@PetePineda I agree that rural schools need a solution, but I don't think vouchers will provide that. Private schools are not held to the same or higher standards as public schools and they are not required to take on special needs kids. In addition to that, school vouchers per SB2 provide $10000 per student for private school, $6000 per student for public school, and $2000 per student for Home school. I would be more open to vouchers if private schools had to operate on a level playing field to have access to Texas tax dollars.

Sorry, but vouchers are a bad idea. We in SC are at the bottom, and what our state did with the fed education money is use it as a way to lower state taxes that they should have been funding schools. Now, the state lottery they are trying to fund vouchers off that program, so surprise the most regressive tax program possible.

Responing to Scotts points about public school' food and health. It has been here, in Berkeley, CA, by Alice Waters (Chez Panisse). She designed the school menu, was part of the project promotion, got kids involved in health focused activities, and even planted a garden to supply some ingredients for the program. It was a big deal at the time, had broad public support, and showed what is possible vs. existing norms.

As a person saying 'i told you so' for the last 10 years, the 'let them' argument is tempting. However it is not a good outcome to hope for for two reasons. #1, the deep South has been conservative for hundreds of years, and still is at the bottom of every ranking, and has never appreciably changed tack. They will suffer, but they will not wake up someday to the fact that conservativism, the GOP, and Trump's approaches are objectively making their lives harder. They will not connect the dots that the government things they hate are things they receive. DOGE can fix some of it, but others things might not be politically palatable like Congress allowing non-merit based hiring preferences, such as preference for disabled vets when they are extremely underqualified compared to non vets.

I have only just started following you, but I so appreciate your directness, your rational thought . I may not have your experience, but I am practical and what you talk about and the way you talk about it is so practical. I hear you say so many things that are in my thoughts. Hearing a conversation between you and Jessica is so refreshing. I have wanted to know more about her, but could not bear to watch Fox in order to hear it. I totally agree with you; the red states need to see what life is like after Trump has broken the system. I agree with "let them." And I agree with you, 100 percent. I came from a single mother, I was really bright, I had to go to public school, I had no other options. This issue of vouchers is absolutely passing money from those without to those who have money. And there is no question , at least when I was in school, that the kids who were in private schools had far better opportunities. This issue with reading, I believe , and I work with reading issues, is directly related to methodology and the testing requirements, . The schools abandoned grammar. They abandoned teaching about grammar and reading is throughly dependent upon one's ability to extract information from complex grammar. What they need to do is roll the tape back to a. teaching phonics. Stepping up the process to third grade and reading to learn. b. Identify the kids who are dyslexic from those who are not. c. Given them the dyslexia intervention and stop throwing it into a bucket called "reading impaired". c. Teach grammar, and assist the students in extracting knowledge from the grammar. d. Increase the length and complexity of what they are reading, and teach to mastery. This is not what is happening. THey throw them a book, then a report, and then they move onto something else and there is no way that students will learn to read without mastery. The issue is ? They are not teaching to mastery. and then everyone wonders why they are behind.

My parents paid for all several of their children to attend catholic school. The fear I keep hearing, is that vouchers are going to force private schools (like religious grade schools and high schools) to become dependent of government assistance.
