Elon Musk Gives First Look At Tesla's Electric Semi

Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised the company's first electric semi-truck would be mind-blowing, and he delivered.
Musk took the wraps off the big rig on Thursday at Tesla's Design Studio in Hawthorne, California, and the vehicle's design was definitely what got the most attention.
The semi can go 0-60 mph in five seconds without a trailer attached.
The big rig has an impressive range of 500 miles per charge. With 80,000 pounds of cargo, it can make the same run in just 20 seconds. It can charge up to 400 miles in just 30 minutes when using a Megacharger, which is a new high-speed charger.
The interior of the vehicle is minimalistic and designed around the comfort of the driver. The driver position is placed in the center of the vehicle, instead of on the left side. This helps provide greater visibility to the driver, Musk said. The cabin is also spacious enough for the driver to stand.
Tesla will begin production of the vehicle in 2019. The company is currently taking reservations for the semi, but a deposit will set buyers back $5,000.

Prashanth Budihal the range is actually bad for a semi 500 miles is bad that means adding at least 2 stops more to my routes where i only do 3 so 5 stops and the comparison of the acceleration of a semi i can get my rig to 65 in 7 or 8 seconds and ill give tesla that but the loaded comparison is completely off im 100% sure its not that slow cause driving in dallas tx or houston tx or main cities we have to be quick cause of a lot of traffic these comparisons are very bais and unfair

Truck Drivers will be looking for a new job. The Tesla truck is mostly automated and will have backup steering wheel holders/loaders that make $10 an hour. Most truck drivers are inconsiderate to say the least. They tailgate and cut you off. The Tesla truck won't cut you off since it's fast. The Tesla truck will not tailgate since it is semi-autonomous and will back off. I don't feel sorry for the soon to be laid off truckers.

L0stH0riz0n21 Change is not the problem, even i could settle with an EV. The problem is that this truck is impractical for long distance hauls with it's 500 mile range, one seat, no mirrors, unnecessary and dangerously fast 0-60 time, and only people with more money than brains can afford this. Also, the electric motor first came around in 1832, about 50 years before the ICE was invented, so technically, you're the dinosaur here.

So? I doubt the very first autopilot plane was 100% better than manual pilots either. Version 2 then 3 then 4 will be better still. Eventually trucking will be something only robots do. Stop trying to convince yourself otherwise.
@eternitynaut
@eternitynaut 6 жыл бұрын
The black version had mirrors and making a even longer range version is feasible technically, it will take more time to make sense economically. If they made it in 2009, the pack would cost $500000 or more, now they want to sell the whole truck for $200000.

Everyone who's saying 500 miles ain't shit for range are missing one thing; this thing doesn't have a sleeper, it's a day cab. Made for trucking locally and returning home every night. You may end up driving more than 500 miles a day if you're hauling multiple loads per day but with downtime waiting on loads to be loaded or unloaded you'll have ample time to recharge

Just had a very quick look on google and it's saying it will take about 5 hrs to recharge, how's that going to work for operators who run their trucks 24/7? Not sure if you do that in the USA but certain companies in the UK do, one driver gets out and the other gets in with the seat still warm!

With claim of 400 miles or 80% charge in 30 minutes = up to 900 miles of driving, and if you know what the HoS rules are you would know a 30 minute break is required for Canada and USA, in Europe its a 45 minute rest after 6 hours at most. So even if a quick 30 minute charge every 400 miles or less cause you sure can't do a number 2 in the truck while driving you need to stop for that and if the rest area has chargers you can plug it in for as long as it takes you to do a pit stop. I for one do not even do a piss in the cab or side of the road. So you could get 1200 miles of charge a day at the least. and you be lucky you can do 700 miles or a bit more in the 11 hours of driving time allowed.
@PillSharks
@PillSharks 6 жыл бұрын
Joshua79C C so basically what your saying is every single place the truck delivers to will be a charging point! When I was driving HGV s in the UK and Europe most of the drivers breaks were accumulated when I was parked in the yard waiting to be loaded or unloaded. So basically if I've driven for 4 hours and arrived at the euro tunnel I would put the tachograph on a 45min break, then I could continue for 4.5hrs driving into Europe. Also if I'd driven to a delivery point and backed on the loading bay I would put it on rest again so I would be ready for the off when the loaders had finished, i can't see how every single warehouse and industrial estate and dock areas will have charging points! Not to mention all the supermarket hubs who struggle to provide drivers toilets and rest rooms, I can't see them providing charging points can you!?
@coyko80
@coyko80 6 жыл бұрын
Pill Sharks yes team driving is also present in the USA . Most of the big companies are doing it. Team driving goes almost 200000 miles a year. They don’t stop , just for fuel that takes 20 min . Charging 5 hours is not something you want in the truck
@luc6284

They could put solar panels on top so it charges pretty much all the time. Especially in sunny areas like the Middle East or Texas. Of course that would be even more expensive so I doubt if it's worth the money.

protoborg Its been happening throughout the country, when you hear the term "hijacked", I assume you think while the truck is moving similar to what you see in tv and movies, no not at all. And I was told there is a stretch of road in Laredo texas that some drivers cant stop for some odd miles. The driver has to keep moving until the shipper or receiver is ready to accept them. A simple google search will give you all this information. abcnews.go.com/Business/armed-robbery-growing-problem-truckers/story?id=10053720 www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/04/28/stolen.semi/index.html

Internal combustion engines will still be the most commonly used engines for vehicles for the next 50 to 75 years, if not longer. This truck is not 'green'. How are the batteries charged? The electricity to charge said batteries isn't generated out of thin air. In the US 65% of electricity is generated by fossil fuels. 35% of which is coal. Depending on where the batteries are charged, you could say this is a coal-fired truck, which is worse for the environment.

@Cline3911
@Cline3911 6 жыл бұрын
I would seriously doubt it, unless we have a gigantic step forward technology wise in the next 20 years. Even if we had perfect, 100% efficient batteries, that didn't require long charging times, and could store thousands of amp hours worth of electricity available tomorrow, it would still take the world 25-30 years to transition everything over to the new technology. The biggest users of fossil fuels is the aviation industry. The aviation industry uses nearly 35% of the total oil market. Have you looked over any Boeing or Airbus documentation recently, and read on what they plan on using as a fuel for the next 40-60 years? That would be Jet A. I cant speak for Airbus, but a few months ago I read some Boeing documentation stating they plan on using Jet A for the next 35-45 years. Batteries/electricity isn't even being explored at this time by major aviation business. Battery technology is no where mature enough to make it feasible for use on a commercial airliner. Once another fuel is determined for aviation, how long will it take to complete a transition from Jet A to this 'unknown' fuel source? And 'aviation' is a small, niche market. Hell, how long did it take the world to transition from leaded to unleaded gasoline? In the US it started in 1973. As late as 1990, I could find gas stations in my area that still sold leaded gasoline. Leaded gas was finally phased out in 1996. It took 23 years to completely ban leaded gas. 23 years to ban a fuel additive. Not transition from one fuel source to another. How much longer would it take to convert every internal combustion engine in the world to an alternate power source? Decades most likely. That being said, lets talk about how 'environmentally friendly' electric vehicles are, shall we? Are you aware of the environmentally destructive process to mine the nickel, copper, lithium, and other metals and elements that will be necessary to manufacture these batteries? Surely you're not going sit there and tell me strip mining is environmentally friendly. Furthermore, many of the necessary metals, and other elements are *ALREADY* in short supply. How much more of the Earth will have to be explored to find new sources? Do new sources of these metals and other elements even exist to manufacture the batteries en masse? At this point that is unknown. Are you aware that millions of barrels of oil will still need to be collected, just to make the plastic enclosures for said batteries? If all internal combustion engines were gone tomorrow, and fuel was no longer needed, we would still have a dependency on crude oil, of about 8 billion barrels a day, to make other derivatives, such as plastic, wax, fertilizer, asphalt, grease, et al? Once again, whilst extracting crude oil from the earth has become cleaner in recent years, it still not exactly environmentally friendly, and accidents do happen. Are you aware that when the batteries are no longer useful they will need disposal? Where do you suppose we put them? In a landfill? Some poor third world country in Africa? Currently it is not cost efficient to recycle used batteries, that means people throw them away. But the problem still remains. Odds are the solution to this problem will not be environmentally friendly either. Now on to the other reasons electric vehicles aren't viable. Batteries are nowhere near efficient as gasoline, diesel, CNG, or any fossil fuel. They never will be. How many batteries will need to be installed for 1 of these trucks to go 500 miles? If you have to use just 10% of the trailer space for batteries to move the truck, you are cutting the small amount of profit you make transporting goods. Meaning more trucks have to be on the road, to move the same amount of products. This means more traffic congestion, more money for road repairs due to congestion, a higher cost of ownership, and higher overall electrical usage, which is my next point. What kind of power demands will be necessary to charge the batteries? In the US, 65% of electricity is derived from fossil fuels, 30% of which, is still coal. Are you going to tell me burning coal is environmentally friendly? Perhaps you should take a look at air quality in China. The Chinese are still building coal fired power plants, however they have slowed their construction to a rate of 2 per month from 5 per month in recent times. Not only that, but will current electrical infrastructure of the US be able to keep up with the demands of charging said batteries? Of course not. California still has rolling blackouts, due to the fact that there has not been a new power plant constructed in California since 1976, and they can't purchase enough from other places. There are plenty of cons to electric vehicles. Cons such as fuel, road taxes, safety, efficiency, electrical availability and cost, and many others I have left out. Unfortunately the electric vehicle is no where near ready for prime time at this point. Next 50-100 years as technology improves, and battery technology matures? Of course. With all that being said, ask yourself this: Why is Elon Musk taking so much money from the American taxpayers to try to bring this to fruition? Is he afraid to spend his own money? It appears so, and for good reason. He isn't stupid, and has to know deep down, electric vehicles are not financially viable. If they were, most Americans would own one by this point, and it would be getting tougher to get gasoline. However if you look at recent sales, you'll notice sales of vehicles that use the most gasoline (Trucks and SUV's) is on the rise. Ford is actually gutting its sedan line due to this. Meaning the Ford Mustang will be the only 'car' you can purchase from the Ford Motor Company. Many people think electric vehicles are something new. They aren't. The first known electric car was built in 1837 by Robert Davidson, nearly 200 years ago! It was actually built before the internal combustion engine was built. Father Eugenio Barsanti, an Italian engineer, together with Felice Matteucci of Florence invented the first real internal combustion engine in 1853. Inventors and scientists at the time realized they had a major problem with a vehicle that used electricity as its power source. Electricity for the most part, isn't portable. Do you think there might be a reason electric cars have not been adopted en masse? Inventors and scientists knew back then why not, and for the reasons I have listed above. This isn't going to change anytime soon, without a giant leap in technology. I'm talking a giant leap, like going from the Wright Flyer to space travel, in the course of 10 years or less. That's the type of innovation that would be needed in this field. I just hope I get to live to see it.
