Here's the thing, you do not simply replace that 1000mw nuclear plant with a 1000mw solar field. Looking at capacity factor alone, nuclear has a capacity factor in the low to mid ninetieth percentile while solar is in the low twentieth percentile. In this case, (1000 x 90%) / 20% = 4500. In other words, to replace that 1000mw nuclear you would have to build a 4500mw solar, and that is IF utility scale storage was technically feasible. Oh, and what about if you get a week long snowstorm that blankets your solar field? Then, you start factoring in other issues such as inverter loss, battery loss, solar panel degradation, battery degradation, etc, etc, etc. and you see that totally replacing coal/gas/nuclear base load generation is a pie in the sky fallacy.

Complain about the lack of employable applicants 2. Promote automation (using the pandemic as a veiled excuse) 3. Placed mandates on industries that have destabilized economies and energy sustainability across the globe. With the advances in weather predictability, it is inexcusable to have increased property damage, injuries, and death, yet now we do. Each day it appears as though elected 'leaders' and trusted government agencies, hate those that elevated them to their posts. As to renewables required 'battery bank', is anyone considering the impact of Grand Solar Minimum, volcanic eruptions, and potential damage from magnetic solar flares on our ability to generate renewable energy? Due to impacts on sun and temperature, depending in the severeity of solar phase, we may face conditions similar that lead to the extinction of dinosaurs...and THIS is when they want to make surviving more difficult? Renewables can be a brilliant compliment to fossil and nuclear power, but they can not replace them without the mass population death and starvation predicted by the likes of Bill Gates (who leads research for artificial meat).

Solar and wind is very expensive because you can't store it economically now and it has to be used immediately. Coal, Natural Gas and Nuclear are needed at the present time until you can actually store the excess and release it at night or when the wind isn't producing any power. Also Solar and Wind are toxic or the materials used to produce the panels or magnets and generators in the wind sources are toxic. At the present time solar and wind have a life time use of about 30 years at which point you have to install new ones and there is no one that is even attempting to recycle at a large scale. Solar panels are gone through and if they are still producing at around 80% then they are resold.
@margaretarmstrong24452 жыл бұрын
Thomas wind turbines and solar panels are already being decommissioned in the Northern Hemisphere. They do not last 30 years. The average lifespan of commercial solar plants is 21years in America and wind turbines don't last that long. The output of both is is less than 30% and once they are deemed to be commercially unviable they are earmarked for decommissioning. Almost all of them are sent to landfill, few are repurposed. Most are not recycled and those that are, are not fully recycled and the remaining materials are incinerated or sent to landfill. Sadly some panels are sent to third world countries under the premise that they are useful. These countries don't have the facilities to deal with this mostly damaged technology and they are left to deal with what is essentially toxic waste.

Time moves on and costs go down, production volumes go up and the energy density of the cells go up also. So in ten years if nothing changes at Giga Nevada then a better chemistry for the 2170 cell would mean way more than 35GWh would be produced, more like 70GWh. Phoenixbyrd, Musk doesn't care about whether or not renewables are up to scratch, he makes his money from EV's and batteries and he's promoting nuclear because he knows that his technology won't survive without serious backup.

I agree with most of what Alex said and I've been pro nuclear (particularly pro Thoreum Molten Salt Reactor research) for years. My issue is his issue with Elon and the battery production. Tesla is actually way behind on battery production but they are building at a rapid pace. I don't see the issue with solar power if it's done right, if each home which wanted solar bought a power wall or some kind of storage then it builds an incredible amount of redundancy to have hundreds of megawatt hours of backup in the grid. In fact some homeowners opt to just but the battery and essentially trade energy in real time to pay off the battery and start generating profit due to the demand curve lag from solar production occurring during lowest demand hours.

I live near Rochester, NY. One November not long ago we had 12 hours of sunlight for the entire month of November. And don't forget the transformation to electric vehicles will greatly increase the electric energy usage. So basically you have to add all the Btu's consumed for natural gas, coal, oil and nuclear to be replaced by 'green energy' and be generated by 'green' means. You can't just look at the current electric energy generation as the goal is to stop all fossil fuel usage. I don't think this is achievable within the near future.
@margaretarmstrong24452 жыл бұрын
Firstly, there's a very real fire risk with batteries. And in regards to rooftop solar panels, are you aware that the plan is to shut down your solar feed when it suits them giving preference to the commercial solar plants, and to utilise your energy when there is a shortfall due to cloudy days.

@@margaretarmstrong2445 I don't think solar energy will ever power a grid... you would need a reliable base load generation, like nuclear power, use solar or wind as intermittent and natural gas as a load following backup to fill in for the shortfalls

Taking things WAAAY out of context. Cherry picking what he said to help spin a narrative. He said 300TWH of installed capacity. This is only to buffer intermittentency of wind and solar. He's not saying this is the total amount of energy we need. This does not include nuclear and generation of geothermal, tidal, hydro, wind and solar that is used immediately.

I invested in solar, and my costs decreased. When I get my ev, I will have battery backup for my home, and if given an incentive can help the grid during peak hours. My costs will further decrease. I don't give a @#$% for fossil fuels. Been ripped off by corporations for many years. Fossil fuels are going to get steam rolled going forward. Be very careful. It will take a while to transition and we will need some in the meantime. But do not over invest. If I was Australian, considering how they have been abused by private electrical suppliers, I would get as independent as possible. Your renewable resources are excellent.

Please look into the motorized versions of self running generators and many other technologies, to confirm and use my ideas. If there is a self running generator running 24/7 without overheating, exploding or anything else, there would always be energy being put into the power walls to use. Imagine billions of clean energy sources all running themselves the items around and the power grid.😎⚡
