Good morning Joe, That was very interesting to watch. I've split a lot of elm and it can be awkward but it makes top quality firewood. Just an observation, the knives on the Japa perfect split are probably half the thickness of some on competitors machines I've seen,which are to me, way too thick and cause wood to jam or flip over on the more open wedges. The knives on my machine ( which I made myself as the originals were junk) are only 8mm thick. I keep them sharp and I've never bent or broken one yet. This is a huge advantage and tells me Japa have done a great job in designing their machines. Keep splitting 🇬🇧

Joe you should spray the section where you have rust with some WD-40. I ran a production saw in the early 80’s and it was 50 years old then. Not a speck of rust because at the end of the day we’d always spray it down with WD-40.

You normally activate the cut off bar while splitting the prior piece believe you should have applied those actions for the test! The split ram did do a remarkable job would be great to know what the relief valve spec/setting is on that valve! Everyone is entitled to their opinion but we me live Elm makes excellent shade and that about covers it's positive aspects. Obviously your processor is a tremendous machine!

I never had difficulty with piss elm, splitting with sledge/wedges or 16 hp splitter. Cut & split trees with 36" base or larger. Modern Elm does not grow as large in diameter before mother nature kill it, but it burns like its counterpart of the 1950's. Great BTU's & appetite from loading unto trailer & processing same. Too bad it is disappearing like Ash, Ironwood & Beech Trees.

Have you ever split hickory on your 405? I've have hand split hickory many time's and it is one of the hardest wood to split even on my 35 ton log splitter. The next hardest wood is hedge it's a very hard wood. Hedge is so hard it like a rock. Hand splitting hedge wood takes hours to split with wedges. Even my 35 ton log split has a very hard time splitting the hedge wood. So I challenge you and you 405 to split hickory and hedge if y'all have hickory and hedge in Ohio.

I would give a guy down the street that sold fire wood all my elm. Him and his dad built a splitter with a 6 inch ram out of a trash truck. I beam look like a bridge beam lol had a winch (hand crank) I had a agreement with him that if he wanted it he had to take good bad and ugly. So that is why the ole man built the splitter so he could split them big ole y s and knots.he wood bring a 40 foot gooseneck and man did I load him down his dad would get so mad at me but oh well. That splitter had a cycle that took about 3 minutes just to come back lol. Even that crazy thing wouldn’t split those red elm. Now u have the easy elm we call it white elm and it splits pretty easy but if u get some red cedar elm just toss it in the fire pit. Ole Herald bell was his name and he sold the crap out of it and mix it up with that junk cotton wood slab stuff 5 inches of bark and 3 wood. Cheap wood that takes a lot to produce. Poore people have poore ways

Is there a noticable difference in types of Elm for splitting? I know of red and white for sure but I think there's a yellow as well. Ours in Wisconsin is normally much rougher when split (never tried it with a 405 though) i think we have red and white here, just my curiosity.

I don't know about that. I have only dealt with the American Elm. I saw a Chinese elm in a arboretum once and some type of elm in Finland but I can't distinguish between the others.

@@ohiowoodburnerHi Joe - Big Rodders here. Sycamore is my favourite wood to buck and split. The bark & wood splits cleanly - similar to Beech but much less liable to explode when you hit real pressure points such as knots.

Did you split that chunk with the curve and knot? That would be a good one to split with regular splitting knives. Oak vs elm what kind of BTUs you get out of elm.
@ohiowoodburner

I didn't split it. It is in my ibc for the Axis. I will try to get it filmed. Elm isn't as high as oak but dries out much faster and has good btu.
