Elliott Smith is a great example of how you don't need to be complex or over the top to make fantastic songs. He had such a good grasp on conveying emotion in its purest form. His art and legacy will stand the test of time as a result.

I think even his most simple stuff is very complex, especially the guitar parts. He was a master of being complex without sounding like it. He doesn't have many songs that could be played by people with minimal instrument experience.

Subjective skills and arbitrary judgement is the chaos which makes music freedom. People think my art is dog shit.. but every once in awhile someone gets it.. Alex G made a fantastic diy catalogue at a younger age than Elliotts Early Crow recordings like, a”Three” or “mailman thinks me dumb. Lookup Alex G Skin cells or just Alex G unreleased if this is new info to you. Maybe you might like it.

I feel the same way. Started listening to him when I was 15 and I remember having a realization a few years ago that nothing I listen to will ever match what his music does for me. Many years later and I feel the same way. There are a lot of musicians I love, but Elliott is on his own plane with his songwriting alone.

God what a glorious song. His voice is so intimate, like he’s whispering in your ear. Comforting and sensual at once. There’s so much sensuality in his music and his voice. It’s really strong in this song. So beautiful. He’s been saving me during this covid insanity and the profound loneliness that’s come with it. Then again he’s been saving me for over twenty years. Enjoy it while you can. IT will soon be over if you keep looking...so don't look too diligently. I know the urge is there to find everything now now now but...resist. Wait...Stretch it out. Because he is dead and not coming back. There is a finite amount of his material and when you can no longer find more and know that for the rest of your life you will never hear a new Elliott Smith Song....well...that's a awful, empty, and lonely feeling. But that's life, ya know? SO take my advice and stretch him out. Make him last....Goddamn you Elliott Smith. I'll never forgive you....

my name jeff I know. And I try to find them whenever I can. Sadly there is garbage out there too. But one man's trash is another's treasure. I've known and listened to Elliott Smith's music since the 90s and I remember when and where I was when I heard that he died but his music did not really start to resonate with me until about two years ago at the start of a beautiful and sad chapter of my life. Since then hardly a day goes by without a little bit of his music. Even read a couple of his biographies. I think future generations will look at him like we look at Beethoven, Mozart, Van Gogh, and Earnest Hemingway

+Patrick James Staples Agreed. Although the loop is far more complex than it sounds, its rotates in 6 bars of 4/4 and has a bunch of layers to it. I made a close replica on a loop station using reverse reverb but couldn't quite get the exact sound. Its really quite amazing that he could make such a conplex song sound and have it sound so simple to the listener.

He often had to decide between a lot of different songs to put on his albums because of how prolific of a writer he was, and he always second guessed his decisions so that could maybe be why.

Elliott Smith, sadly, committed suicide in 2000. i don't like talking about why, but the context gives a new layer to his songs. So. the long and short of it: He stabbed himself in the chest four times while his girlfriend was being a twat. It staggers me every time i think what we could have had from this genius. if not for the twat. He left behind a crazy amount of songs. try 'grand mal' album - that's the unreleased stuff.

First of all, he died in 2003 October 21. I remember the day because it's my sisters birthday, second, there were 2 stab wounds. I was talking about posthumous albums like basement on a hill and new moon. I would love a new album. He has so many great unreleased stuff
@jonedwards9512
@jonedwards9512 9 жыл бұрын
LemonLord01 addendum to the above. It was never proved indubitably that he did/didn't kill himself. The case was botched. All that is known is that the inquest revealed wounds caused without hesitation; this did not correlate with "conventional" suicide through stabbing (the wounds are normally created hesitantly as the subject struggles to commit themselves to their actions)... Not that it really matters any more I suppose; a talented musician is dead and the world is poorer for it. :(
@sadreactsonly
@sadreactsonly 9 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Demarse It was never declared suicide. the case is still open. It was either Jennifer Chiba or someone she hired to do it if you ask me. In the very few cases of suicide that involved a person stabbing themselves in the heart, almost everyone of them took their shirt off before they did it. his shirt was on and they found defensive wounds. everyone wants to think it was a suicide because that fits in to the whole 'Elliott was a sad sap' complex that most people have. Elliott Smith did not kill himself and his murderer is out their starting fundraisers for suicide awareness.. fucking pathetic

It's the outro for the song lost and found but instead going into the song it fades out

holy shit I've heard a hip hop song with this sample. didn't know it was my favorite musician.

That's crazy because I always thought it would make a good sample for a hip hop song. Especially if someone like Mf doom, someone from hieroglyphics, or wu tang would do it.

Sounds oriental, I once mixed the sound of the guitare with the call of a muezzin after a trip in Istanbul, it was kinda weird but beautiful.
