As an engineering undergrad (in the mid 1970’s), at Illinois Tech, I worked on a research project under our department chair who, while at Duke, helped develop cold missile launch technology for submarines and when finished converted it to vacuum rail transportation technology research. I also did some original research into the history of pneumatic tube transportation and found that in New York City a short underground system was constructed at the end of the 19th century. This is a very old idea and the work at Illinois Tech built began the innovation of using vacuum tubes with projectiles propelled by atmospheric pressure at the rear of the projectile. One has to wonder if Elon simply takes other people’s ideas and original work without giving due credit to those who laid the foundation for these technologies.

The auto industry in this country erased most of if not all mass transit attempts that encroached on their profits, and the rail industry has done quite a lot on its own to make trains irrelevant except for freight, so most Americans don’t know these ideas exist let alone were at least tried. But because nobody knows of the history of these ideas, Musk is able to smuggle his face to the forefront of all of them to make them sound original, which he then uses as the vehicle to carry water for his “I’m a genius” narrative. We can go to a lot of different countries, right now, and see some of these things put to effective use. But so many of us here in the US go abroad, comment on how awesome the trains are in other places, then come back here and vote to legislatively kill anything that would make our society better in so many ways.

Let's examine that assertion. "Better" for what? I personally appreciate wisdom and awareness more than simple intelligence - but getting my appreciation is not what makes the world go around. There are people whose wisdom I appreciate more than Musk - but who have not done as much to potentially improve the planet (like revolutionize the electric car market). Musk's special skill seems to be that he collects and organizes and guides large teams of very competent people to do things that other teams have difficulty doing. I wouldn't call that "genius" but I can see where some might use that term more loosely than I. Musk has demonstrated that remarkable ability many times, whether we like his politics or not. Right now, Boeing has put two people on the ISS, which it may not be able to safely return to earth. Space-X may be the only folks who can bring them back. That's a real world phenomenon which can't be swept under the rug by snide remarks from people who have never accomplished anything significant to humankind (including me). So to bring it back around - I would rather have wise friends than genius friends. But geniuses may be more vital to our future (if their abilities can be wisely used).

I never paid attention but one day I was looking at Tesla's valuation and I was like... that doesn't make sense. So I double checked.. and I realised that they were multiples of Toyota, which makes EVERYTHING, consumer vehicles, commercial vehicles, logistics vehicles, factory automation, etc. Their revenue is multiples of tesla, but tesla's stock price was worth multiples of toyotas. It was insane.
