100 years ago before cars the average time for people to go at work and to go to buy food was 20 minutes. Today the average is still the same: 20 minutes. Cars just allowed few people to regroup work place and shopping place into massive places. The solution is to understand, not to build tunnel. You can even give an helicopter to everyone all what it will change is that in few decades they'll have to do in average 100 miles to buy food at a good price and 100 miles to get a food. Your boss don't pay anything for your traveling to work, it's slightly more concenient for them if people move. At the end it's a waste if time and energy for 99% of people, it's annoying and it generates pollution. Musk owns a company so he's not rly sensitive about this.

I once "saw" in my dream with me being in an unknown metropolitan city. What I saw were that large group of people "walks" on a small moving platfrm (segway liked) en mass, criss crossing between them and vehicle on the street with minimal slowing down. Then there are vehicles, which also liked that. There's no traffic light (as it wont be needed, or maybe one or two but hardly noticed since there is only a number of them). They key was (as I learned) once they (human n vehicle) approaches the city, a centralized computer takes the control of their vehicles, including the personal transportation platform (the segway), centraly monitoring n controlling each one distance n speed, allowing them to intersect & criss-crossing each other with minimal slow down. Yup the whole city is basically a giant supercomputer, managing city wide traffics n people, carefully adjusting the speed n time of each of them, allowing them to intersect in high speed without colliding. From a top far away, its like city wide synchronized symphony at plays and its mesmerizing to watch! Remember the helicopter with its angled dual blade, intersecting each other between each blades without the blades ever coliding with each other? Its very much liked that except way more complex n complicated on top of enormous city traffics.

My idea is autonomous vehicles on a mesh net in constant communication with each other. Eliminate humans from the equation and traffic will flow consistent. Embed trace lines in the current roadways. Sensors on the vehicle will track to those trace lines. Between the tracers, the mesh net and GPS. This could all be worked out with software. My guess is Google has the largest most comprehensive mapping database. All roads with trace lines installed are fully autonomous. If you pull off onto a road without them. The car reverts to manual mode until a trace is sensed. I'll point out that this would also save something like 100k lives a year in America sure to fatal crashes. But I'm just a nobody so someone else will get credited with this idea in another 60 years 🤷
