What I love most about Second Sight is that they still offer standard releases for their discs, so that’s what I did with The Hitcher. You are right though Elliot, it is a tremendous time to be a collector. I’ve recently been able to focus on what I truly want and not get discs just for sake of making my collection look amazing.

Hi @ElliotCoen First, thank you for your videos. I always enjoy your intros that start with “hello dear viewer”. So inviting & pleasant to hear as if we are starting a conversation. I saw that Smoke had a new release and this is definitely a movie I’d like to add to my collection and share with my teenage son. I was slightly disappointed that the release wasn’t a 4K UHD release or at least a remastered blu-ray. We are getting such a wealth of material being remastered, I am surprised that a distributor would go to the extent of a release now w/o a remaster. I may overvalue the movie from when I saw in the theater, but I’d imagine that there would be great demand for a 4K scan that would sell well. I love the view you seem to share in your videos of the need for film preservation, getting the best possible scans to digital before the movies are lost. And thank you for sharing movies that I’d otherwise never hear about.

Thanks so much Michael! I haven’t but I’m hoping to once I upgrade my setup in 2025. My TV is calibrated to the best of my ability using all available options but I’ve never had a professional calibration if that’s what you mean.

@@marcjohnson3553 Hi Marc. I got these years ago from a seller on eBay. They are simply cut pieces of acrylic that slot together to form the stands. You might be able to find someone else who makes similar. Cheers!

I always enjoy Elliot's reviews as he is extraordinarily erudite about world cinema. I'm glad that he acknowledged that "Darling" displays moments of brilliance. It's always been a favorite. Smart script. A magnificent, Oscar-winning performance by Julie Christie. And one of the first instances of a positive presentation of a gay character (played by Roland Curram) in a mainstream film. I thought Umbrella did a nice job with this limited edition set. 👍

Watched 'The Hitcher' last night (superb film) - but, did anyone think the 4K was a bit soft at the beginning of the film? (get's better later on I should add). Fantastic extras as well, on the standard version (I don't need the box set)

Elliot, I really enjoy your videos and, as an avid collector myself, watch them all. But... ummm... did you actually WATCH The Hitcher? Because your description of the film is... wildly inaccurate. Rutger Hauer doesn't pick up the hitchhiker - he IS the hitchhiker. It's... the whole story. From scene one. (Also because of you I'm picking up the Smoke/Blue In The Face combo! Didn't know it was out!! Thank you!)

Fun how films Roger Ebert hated hated hated are getting resurrected this year (he gave zero stars to The Hitcher and Caligula). The Valley of the Bees is splendid.

I know you’ve watched a lot of BFI Flipside releases and wondered whether you’d gotten around to The Outcasts yet. Watched it last week and found it strangely beautiful, haunting and hugely impressive and another gem to add to my folk horror collection. Even better I’ve still got Severin’s All The Haunts Vol 2 and Starve Acre to come so I’ll be deep in folk horror right through to Xmas. And yes, The Wicker Man is due its annual rewatch … maybe next Thursday as I’m going to be bloody 50! Born 9 days after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre first hit cinemas and still a sweet, innocent angel! Enjoy the films, Elliot 🤪
