This is such a beautiful soap. I make this for my friend Alison a few times a year 💕 She just loves that natural rosy scent! This video demonstrates the complete making of this diagonal pour cold process soap, with attention paid to the preparation, pouring and cutting of the soap. The recipe is provided below.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Please watch this video to learn more about essential soap making safety precautions: • Soap Making Safety Ess...

RECIPE
My mould used in this video is 37cm long, 7cm wide and 5.7cm deep
It holds 1.480kg of soap batter (1000g base oils is a good amount for this mould).
To work out the base oil amount for your mould, see this video • Calculate Soap Recipes...
For this soap, I made two identical half-sized batches, each with 500g base oils. The quantities given below are for one half-sized batch. Two halves are needed to make the entire soap.
Half batch:
70% olive oil - 350g
20% coconut oil - 100g
5% castor - 25g
5% cocoa butter - 25g
Water 118g (1.7:1 water to lye ratio/37% lye concentration solution)
Sodium hydroxide 69g (4% superfat calculated into the recipe)
White kaolin clay - 1 teaspoon
Or pink clay - 1/2 teaspoon (use one colour for each half)
Essential oils - 35g needed for the entire soap, so 2 lots of 17.5g are needed for each half batch.
To make 17.5g blend for each half, mix:
14.9g rose geranium essential oil
2.6g rosewood essential oil
*Note, due to the issue of rosewood trees facing extinction in their natural habitat, I will no longer be using rosewood essential oils once my current bottle is empty. Ho Wood essential oil is a good sustainable substitute for rosewood essential oil.
METHOD

Thank you for your beautiful recipe. I made the soap and some of the soap turned out lovely but unfortunately some didn't. I fear I may have made a mistake with the lye concentration. But I will do the PH testing to check and re-batch if needed. Anyway, I was very happy with the 'diagonal' pour. I would like to try it again but will experiment with a different scent next time as the Rose Geranium is absolutely divine but super expensive for a mistake. I'll give it another go though. Thanks again.

Such a fan, Elly! Thank you for another great tutorial video and recipe. I've finally been able to use my first soaps from a double-batch I did at the new year. have been so proud that I'm mailing off extra and giving bars to all of my neighbors. I need to work on my soaping temperature, though, since it was winter and my windows were open for fear of lye fumes. I think it made the house temperature too low for mixing everything and caused some white spots in the finished product. I tested them with ph strips before using/gifting and they were just cosmetic. I used the half ice/half water trick and the fumes weren't nearly as bad as I had anticipated. And if, by chance, you are looking for an idea for a new video, it would be very helpful for beginner soapers to have a lesson on the merits/drawbacks of using the different common oils in recipes (ex. olive v. cocoa butter v. coconut). Thank you for introducing and guiding me in soap making!

Thankyou for mentioning in the description about Rosewood trees facing extinction, I didn't know this but I am not too surprised either as it was heavily logged in northern n.s.w ( where I am from) for timber in the past to the point of losing most of it there in the rainforest. I don't want to contribute to such precious plants becoming extinct forever.. everywhere.. so this bottle I have will be my first & my last. It's very sad such plants can't be better protected in general. I have a keen nostalgia for the scent of the fresh sawdust due to it was discovered in the very old floorboards of the house I grew up in & my parents were shocked and delighted (in a way) because our house had been originally a banana shed haha & wasn't much to look at when they bought it but under the grey weathered boards was the most stunning red wood and when they sanded it the house smelled so beautiful. The real wood has such a soft delicate yet robust scent, never smelled anything like it. The essential oil smells different to the fresh wood anyway so my little bottle (although nice) isn't quite the same. Anyway if you or anyone has read this far well done and my apologies haha, just had to tell the story and thanks so much for another gorgeous soap to watch you create. I'll have to try this diagonal pour technique one day. And I just love the soft colours you achieved using the clays xx Thanks Elly

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking do you think I could add in some honey and oatmeal at trace? Plus if I were to add some extra shea butter at trace do I need to reduce the superfat included in your recipe? Thank you so much!

Hi Elly, I enjoy watching your soap making videos as I started researching how to make bath soaps as my son has mild eczema. We can only make soaps at licensed workshops as sodium hydroxide is a controlled chemical is Singapore. Your homemade soaps look amazing! Living vicariously through you.. Cheers 😄

This looks amazing! I love rose geranium scent and it looks so good with the two colours. Would you use rose geranium on its own or do you really need to blend it? Do you ever use fragrance oils?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 2 жыл бұрын
I rarely use FO's, I just love EO's. You can use rose geranium on its own, but I think it's better blended with a woody base not to ground the scent. A small amount of cedar would be nice too.

You can rebatch it, and re-introduce the ingredient that was left out. This is the basic rebatch method I use kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYW0XnZqgZhpadE

Thank you Melanie, that's so nice! You could substitute for any other butter (shea, mango etc), but if you don't have any of those the recipe would need to be recalculated and some of the other oils increased. You can learn how to do that here kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6KuqZykZdZkmK8
