Downloaded the recently uploaded video of the Echo show and laid the high quality bootleg of the concert with a little bit of EQ and noise reduction overtop. There were a couple of talking parts that wasn't in the audio source I used, so i just used the original videos audio.

​@Chris Steiger I noticed that, too! He probably played it higher during live shows because it was harder to hit lower notes in one take. Especially when you consider that he was just coming back to playing shows after going to rehab around this time, so his voice wasn't as strong as usual.

As someone who was an enormous fan of Elliott's at the time, I can tell you, we were all very concerned about him in those days - his struggles at the time are pretty well documented. So when he finally resurfaced a bit in late 2002 and 2003, it was such a huge relief. Sure, he was still getting his footing again, but he was *him* again. Looking back at this footage 21 years later, it's so clear to me how much he was really, really trying and so clearly happy to be playing music and seeing people again. It's bittersweet, of course, knowing how things ultimately worked out - but undeniably beautiful. We really miss you, dude.

Well said. I just listened to the recording of him in Chicago in May of 02 and to see the contrast from this performance 5 months later it’s like he regained his footing and kept hanging in there and this performance is amazing and beautiful and I’m just happy he was able to resurface at all and make a performance like this happen after it got really bad for him.

Perfectly put. He was a little 'Rusty' in this performance, but truly, and totally clear and "inside" the songs. He was ""Present". He was in full control. ....(none of the "stopping and starting" that he got caught up in ) ... His guitar technique on "Memory Lane" (not an easy song to play by any means), is as good as I've ever heard it. All of these songs, so well delivered. This performance is So good. @@Topspin89 It is, I learned it but Im not great at it haha. What's tough about it isn't really the chords or picking (also very hard though), but getting all the strings to ring out. It's tough to not play muted strings accidentally. Also Nick Drake is great too because of his ability to make a guitar sound like a living breathing creature. I think part of it was his DIY recording style, very intimate. Also I do love Elliot Smith, I just think these two artists are also great. But Elliot Smith's strumming style is so unique, and his songwriting is some of the greatest ever.

I was lucky enough to see him perform live 7 times and got to shake his hand once. An artist in the truest sense of the word. He was struggling through some of the shows. I remember a 2 night stint in NYC. The first night he could barely make it through his set and stopped performing about 20 minutes in. The crowd was cheering him on to keep playing but he was clearly too intoxicated. The very next evening he was sober and played the most inspired, mind blowing show I’d ever seen from a guy with just and acoustic guitar. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since his death. Anniversary was just 5 days ago. A true legend. ❤️ Elliott Smith.

Celebrities dont have a real,raw,human quality like this anymore. Elliot was one of a kind. Just a regular appearing guy with a spectacular ability to emote for the audience. His interaction with the crowd seems much more extroverted than usual and his pupils are totally dilated in those lights. He's way more nervous and shy in the later videos where he is actually clean. Agree, no judgement - getting in front of a crowd and being "on" is a lot of pressure, especially for such a raw, sensitive person. Impossible not to feel for him.

He was on meds, a stimulant for adhd? people I know who suffer from addictive disorders typically don’t take them as their psychiatrist who understands the treatment wouldn’t suggest that med. The other problem is that when suffering from addiction being totally sober after being on serious drugs is sometimes much worse (that’s why longer term treatment facilities exist to walk people through that healing time that is inherently Uncomfortable and tough.” It’s messy and the truth we will never really know with Elliott. It’s just sad. That’s it.

I had this on mp3 around 2006/7 and searched all over Elliott Sites and lime wire-esq sketchy torrents for footage, I literally gave up over 10 years ago. And today, I got a lovely surprise. His is certainly relaxed, but he keeps it together and the set-list is to die-for (wrong word) The shows after this are a little tough to watch. We know so much more about mental health and addiction these days..people get upset about dead rockstars and all that crap, but with Elliott people actually loved him. I literally listened his work until I was sick of it, and I had the same problem with the beatles...so I haven't heard him or this gig in years. So yeah, he's seriously up there with Lennon and Paul McCharmly in the songwriting stakes.

This is amazing. Many thanks to the person who uploaded the video and to you for merging it with the audio bootleg. I was in the second row that night, to the right of this angle. Elliott was in rough shape during this time, often slurring between songs, and we were always worried about him being able to get through a show. As concerning as that was, once a song started, it was completely mesmerizing. You're lost inside his music, and all was forgotten. This set captures all of that. Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the openers that night were Daniel Lanois and Rilo Kiley, and this was a benefit show for Jennifer Teft, the head booker for the Echo and Spaceland.

As a massive Elliott fan, I have to say that even though his voice and playing are a bit shaky here given the situation at the time, his voice sounds probably the best I've ever heard it here. Maybe it's because of how close the camera is, and it's picking his natural voice along with the Mic. Anyways, videos like this really make me miss him, and remember my own absolute fascination back when I first discovered him a few years ago, and how I spent at least a couple years listening to little else but him, and marveling at his guitar parts while I deconstructed them. This video makes me realize that had he not died, we would have gotten more of this. He was so amazing, and thank you so much for uploading this.

@@ianlennoxx wasnt high but pretty drunk by the end of it. If I remember right, jenny lewis opened up, not a big fan but with Elliott it was a great mood. People were really excited. It was full house but he seemed more together than a few months later at spaceland, where things seemed to be taking a toll on him healthwise (IMO anyways). Id seen Elliott 5 times but this was my favorite acoustic show of his. I was probably back 20 feet or so, so its pretty cool to have a view this close up!

At @41:03 or so, someone in the crowd yells "Steven" and Elliott says "That's right, howd ya guess?" I assume this person was trying to be clever knowing that Elliott's birth name is Steven. Elliott then says "Drozd" isn't here right now, a reference to Steven Drozd, the drummer of Flaming Lips. I don't know if Steven Drozd was known by others in that scene at the time, but he did play drums on one Elliott Smith song "Coast to Coast".
