones, long oval face and small almond eyes, very Scandinavian features so would say dramatic dominant. My lips are full and plump (my largest facial feature so I often go for lipstick over anything else). RE forehead, I would say mine is akin to Nicole Kidman/Meryl Streep. Is this dramatic, natural or classic?

The thing is, knowing myself and my face very intimately, the realisation that I don’t have a strong natural influence is what got me into all of this stuff in the first place. Anything slightly unruly or relaxed does not and has never made me shine, so perhaps there’s traces of it, but focusing on that certainly doesn’t help me!
