For the record, the amplifier didn't work either....
Welcome back everyone! Today I finish up the PCV install on my Volvo V70R, as well as install the new yaw sensor, radio amplifier, and CEM. Everything was going so well... Until it wasn't. Now I'm not sure what to do. Let me know in the comments what you would do in my shoes!
There's also a brief cameo from ‪@WatchJRGo‬ so go follow him if you haven't already!

Well, the one positive to take away from this video is that your uncle is an absolute legend for helping out like he did. It's a shame things didn't work out with the computer, hopefully a second trip up north will see it fixed. If it were me, I'd fight to get it running and then restore it because it's such a rare find... and a pretty nice car to boot!

Rule of thumb, whenever you’re doing a big job like that under the hood that involves intake and exhaust manifold extraction, always inspect and replace any and all vacuum hoses, clamps, gaskets, pcv valves, etc. There’s no better time to do it and if they’re not already broken I promise you that it’s just a matter of time before they do break. So I always make sure to do my research on what has to come apart and what parts are involved before I get into it so that I know what parts to order and I’ll have them on hand and ready to replace them when I get into it.

LOL... I feel your pain went through all of that on my 2005 XC90. After all that engine work my car still wouldn't start. Used the same Canadian computer guys in Canada sent them my ECM, CEM still no go. Then I realized that there was no fuel. Changed the fuel pump .... FYI never change the fuel pump in the winter outside plastic gets brittle. In the end it was the FCM (Fuel Control Module) that controls fuel output. Idiots designed it to sit outside the car, located near the rear passenger wheelwell outside of the car. talk about corrosion. I bought that new since used would be in similar condition, I also bought an addtional cable that would extend the cable so I could move the unit inside the car. The easiest location for me was under the rear passenger seat, it's a very simple job I'm not a mechanic so it's definately an easy job. I had all those same limp mode issue most Volvo owners have suffered. That was a year ago and my car runs great ever since. You should open that amp unit and check out the electronic board. Sometimes all you need to do is clean the board with 99.9% pure Isopropyl Alcohol, Amazon sells it or any electronic board cleaner. Also make sure the pigtails to the ECM and the CEM are clear of corrosion and non of the pins have bent during removal or replacement. and check the pigtails that connect from the inside to the CEM, since it's in such a tricky location. Good Luck and don't sell it, it's frustrating I know but a simple fix.

If you haven't, be sure to re-tighten the throttle body after the car's warm (run the car for 20 mins (when it runs properly) then re tighten). After tightening, hit max boost to make sure it won't pop off. I managed to pop the duct off with just a wee bit of boost the day after I replaced the PCV and had to limp home for 30 minutes at 30mph max :D

Great video! I checked my '14 Cayman S and I had three center caps that pointed to the valve stem and one that did not. I took two tiny screwdrivers and inserted them into the holes and was able to twist the cap so that it did point to the valve stem. Cool catch! CRC Brakleen is amazing stuff, but wear gloves when you use it. That stuff will literally take the oil right out of your skin, which causes an annoying tingling sensation. And NEVER get it near flame or something hot: It breaks down into a chemical that is highly poisonous...

I've done 3 of those PCV systems all on cars well over 200k. I'm honestly surprised that they didn't sell you that part with the broken pipe in the kit or at least suggest it, because yeah those always break when moved around for that repair. I actually have a 2004 S60 R (autotragic) 265k miles and have never had an issue with the CEM. They're clearly a pretty major electronic component, but typically relatively reliable. Best of luck with the repair these really are great cars when running correctly.

Had similar issues with my CEM in my V70R (2007). Sent it to Xemodex twice, and it did go back to running ok. The electrical system is so picky in these things. Just before I scrapped mine, the wiring in the engine was shorting, and you can’t buy new wiring for it, but what was the end of the wagon was the angle gear crapping out. I’d recommend dumping yours, or make it a real project and find some other drivetrain to put in it - maybe a Subaru 2.5 turbo?

A few years ago, I had a 2007 C70 T5 with a very similar issue. I was on a road trip from NC to CA. After fueling up somewhere in Nevada, the car started doing strange things. First, the engine cut off entirely while I was driving on the highway, lost power steering and all the gauges. I pulled over and tried to restart it, only the wipers turned on without me turning the wiper stock. The cluster lit up like a Christmas tree. Then I unplugged the battery for 5 min, then restarted it, it started, but I couldn't roll down all windows, there were no gauges, and the radio doesn't work either. I drove to San Diego like this then parked it overnight, the next day everything was fine. I used it for the entire trip from CA to WA, then back to NC. On my way back home, the same thing happened again in IL, this time the car simply won't start. Got it towed to a local Volvo dealer, the guy knocked the alternator with a stick, which it worked. After getting back to NC, I replaced the PCV, which it needs replacement before my CA trip, nothing else, and the car became normal again. That was the strangest thing I have ever experienced.

I don’t think this is ECU/ECM as from my personal experience bricking a Volvo ECU/ECM trying to modify firmware and flipping pins wrong way around resulted in the entire car being unable to start or maintain running condition. Could be BCM or Body control module has gone bad, I know the wipers are wired to the BCM, not main power for them but the control wires are, as are the hazard lights and headlights and taillights. Only thing odd is DIM or vaguer cluster is entirely offline, that is usually wired right to CEM however I have seen other cars/brands where the network is offline that the gauges use to communicate causing them to basically operate is if unpowered. The good thing about a BCM is usually not performance oriented so on these cars. if it is BCM then can pull a BCM from any volvo of similar age and same chassis type. Downside is BCM is usually locked to VIN numbers so would still need to modify it in software or clone old BCM to new one. I haven’t been following the series, so I don’t know what they did exactly but sounds like may have flipped some wires back to front somewhere when rebuilding something..

This video had a bit of everyone in it, including JR who apparently never sleeps so he can be in 3 places at once! I also can't remember the last time I saw any of my favorite automotive KZbinrs doing any Volvo content, so I'm enjoying watching this (I'm a GM guy, I know jack about Volvo's) - I hope you get this sorted out Elliot, sorry I can't be of ANY help on this to even offer a suggestion other than "you have electrical gremlins" 😅

Can't give up on Spaceball 1 yet!! Especially after all that work cleaning up the PCV system and refrying the computer. Seems to me for $600, they would have sent you a known good computer and not tried to rebuild YOURS. Good luck and make sure to appreciate your Uncle and Jacob (even injured!) !! Got a 2004 S80. Most sensitive electrial electrical system I've ever seen. If you've been changing computers and and the main one does'nt recognise it you may well have to get it reprogrammed. On mine the battery being low gave me erroneous trouble lights. When I got mine, a lot of strange stuff went away as I repaired minor stuff that would appear to be unrelated. You can have two lights that work but are from diffrent companies. The car thinks there's a light out because they read diffrent resistance. It's been a great car, been easy to maintain, but it will throw you for a loop somtimes. I would be tempted to check the ignition switch.

Keep it going. If it’s gotta come down to it just take it to Volvo and have them diagnose it. I’ve currently got a 2007 Volvo S80 V8 AWD I’m replacing radiator and hoses in, these rare Volvo’s are worth fixing and getting back on the road. Just keep going man, I enjoy all your videos. You need either a brand new CEM, or one known working from a junkyard. Hopefully, your "fixed" CEM didn't permanently damage something else in the process of frying itself.

I'm wondering if something is dodgy with the wiper control line(s), not the power and ground. Perhaps there's a short from +12v to a control wire within the wiper motor unit. The motor unit may still bench test okay as its power and ground is intact, but when connected to the car, the motor unit backfeeds +12v without current limiting to the control output on the CEM. This could certainly fry the wiper driver MOSFETs/transistors, releasing the magic smoke - and they could have failed in such a way that they are preventing the rest of the CEM from powering up properly. This could certainly explain some of the repeated CEM failures- particularly if they just replaced the wiper driver components. A bad wiper motor unit could be killing that part of the CEM every time it's repaired. Maybe it would be worthwhile to check the control pins on the wiper motor for 12v when power and ground is connected on the bench, and perhaps compare that against another wiper motor assembly.

I seem to have suffered the same CEM failure on my 2003 XC90. The transmission would thump (it is Aisin 5-speed automatic), I'd get a sound like relays clicking, lost most of my electrics and the engine (2.4 litre D5) was still running. There was a "BRAKE FAILURE - STOP SAFELY" and an SRS message on the display before the instrument cluster stopped working. It has been with a local specialist for just over 2 weeks (at the time of writing - 1st November 2022). I'm hoping that they will be able to repair the CEM. $600 seems a bit steep for a CEM repair. I know of another specialist (Volvo Diagnostic in Tilbury, UK) who offers a CEM repair service for £150 (early P2 platform) and £160 (later P2 platform) plus shipping. Even a replacement remanufactured CEM is cheaper at either side of £300 so it probably would've been cheaper to ship your CEM to them in the UK. I know that you've got it all sorted since you uploaded this video. I just wanted to share my own CEM issues.
