@@lt4dave let's not go with that route for a LONG time. There is seriously no reason to remove the wheel besides cost. That that I'm saying that outout, i can totally see a very cheap tesla being completely autonomous in the future in say the next 7 years. Right on par with all of tesla's other questionable cost saving "innovations". As cool as it would be, I would hate not having a steering wheel and would not get a car that had no steering wheel even if it was so good that it NEVER made mistakes and was completely autonomous. I like driving sometimes and I only even use autopilot for tedious driving anyway.

To echo what others are saying…composite overwrap pressure vessels and relatively light, and the mass of the rear seats is being deleted to accommodate it, as well. Additionally, you can harvest braking energy to drive a compressor to “charge up” the pressure vessel with air under pressure. Would regular air be suitable for this application? Beats me. I’m not a rocket scientist. Whatever it’s going to be it’s going to be super cool.

The cold air thruster’s will levitate the car off the ground not by much maybe only 10 to 15cm that way there’s no friction on the tyres so the rear thrusters can easily accelerate the car to 62mph in under a second.

Keep an eye out for that Lotus Type 135, as well as the Caterham Project V. Those won't have rocket thrusters or break any world records, but IMO they could hit closer to the mark of a proper sports car.

Fighter pilots pass out between 3g to 6g acceleration (g = 9.81 meter/sec^2). A pilot able to endure 6g acceleration is a g-monster. A car that spends X seconds to accelerate to 100km/H (27,8 meter/sec), has an acceleration of 27.8/X meter/sec^2. In terms of g, that is equivalent to 27.8/X/9.81 = 2.83/X g. A Tesla model 'X' accelerates in 2.5 sec to 100km/h, equivalent to 1.13g, and that is higher than the gravitational acceleration g. A Tesla Roadster's one second acceleration to 100km/h corresponds to 2.83 g, and this is close to 'passing out' for some professional fighter pilots. I experienced the 1g acceleration in a Tesla model X, I got too dizzy, got semi unconscious. A Tesla roadster is not for the faint of brain, better call Saul: wear a legal G-suit.

For starters, I'd go with a 1.5 with Roadster. Market it as "the production model we ought to have been making all along", updated to what is available now in tech. (drive by wire means there's no real need to make distinct "left" or "right" hand steering built into the design of the seating At All! You can literally map the input to a joystick, a wee-like sensor you hold in one hand and be able to hand it around the car! Even having all the "mirror views", the outside as projected onto the screens, be adapted to the location of the person steering. Next Models S3XYs need fly-by--wire too so All you Mates can get them too! And ever cooler features too!) Then market Roadster 2.0 as this ultra new thing being knocked about now and that is on a future horizon! Open up discussion around those issues such as legalities, insuranceable? Tesla would have to do it themselves! Blah-blah. Lots of fodder for engagement. For sure make Roadster 1.5 with max castings and other production innovations. Make the Founders edition as expensive as the market will hold! $500,000+. Once those sales start slowing down, shift over to a more "mass market" version, lower the price into the expensive but reasonable range. In the $125,000 range, with an assisted FSD? It might outsell the Model 3!

It would just suck a lot of power compressing all that air, think about it. You can't create more energy than is put in, so much of that energy that would be used to accelerate the car that quickly if it was electrically driven, would need to be compressed and then expelled. That would take a LOT of energy so definitely expect a massive battery and your range to just about half when using the cold gas thrusters. That's still really good though because around 300 miles of range some using the gas thrusters is still really good, assuming it gets 620 miles. If it gets closer to 400, well, 200 miles is still good for a short use track type thing, but still you want more bandwidth when you're on the track than just 200 miles.

In fact, carbon tanks can be very heavy . . . it totally depends on the gas pressure requirement. For fuel cell vehicles like Toyota Mirai, tank pressure for compressed H2 is 700 bar, requiring a carbon-wrapped HDPE tank that weighs 155kg to hold 5kg of hydrogen. For a Type III carbon-wrapped aluminum tank rated for 350 bar, the empty tank weighs 92kg to hold a 5kg H2 payload. These are not light tanks.

it will be loud AF and take a lot of time. to be practically usable (more than a couple seconds of thrust per hour) they need to completely disrupt a number of state of the art technologies: -air compressor loudness, weight, efficiency, weight -air tank weight and reliability -thermal insulation -cold ai thrusters air velocity

@@tv-ld3wv no it's not gonna work for the track. for a 1s 0-60 it will have to dump 50kg of air. compressing 50kg of air to 10000 psi takes a very long time, a lot of energy and it's very inefficient, generates insanely hot temperatures, requires lots of. cooling, thus lots of heat losses. if it didn't have losses and was efficient, your 10000psi air temperature would be 100x higher than the melting temperature of carbon fiber....

I think Mate Rimac knows what he is talking about. They say their Nevera is mostly limited by tires for the top speed. As for under 1sec 0-60, its just physics. Will it be worth it ? Think about flash lights in cities they flash you when over 30mph (or 50km/h). And you will hit that under a sec! I am driving my Tesla in chill mode just because that. I can only imagine how it will be for that car

The regular Roadster will probably be faster on Nurburg since you won't be hauling around the whole thruster system and they will probably be single use throughout the drive, or maybe every minute or more It'll recharge. So in a straight like It'll be unreal fast but for driving I honestly believe regular version will be better or maybe the same if they up the horsepower for the spacex version to compensate the weight.

It depends. If the thrusters add that much downforce, you'll be going around corners at insanely impressive speeds, plus the additional power boost for the straights. However that acceleration would need to be saved so you have enough to use in the corners because if you run out you'll slide into the barrier. It'll definitely be a lot faster around the ring though for sure, since it'll likely make up any lost time in the straights in the corners.

Features you'd like to see? How about 4-wheel independent drive, braking, suspension, and steering. This would allow speed-adjusted toe-in, lateral movement without vehicle rotation, proper wheel angle for tight turns on each tire, tight-clearance turns for any situation, novel techniques to handle skidding, maximal thrust or braking from each tire separately, etc.

The compressed air is a given, as it has been promised. I also expect a 4 motor design, as that's the natural way to one-up the Model S Plaid. What I'm really curious about, is whether they'll use a more exotic batery chemistry to reduce weight. Mindlessly using 200kWh's worth of standard NMC batteries would just make this thing way too heavy. I'd much rather see something like 60 kWh's of Amprius Silicon Nanowire batteries with 500 Wh/kg and a total weigth around 1.5 tons.

Understood. The space-x rockets already have massive pump- compressors which are not light weight. In the car, you would need to generate the compressed air in some fashion quickly. Simplest way to get some compressed air and also cool some hot spots at the same time with virtually no moving parts is with a simple water to steam phase change. @@larryc1616

Tanks are light, and the thrusters really aren't that heavy either. It's more about the compressor being used to that might be a bit heavy, but the thrusters themselves wouldn't be that much heavier than some metal pipes used in exhaust. However if they move, you're definitely adding a bit of weight there. It'll be heavy for sure, but might be lighter than you expect.

The speed and acceleration of a falling object is slower than a high-performance car theoretical acceleration limit with high performance tires because high performance tires can do more than a 1.0 coefficient of friction. The McMurtry Spéirling vacuum technology if applied to the Tesla roadster could enable it to accelerate much faster with huge amounts of downforce. But human physiological limits will be a problem. Rimac is wrong, the fans don't have to add much weight. Tesla would really be smart if they admitted that they should license the technology from McMurtry. The smartest way to do it is apply the vacuum downforce directly to the wheel a arms, so that the suspension is not compressed. This would have a similar effect to the revolutionary Lotus 79 double chassis formula 1 car that was banned for being too successful.

2.7g minimum acceleration will be required to do 0 to 60 mph in less than 1 second. That will require the cold gas thrusters, which I am a bit skeptical will actually function for more than just a few seconds which is kind of lame, and definitely will not be as good as using the McMurtry vacuum technology which will also improve cornering and braking performance by the same amount it improves acceleration, and function for as long as you have battery energy.

The SpaceX version is an interesting experiment but should be a limited production run so owners have something really special. The most fun to drive would be a single rear motor version. I also think the back seat should be optional and if you delete it you should have luggage space back there and maybe custom luggage as an option.

The SpaceX part could be a priceless safety feature. Imagine staying on the road when aquaplaning or propelling out of a frozen parking after unexpected snowfall. Breaking on a frozen highway instead of hitting a traffic jam. If that is illegal then assisted breaking would be illegal too.

Apparently Elon Musk has said early 2025. However, this is just a drumbeat to attempt to address the continuous bad news since the new year. Most serious magazines are quoting 2026. However there are serious issues, the first true BMW quad motor M cars are being tested in the Artic Circle, the new Porsche Taycan has arrived with the 911 Mercedes SL and G wagon in design and testing and that’s only the big three. So apart from diehard Tesla followers who else will buy an expected starting price $200,000 Tesla.

From a practical standpoint this is vaporware. We already have "cars" that can achieve that speed. Top fuel dragsters can reach 100mph in less than one second, but are obviously highly specialized, hideously expensive, and operate on a track under ideal conditions. That said, concepts/prototypes are often what lead to advances in technology.

The thrusters are not jet thrusters. They are fans that remove air pressure from under the car. In order to achieve 0- 60 in under 1 second you need to reduce the air pressure under the car. A group of students just proved that this works. Thay developed and did 0- 60 in under 1 second with a gocart .

The car would need to have skirts that nearly touch the ground. That is not practical for a roadworthy car.

I think the only way to get better than 1.5g of acceleration (sub 2 seconds 0-60) is to have a very strong downforce on the wheels. Add to the amount of tire surface area in contact with the road and take advantage of the torque. Cold air thrusters could easily provide this downforce. It seems they would need to draw a vacuum under the car to get it to sub-second times without thrusters. This will be interesting to watch.
