I’ve always been completely obsessed with this song. The guitar is genius, a sense of endlessness like a constant film loop. This whole song is so prismatic. I’ve listened to it god knows how many times and I still feel that surge of excitement as soon as it begins. I miss him, I miss him so much.

@Nicholas H I've come to realised that contrary to Cobain, Elliott was most likely stabbed in a moment of frenzy by his girlfriend. Why? Cause of the angle of the stabs. That's my theory, neighbors also heard a commotion going on. I don't want to go much into details - you can look it up for yourself - but Mrs. Chibba also called police like half an hour after the act. Imagine having the love of your life dead at your feet and waiting half an hour to dial for help, everything about this is shady

I heard of Elliott Smith in the past but I never bothered to listen to his music. Last month I watched a show on Netflix and Needle in the hay was in it. Now I can't stop listening to him. I'm always alone and feel like I don't belong anywhere and I really have no one. So, I don't know, it's like I found (and lost) a friend. I wish he was still around. Thanks, Elliott. Hey KRS - are you guys gonna pull a rabbit out of a hat and release Basement as it was intended (as a double 30 song album with Stickman, Taking A Fall, True Love etc)? I noticed KRS is selling Basement, much to my relief. Thank you for doing such a great job keeping this guys legacy intact. New Moon was a revelation, the revamped either/or and self titled are spectacular... I wish you guys had the rights to all his music. I hate when labels milk one or two extra song on reduxes (cough)Universal/UMG(cough) for decades. I’ll never forget seeing New Moon and wondering “how did they squeeze 24 shoddy tracks out of his catalog? Must be a lot of live stuff....” then I looked at the song listing. Only KRS would release 24 studio tracks like that. Anyways. Thank you.🖤

this was one of his earlier songs. its all about rejection and suicide. the ending he says he cant seem to join in the holiday celebration but that he is going to praise his maker which, turns out to be female. the final stanza where he repeats "and I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me" this she is either god as he knew it or perhaps his mother. either way, he seems to be hoping that either god never wakes him (Death) or his mother (Sleeping in to nurse a hangover). but why would he want his mother to NEVER wake him? the word NEVER implies an eternal request to not wake him, which to me, means death.
@miquel3657
@miquel3657 7 жыл бұрын
Till Brainman Very interesting point. The song definetely has a nihilist twist and it's almost like a short story. He's probably talking about depression, suicide and death. In this order. "So sick of it all asleep at home" is a clear reference to depression, like he just wanted to sleep because everything had lost all of its sense. Then "You know one day it'll come to haunt you" could perfectly be a reference about knowing that you might end up commiting suicide if you keep this depressed. And then in the church part he could perfectly be talking about his own funeral. Waking up after the church bell is a very poetic and smart way to say that you died. And obviously he's also saying that he's not there but he's praying anyway. I personally don't like to relate Elliott's songs to this kind of stuff because I know it goes further, but damn, this song seems to be talking about it so clearly.

Still around and very little has changed. Morphine, Methadone, Meth, Hydromorphone. Give it all to me. I can take everything these small stakes streets can dish out. Sift through my WiFi. Send my friends, my best friends, against me. Turn my own mind into a paranoid trap. Set me up with your ham fisted attempts at turning me into something like you. I am not a drug dealer. I am a drug addict. From where I sit there is a big difference.

@@lucassmith4524Hey man, how are you holding up these days? Just sitting here at 2 AM high out of my mind again from amphetamines, but in my mind I know this needs to be the last time and not the time before last like all of the other times. I’m sick of the drug related compromise. Im sick of the sickness and how it rots me out from the inside out. I’m sick of burning the bridges that connected me to people that made me feel loved. Beautiful people. A beautiful woman or two that had beautiful hearts attached to their beautiful bodies, beautiful minds, and beautiful faces. From where I stand right now, Im highly certain that it’s uncertain I’ll ever get her back, my family, or myself for that matter. I feel fated to have to walk the streets in my next phase of life. Walking those streets until something comes along that leads to me dying on those said streets. Streets far far away from home. Streets that I don’t know the names of or the shortcuts to take on them. Only the short acting highs from the drugs that are shortly to cut the threads that keep me alive. It’s safe to say I’m terrified of the terrors in my mind, and if I keep thinking about them the way I always do, they’re surely to manifest into a reality… The way..: They always do. So yeah, how about you?

So disappointing after hearing Either/Or ;/ Like not even 3 songs are melodic here. My fav: No name no.1

I'd say just keep at it. Try listening to all of his stuff chronologically. It's very interesting to see his progression. Either/Or is unlike anything else, not just within Elliott's discography but anywhere. Try to take them at face value until you've listened to all of them, seeing them in the bigger picture can make you feel completely different about them.

Roman Candle is very different to any of his later albums, FAR more raw and dark. I love it but it took me a while, definitely got into his later stuff first as it's much more accessible, especially either/or and XO (XO imo is a masterpiece, his best album and probably the best all round album I've ever heard).

Last call He was sick of it all Asleep at home Told you off and goodbye Well you know one day it'll come to haunt you That you didn't tell him quite the truth You're a crisis You're an icicle You're a tongueless talker You don't care what you say You're a jaywalker and you just, just walk away And that's all you do The clap of the fading-out sound of your shoes Made him wonder who he thought that he knew Last call He was sick of it all The endless stream of reminders Made him so sick of you sick of you sick of you Sick of your sound Sick of you coming around Trying to crawl under my skin When I already shed my best defense It comes out all around that you won And I think I'm all done You can switch me off safely While I'm lying here waiting for sleep to overtake me Yeah yeah you're still here but just check to make sure All you aspired to do was endure You can't ask for more ask for more Knowing you'll never get that which you ask for So you cast your shadow everywhere like the man in the moon You start to drink and just want to continue It'll all be yesteryear soon You start to drink and just want to continue It'll all be yesteryear soon Church bells and now I'm awake And I guess it must be some kind of holiday I can't seem to join in the celebration But I'll go to the service And I'll go to pray And I'll sing the praises of my maker's name Like I was as good as she made me And I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I'm lying here waiting for sleep to overtake me
