Welcome back, Andy. Let me get you caught up on the meaning behind this extraordinary concept album. I suggest you read my full comment and then go back privately and re-listen to the first 3 tracks, which I break down for you below. Eldorado's concept is about a young-ish British man in the 1970s...likely from London, or perhaps Birmingham, where Jeff Lynne grew up...who hates his dreary life, his boring job as a bank clerk in the city, the persistent cold & rainy weather, and the ugly, soulless, city buildings that surround him, which he derisively calls in one song, *"towers of concrete".* What makes his life even more unbearable is that when he falls asleep he has wonderful, joyous dreams, that are the antithesis of his reality during all his waking hours. He increasingly craves this idyllic dream-world, which he's named, Eldorado. (After the mythical South American City of Gold believed to exist by Spanish explorers in the 16th century, that they named, El Dorado. That name today means any place of great riches and opportunity.) Most of the songs are about these fabulous dreams, but not all of them, some are about the misery he's struggling to cope with in his real life. *"Eldorado Overture"* The album opens with this mostly instrumental track, the only lyrics being a narration by the god of Jeff's character's dream-world, Eldorado. He's named this god of dreams, Mister Kingdom. (Similar to, Morpheus...not from, The Matrix, but rather, the Greco-Roman God of Dreams/Sleep.) Mister Kingdom sets the stage for the album thusly: The dreamer, the unwoken fool In dreams, no pain will kiss the brow The love of ages fills the head The days that linger there in prey of emptiness, of burned-out dreams The minutes calling through the years The universal dreamer rises up above his earthly burden Journey to the dead of night High on a hill in Eldorado *"Can't Get It Out Of My Head"* In the album's second track, Jeff's character awakens from one of these blissful dreams, and, suddenly reminded of his bleak and boring life working as a bank clerk in the city, he laments that his heroes such as Robin Hood, William Tell, Ivanhoe, and Lancelot--all men of great adventure--would not envy him or his sad, dull existence. The verse goes: Bank job in the city *[his boring job as a clerk]* Robin Hood and William Tell And Ivanhoe and Lancelot *[four of his heroes, men of great adventure]* They don't envy me *[no, I wouldn't think such men would envy him and his mundane life]* Sitting 'til the sun goes down *[presumably at this desk in the bank, waiting impatiently 'til the end of the day]* In dreams the world keeps going 'round and 'round *[the excitement and adventure of his nighttime dream-world, where he wants to be]* The song, "Can't Get It Out of My Head", prepares the way for the rest of the album's idyllic dreams. *"Boy Blue"* The third track is one helluva delusional dream. In it, our lonely bank clerk, who feels he's insignificant in the real world, has this grandiose dream that he's a medieval war hero returning home from the Crusades to a rapturous welcome by his town-folk. But, the bank clerk is so insecure, that even such a fantastic dream is not grandiose enough to make him feel good about himself. No, his insecurities conjure up an even MORE grandiose dream, by dreaming that he's not JUST a war hero returning home to roaring applause and adulation, but he's a RELUCTANT war hero, at that! LOL That he's a, war-hero-turned-pacifist! Yes, in this bank clerk's subconscious mind, being a war hero wasn't impressive enough, he had to *_up_* the fantasy to make himself a saintly figure, as well, preaching against war itself and vowing to never take up arms again. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Cosmo 👍. It's good to be back! Especially as I've missed all the knowledge subscribers like yourself share with me that adds weight and meaning to the songs I'm hearing. I truly appreciate it ❤️. Based on your suggestion, I'll give the first three tracks another listen before continuing on with the album. Thank you for your support. 🤘🎶✌️

Really enjoying these newest reactions. Can I also suggest you delve into The Allman Brothers Band (maybe start with “Whipping Post”) and early Elton John (if you are familiar with some of his hits, maybe try a deeper track like “I’ve Seen That Movie Too,” “Madman Across the Water” or “Take Me to the Pilot”).
