Their best album by far and perhaps my favorite track of theirs too. The cellos and violin they used were played by band members and hearing that live (which I did) was unbelievable. The electric pickups on those strings made them at times sound like buzz saws. I loved the fusion of orchestral music with rock done here by Jeff Lynne in his composition. This album is among my 10 favorite all time.

Harri, thanks for another terrific reaction! I'd like to clarify that I wasn't suggesting that being a pacifist is a bad thing. I was merely saying that this lonely bank clerk, who feels he's insignificant in the real world, has this grandiose dream that he's a medieval war hero returning home from the Crusades to a rapturous welcome. But, the bank clerk is so insecure, that even such a fantastic dream is not grandiose enough to make him feel good about himself. No, he has to make it even MORE grandiose, by dreaming that he's not JUST a war hero returning home to roaring applause and adulation, but he's a RELUCTANT war hero, at that! LOL That he's a, war-hero-turned-pacifist! Yes, in this bank clerk's mind, being a war hero wasn't impressive enough, he had to up the fantasy to make himself a saintly figure, as well, preaching against war itself and vowing to never take up arms again. As for the album cover, you are correct, it's a screenshot of the 1939 classic American film, The Wizard of Oz, featuring Dorothy's magical ruby slippers. Keep reading to find out what future famous person designed this iconic album cover... The person who ELO manager, Don Arden, put in charge of creating the, "Eldorado", album cover was his daughter, Sharon Arden, who worked for him. When Sharon showed the cover to Jeff Lynne, he was confused by it, having never seen, The Wizard of Oz, which was not a famous film in England like it was in America. Jeff objected, but Sharon explained that the photo of Dorothy's dream-world ruby red slippers was the perfect imagery for a concept album about a man experiencing a series of vivid dreams, so he trusted her word on it, realizing after all, that it would be the American market that would determine the success or failure of this album. I'm glad he did, because I think it is one of the coolest album covers of all-time. Oh yeah, Sharon would later marry another Brummie by the name of Ozzy Osbourne. (A "Brummie" is a person from Birmingham, England, where both Jeff and Ozzy grew up.) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My favorite group! Love them and still put in my ELO CDs all the time, especially on road trips. Have a major school reunion but never crossed my mind about the ego part of it, just want to see high school classmates. Some of them I haven't seen since senior year! But yeah, can understand the hero's welcoming home after a glorified battle. Yes, the Wizard of Oz, and the wicked witch, I'm from Kansas, ha ha.

To me Boy Blue is the turning point for Jeff. It’s like he finally found the sound that would define him and free him to use the exploding and driving symphonic music in most of his songs going forward including the ones he produced for the Beatles, Orbison, Petty, Harrison and even soundtracks like Xanadu. Boy Blue like Lynne is genius!

Yes, it’s the Wicked Witch Of The West trying to grab Dorthy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard Of Oz. In 1974, Sharen Arden (now Sharon Osborne, yes, “that” Sharon Osborne) helped her father’s company manage ELO. She and the label’s designers came up with the concept. Jeff and ELO band members absolutely hated it. Being Brits, they weren’t familiar with the movie and didn’t understand the image’s American cultural significance. Sharon insisted on using it to help break though to US audiences. Well, if you read books and online articles today discussing and showing best ever rock album art, Eldorado is often included. I look at the Eldorado protagonist character and Dorthy having much in common as they are both dreamers.

As usual jeff is weaving a piece of musical magic with referencing a famous painting of a returning from war nobleman dressed in blue wearing a sword,then he has the crowd, friends and family cheering for his return where he thanks them but tell them of the pointless waste and horror of it all and then finishes with his wish that no man should ever be made to do this again. The boy blue isn't a pacifist, he has done his duty but has come to realise the pointlessness of it. So you could say he is dissolutioned with war and the failure of politics being able to stop the carnage.A masterpiece but Jeff Lynne.

I definitely recommend some of the more recent ELO after Jeff had full control of tracking every instrument and producing everything. perhaps "All My Life" or "When I Was a Boy"
@pilesovinyl
@pilesovinyl 2 жыл бұрын
Quite the opposite I feel when Jeff played everything on his pro tools it took away the really fresh feel of live strings. The newer material to me is too synthetic. He had two great cellists and a superb violinist and he chose to move away from them because he wanted total control. Hugh McDowell and Mik Kaminski who I saw with the band in the late 70s were fabulous.

@@pilesovinyl I definately agree as far as the strings go. But im a big sucker for harmony and I love how he multi-tracks his own voice on the newer stuff though. The overall production quality is also higher, but I agree its a bummer that the stings arent as big a part of the music on his recent albums.
