Throwing out a few retro names of drummer- singers Karen Carpenter, played drums AND sang until Richard forced her out front. ( Carpenters) Mikey Dolenz - The Monkees , took lessons to learn to play drums AFTER he got the role. So, he didnt know that it's very difficult. Ignorance is bliss, yah? Don Henley- the Eagles- no further comment needed😮 Of note- P Collins punctuates his vocals like he is drumming them. Once you detect it, you can't un-hear it. But, that's a GOOD thing, yah? Because he owns that rhythm.

He was originally just the drummer way back when the band Genesis first started out. At that time Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. When Peter left the band to pursue a solo career, the band started auditioning for a new lead singer. In the meantime, the plan was for Phil to temporarily take over the lead singing duties. A few years ago, he started touring with his son, who was something like 16 at the time and my dude just beats those drums like they owe him money. He really takes after his dad. It has been sad to see Collins age to the point where he has a hard time standing anymore and it's rough for him to hit the drums, but it's also great to see him perform with his son. I'll be heartbroken the day we lose the man. I've been a fan of his music since I was like 10.

Dude pioneered a whole ass decade defining production technique that is still used to this day and one of the core components of the sound of the 1980's

Phil is one of our greatest drummers. Those who have asked below, do we love growing up in the 89's? Yes, but i have you beat bc I have the 60's and upwards and still going strong. One negative is the greats we've loved and lost from dying before their time. They are countless 😢. Loved your commentary once again. I'm making up for lost time.

One of the best drummer singers we have in my opinion 🎉

He was first a percussionist. His drums are like Santana's guitar...unmistakable!

That isn't strictly speaking true. He was in musical theatre as a child. In 1964 at the age of 13 he played the Artful Dodger in the first West End production of Oliver (he was not however the first person to have the role, the show opened in 1960). Phil also appeared in films as well. But you are right that he rose to fame as a drummer in Genesis before becoming known as a vocalist.

I love watching people who learn for the first time that Phil Collins is a drummer. Little do they know that he's one of the best who's ever sat behind those drums. I was lucky enough to see this concert tour and this was absolutely amazing!! You want to see an amazing drum performance of Phil Collins - look up a Phil Collins-Chester Thompson drum duet on here. It will blow your mind!!

This was one of the most epic performances of this song. He can not only sing but his drum playing is on point and damn if he can’t do both at the same time !! TALENT!!!

That's why he had a headset on. He was the original drummer for Genesis and not the lead singer until Peter Gabriel left, he's also quite the comedian during his concerts. I was lucky enough to get to see him years ago wonderful.

He was actually the 3rd drummer for Genesis. He joined them for their 3rd album Nursery Cryme.

I was puzzled at first about your reaction to the headset, cuz I knew Phil Collins first as Genesis' drummer/lead singer. Then as I understood you didn't know what was coming, I was anticipating both his drumming & your reaction. LOL. I'm still grinning over it. Phil Collins was a great performer. I saw him in 1984 (Genesis, Mama tour) and it was FANTASTIC. Ya know... my dad always said you should learn at least one new thing every day. I enjoyed watching you learn. :)

Yeah, he was a world-class drummer before he was a singer-songwriter. This guy oozes music. Thanks for a great reaction!

🇬🇧 Phil was a drummer before he was a singer! Now in his 70s and unfortunately can no longer play the drums due to a bad fall a number of years ago. Please try "Mama" by Genesis, it really shows off his vocal ability. 🥁🩵🇬🇧

Great reaction. YES, Phil is a drummer, lol. When Phil starts playing the drums on this track, it sends a shiver down my spine. The man is incredible. Phil was originally the drummer in a band called Genesis, which also had Mike Rutherford and Peter Gabriel, who are also very successful artists. I am glad that you are a little more enlightened. God Bless.
