It's important to remember these songs: to remember that this is a double album of outtakes that didn't even make it onto the two albums pressed during their composition. It's important because so many of them are understated masterpieces, like Smith's work as a whole. If you have in yourself a creative spark, whatever your medium, remember this: It's not important to remember these songs so as to become discouraged; but rather, it's important to remember these things songs to take them in as fuel with which the singular spark in you and only you might shine, for its time, in this place. For any who needs to see or hear or know what you have to say.

Elliott smith is a taurus moon, an exalted placement for the moon, gifted with an enrichment of passion able to be expressed as a whole, he is the light, and he expresses just that on different dynamic polarities, this man is gifted, and he activated that throughout many souls who listen because of how desperate he is for someone to understand him without giving it away completely

An old friend of mine from high school days was in a car accident where his little car ended up flipping and rolling. He survived without broken bones or lacerations. But, he did sustain a bump or two to the head. He was severely changed after that. Struggled and struggled for years with depression and swift often violent mood swings.( note to self, scrawl the word mood on the seat of a swing in the park) anyway, he was put on different meds and after years and years he finally seemed to be ok. Or much better. Then one day I got the news. He had gotten a bottle of liquor and one winter night found a large Oak tree sat with his back against it and drank all night. They found him in the morning but he was gone. Finally at peace. I miss you buddy. See you soon. Oh yeah, this song reminds me of that.

@@Ginglover9000 I’m so sorry to hear that. I had a buddy like that, she was going through a lot at the time and took sleeping pills to go peacefully. That’s the type of pain that never leaves you, I think about her everyday but I can only hope that she is finally at peace after the terrible hand she had. May your friend rest in peace, and I hope that his soul is at rest with no more pain or problems.

So sorry to hear that.... I myself am here because of my own current depression, though I do have a similar but happier story to share.... almost 10 years ago I was coming home from a party, and walking over the bridge I saw a guy about to jump, and stopped him.... he mentioned he had broken up with his girlfriend (pretty much the same as me now) and had lost the will to go on, anyway I talked with him and walked through the tunnel near the bridge, he called up his girlfriend and she waited for us at the other side.... they both thanked me and got back together

To me, this song is about missing somebody that you know can't come back. Its about missing yourself. Missing love. Missing trust in somebody. Examining our own actions and reflecting only in shadow. After things are tainted. Having to live with a endless malaise of pessimism even when you want happiness. You seem to go the other way. You keep going down a road of nowhere. When you know the only one who can save you is yourself.

Very true, I will put this on repeat... I was dating this girl, she was perfect in every way for me... but I messed up real bad, and lost her, just because of my bad alcohol habits... although she may never come back to me as a partner, we will meet soon, and I would give anything just for her to look my way again, as she once did... and even if we can't get back together in the end, I'll still cherish every moment we did share

Whatever neil young does with the guitar its closer to that. And I think thats called Folk Rock? Maybe im wrong in the classification.

Ok now this lyric hit me... within the past few months, I have lost 2 jobs (both due to shitty bosses and the fact I was expendable as I was new in both of those jobs)... I should have stayed at my old job from before, I was there 6 years but it wasn't paying well, but at least the boss was somewhat decent and wouldn't randomly fire people (though, recently, his company also has been losing money so he fired 1/4 of his entire workforce, so not sure I can even say the same for him) Seems this is going on everywhere... me and my brother were both fired from our jobs on the same day, and my girlfriend is also looking for jobs with no success so far... just no jobs, and everyone seems to be getting fired (often people starting new jobs)... whole economy is fucked worldwide... There's a version here of him actually playing this live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWXIfX6QaN2Zipo The play in these songs of walking basslines, syncopations, and percussive chords is so enveloping. I can't imagine being near someone while making this sound that says something just as intense to me as the lyrics. It's also amazing how the curation of New Moon accomplished this thematic unity in unreleased tracks around honoring loss and longing for feeling. There seems to me entirely other groupings out there as well, like around family interactions in Abused, Flowers for Charlie, Antonio Carlos Jobin, Blue Mood
