Removing The BLOWN Turbo On My Volvo V70R Was Quite The Job!

Removing the turbo from my Volvo V70R is something I've been looking forward to... And dreading.
Today I embark on the FINAL mechanical repair on my 2005 Volvo V70R. Ever since I've had the car running "correctly", I've noticed a huge plume of oil smoke every time I'm under boost for a few seconds and let off. Turns out, my turbocharger has a bad seal and is leaking oil. This oil leakage caused my PCV system to clog prematurely, and over time, would cause my catalytic converter to fail. So, out the turbo goes!
But, before the turbo comes out, my uncle and I are going to bleed the brakes!
I am sending the turbo off to NM Turbo Co to be rebuilt and slightly upgraded.
Thanks for watching!

Please do not quit. It is good content man. Probably my favorite car on your channel since the hellcat. That car was a total keeper. Wish you had kept it….I bet you think so as well. I have been into the 92-94 Audi S4 for ever, also the 95 Audi S6 they are very similar cars and both share the AAN 20vt inline 5cyl turbo. The motor is legendary and Volvo stayed in the 5cyl game longer than Audi. The V70R runs the k24 7400 from borgwarner. A bunch of Audi guys run a modified version of that turbo and make amazing power without sacrificing spool. My newest edition and current keeper status car came home March and is a 93 S4 with a nice gtx3071 with custom software. Get your maintenance done and crank up the boost with a little exhaust work. You will get hooked and your channel will approve. Peace!

That turbo coolant line has two copper washers, which are good at absorbing shock from the impact gun. That's probably why they were so difficult to remove. They don't take much torque, I believe it's 25nm. I usually remove them no problem with hand tools.

It's hilarious to watch how paralleled your repairs and experience are to my own v70r I bought early last year. AWD issue, SAS repair, PCV, brakes, so many things I've done just to see a video from you a few weeks after. Important note, the listed way in VIDA to bleed the brakes is actually opposite the normal bleed process, starting with front left inner caliper, then going inner to outter caliper on each, finishing on the rear right. Something that also helped my pedal feel was "burping" the abs/bcm. Build pressure with the pedal same as bleeding the brakes, then crack the lines going to the bcm. I think there was a good video on here from Peppermint of the process

Way to go Elliot and crew! I have a 2004 V70R and it too has been very expensive to own. I am following this series with great interest to see what might be in store for me next. I have a few things done on my car that might be beneficial for yours. As others have mentioned, stainless steel brake lines make all the difference in brake pedal feel on my car. The pedal travel is half of what it is on my other P2 Volvos (S80/XC90) and the pedal is very firm. I also noticed that your A pillar trim is shedding the fabric. You can easily replace that trim with the same part from the base model V70-it is simple molded plastic and very cheap via junk yards. Keep up the great work and I hope that the turbo install goes faster than the removal.

Ah yes, good to see Volvo haven't really changed much in 30 or so years. My father-in-law had a Volvo 940 SE Turbo, 2.3 ltr engine with the low pressure turbo. Great car, but as soon as it started drinking oil, and the electrics started going in various areas, and the airbag warning lights started coming on (they need to be replaced every 10 years) we knew its time had come. We had that car for about 12 years, we used it a lot for towing boats and horse boxes. It had done about 130,000 miles by the time we sold it. Around town its fuel economy was awufl, but on a motorway I could get it into the high 30's MPG wise. Great videos, its great to watch, your uncle is brilliant too. Keep up the great work!

If it has an intercooler , you had better take it out and clean it out, because the oil will usually be from the inlet side seeing the higher pressure is on the exhaust side.

One thing you are going to learn soon is that a Volvo is never not broken. An example is the ‘98 V70 GLT parked in front of my house. It is on it’s third transmission, has a headliner that doesn’t exist, and the bolts holding the AC condenser fell out while driving one day so the AC doesn’t work. But wait, there’s more, one of the lifters sounds like it wants to be space debris and there is a ghost code regarding the EVAP system that makes it incredibly difficult to smog in CA. The reason I would put up with it is because I love it and when they work they’re very nice.

Taking the turbo out of my Focus ST (with a Volvo engine) I had to take out one of the driveshafts for clearance to drop it out of the bottom. The turbo itself was integrated into the exhaust manifold so I had to undo the whole thing from the block. Bought a new core and rebuilt turbo myself. Saved a lot over buying a whole unit. Works great.

The good thing about having my engine out to replace the block, is the access to the turbo. Mine wasn't leaking oil past the seals, but I'm debating whether or not to rebuild it before sending the subframe back into it's cave. There are kits to rebuild the K24 too if you are so inclined. Pretty simple if you're careful and index the compressor wheel to the turbine shaft as to not upset the balance. Also, look for cracks in the turbine housing around the wastegate. Common, but not too serious.

Elliot, the access to the turbo is MUCH better when the Angle gear is removed.....and yes I realize that the prop shaft and right side axle have to come out to get the angle gear out, but I wouldn't attempt to do the turbo without removing it. I think when you go to reinstall, you will find it is harder yet to work in the cramped space, and do a proper job. Also, there is a coolant drain petcock on the back of the motor on the coolant piping, which would have made this project less messy.

When I had that car new it had a little oil in the charge pipe. I took it to the dealer under warranty and they swore it was normal. Talking with other owners I found it was common. Never seen that on any of my other Turbos. While you've got it out, you should replace the engine bushings. I got a nice set of polyurethane ones from IPD.

You are a gluten for punishment but you finally got the turbo out. I look foward to the next part where hopefully the turbo is fixed and you can have a fight putting it back in 😬. I look foward to the finished product

there are a lot of company's doing rebuild but duke city turbo bricks is one of the only ones spin balancing the whole chra to 120k rpm. the turbos he builds can run more then 2x the boost they can run pre modification.

I have a "95 850R and "00 S70R my first cars I ever bought. I feel the pain had to replace both volvo's turbos. Just to get space to get them out was a lego nightmare 😄

Dealer book is 6 hrs labor for this job, they pull the front driveshafts and the bevel or angle gear box out , that makes it a whole lot easier to get at everything. Its probably faster in the end, we try to save time and ends up taking days.

Dropping the whole suspension with engine/trans attach might be the way to go here. That is certainly how I've done engine swaps, with a lift, it really isn't hard to do, just the electrical connectors can be frustrating to disconnect when some just come right off, others...

I had a 1998 silver V70r AWD loved that car and the turbo blew up! After 2k worth of work. Another 2k just for the turbo. But I know now who would have done the work. My old boss from Advance. It would have been done correctly!

Great videos Elliot, just shows you what money pits these cars can be, and you haven’t sorted the paint out yet, how did the turbo replacement go? We are all waiting.

I'm sure the turbo could use a service but this problem reminds me of a Volvo I worked on years ago. It was a turbo that was smoking really bad and all it was was a clogged port where that vacuum line attaches at the middle of the turbo. It got clogged up.

Note on the brakes in the R: they are not immediate but they should feel linear. If you steep on it, you're going through the windshield, there should be some travel at the top, once you press a little more you'll stop a little more. Give it a stab and you will get that brembo brake feel you're looking for
